Saturday Open Thread - 11/8/25: Odds and Ends
Good morning, good people! I hope you are all doing well!
My young attorney pal shared her interesting new family law case this afternoon. Seems a 19 yr old blond, blue eye woman met a guy of Hispanic origin in their freshman year at college, resulting in a baby. The mom's family brought their 19 yr old and 1 week old baby to my friend's office to hire her to proceed with an action to prove the alleged daddy via DNA testing, and establish official parentage and set up the long, 18 year struggle of co-parenting. My friend said the baby did have dark skin and straight black hair, mom is snow white, blonde, blue eyed.
Lawsuit was filed, dad was served, DNA testing to be done via court order. So far, normal. Then...
A woman called my friend. Said she was an aunt of the alleged dad, and wanted to tell my friend the lawsuit would go nowhere. See, according to the aunt, the white woman was messing around with lots of guys. Including Republicans. You know, the ones with straight hair and dark skin, unlike her family. which is cur;y haired and light skinned.
My friend did agree to the skin and hair description, but was puzzled about the Republican thingy...
She came up with the question I would not have thought of to ask: "Ma'am, do you mean Dominican Republic men?

My pal and I mused about a lib dem/Republican child. I suggested to change his white Anglo name via court order to name him Marco. She suggested he might then have a chance in baseball. I suggested he would at least get a college scholarship to play baseball if he was named Marco, and then could proceed to the minor leagues, and go into politics.
We will be in contact and share ideas as her case proceeds.
This is an open thread, open to any and all my friends here wish to share with the community.
I am seeing financial stress all day, every day, as everyone in my neck of the woods are seeing their income being stretched to cover food, utilities, fuel, medicine, and other basic necessities of life.
Someone heeds to have mercy on us 99%ers. Now!
Disclaimer: I think Marvin Gaye is underrated due to the way he died. That overshadowed his incredible voice, his sincerity, his musical legacy by a press that had headlines at his artistic expense.

The brag bout AI saving time is bs. We are required to check and double check the AI work product, so why not just do the f'g work yourself? Lawyers are where the buck stops in malpractice. I take the hit for bad secretaries, paralegals, and now, machines? I can exert control over staff, but a computer service?
If a potential client has purchased an AI service and brings their research documents to me, they are shown the door. I refuse to argue with them over the stupidity of Hal.

Good morning...
It is a lovely fall day here. Colors are at or near peak. Woods are yellow and red.
However, the deep freeze is on its way on Monday and Tuesday with lows in the 20's and about 40 for a high. Then were back into the 60's and warming. The roller coaster of fall in the south.
We could use a rain, but unlike much of Alabama we are no longer in drought.
I see after a week of being out of touch, the US is picking another conflict with Nigeria...as if Russia, Iran, Venezuela, etc. are not enough. What happened to the "Peace President"? Guess he took Orwell serious, "War is Peace!"
The gov't shut down isn't helping. Food stamps are stopped this month and onward. Don't worry about congress, they still get their payday somehow. Gov't workers just have to tough it out.

Our cold snap arrives Sunday, lasts through Monday, heads back up into highs in the 80s for the rest of the week.
Nigeria is killing Xtians, and everyone else. The horror! (Syria and Israel are too, but we don't seem to care...) And why are we bombing Sudan?
We will be a driving down a couple of highways this afternoon that we do not typically travel, so we may see more colorful foliage than usual.
Well, the MIC is the driver while we are in the cattle trailer, headed to the stock yards. We are out of control and that can be interpreted a couple of ways.
My attorney pal thinks the DNA tests will show the Republican is not the Dad. Her client might have been a busier girl than previously believed.

Came across this Sean Foo presentation of the tariff conundrum in light of a potential decision by Scotus adverse to Trump's executive imposition of tariffs on just about all countries.
Really like Marvin Gaye, and his rendition of the National Anthem. I like Lena Park's version, the Luna gayageum version, and Sohyang's as well. Lena and Luna are US citizens.

I know there must be many great performance of the American anthem over the years representative of all of constituent groups. I came across these artists' performances over the years of listening to Korean videos and thought they were reflective of the strong ties among South Korea, the Korean American community here, and the US, no matter what the ups and downs of the relationship may be.

I am pressed for time, as our shopping trip is to a store 30 miles away, then to a second store 30 miles from there. I will listen to the presented anthem versions once the groceries are put away this afternoon.
I am very interested on how the conservative Supreme Court will rule on the tariff question. According to Judge Nap, our trade deficit has existed for 34 years, so there is no emergency that gives the President emergency authority to impose tariffs.
Until the ruling, we will pay anywhere from 1% to 8% on every purchase we make, including utilities and insurance. Women's clothing has decreased 2%. I will not be allowed to go near a women's clothing store! Lol!

They nonetheless all think a full-scale invasion of Venezuela would be a disaster, and so they are successfully able to butt-cover in that way. But, in general, nobody wants to suggest that the PSUV might actually be popular in Venezuela. "Oooh, let's look for a measure of poverty so we can say bad things about a country threatened by embargo and by a comprador elite! Yeah, that's the ticket!"

...in terms of air warfare, how similar this situation is to the US direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.
I wonder about Venezuelan readiness on a technical basis to effectively man those weapons in a coordinated way at an early stage in a conflict with US airborne weapons. Those three clearly are defensive in nature. I suspect that the naval forces present are there to create the tactical air defense net on both sides to conduct air warfare.
China and Russia had land based logistics available to support Vietnamese air defenses. Not so in Venezuela as far as I know. Therefore, naval and airborne support from Russia, or China would be a tempting and dangerous target for the US. I noticed that the early options presented by planners to Johnson in terms of warfare against North Vietnam look remarkably similar to options I had seen discussed in some report to the US chain of command recently.
The prospects for either side don't appear promising, as a long war could be in the offing if the wrong decision were made by the US. US aircraft losses were staggering in Vietnam. I think the white house would be tempted to go sooner rather than later. The more time Venezuela has to prepare, the worse it's going to be. Allowing them time to become familiar with such weapons will be very adverse. Wise counsel would be to avoid such a reckless conflict all together.

As we drove closer and the sun began to come from another direction, it actually said LOCKSMITH.

prep for upcoming trip to Pismo for a few days. As a result, I'm way behind on my news reading and all that. I did spot a hilarious headline in RT -

No real local news, the atmospheric river has passed so no need to water before departing mañana, nothing blown down, etc. Global news seems to be mostly full of sound and fury and signifying nothing. so not a lot to talk about there either.
