Open Thread - 10/18/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! I hope you are all enjoying your Saturday!
How 'bout some good news? Dystopian's blood pressure is going down and is nearing the drs.' level for eye surgery. Soon, he will be birding, taking photos, and reading a screen!
So, this meme said don't die dreaming. Die with memories. I can't travel until Dear One is done with his treatments. My memories are stirred like this: over the last couple of weeks, I wore t-shirts from Dubai, London, Romania, and Luckenbach. I wore shoes from Czech Republic, blouses from Guatemala, Lisbon (Lisboa), and Bangkok, jewelry from Panama and Kenya, so I do remember, and those memories are dreams come true. Don't dream of climbing a Mayan temple, just figure out a way to do it.
Ok, friends, let's share news and videos and music and memes and jokes and...so on and so forth, because this is an Open Thread, open to anything you folks wish to share.
Let 'er rip!

Hey, friends!
I had called a Judge's office and told his staff I wanted to gossip for 5 minutes and have him call me when he had time. Last night, he called, and we talked about stuff we had seen and done for the last 40 years. Recently, he got strep throat, and took a week off work. He spent all day and most of the night in a recliner watching tv. After a week, he realized if he did retire, he would be dead within a year, so he decided to run for one last 4 year term.
So many of our attorney pals died when they walked away. We made a pact we would go for at least 4 more years and promised if we noticed each other getting brain fuzz and doing harm to folks, we would make the necessary calls.
FWIW, get busy and make memories while you have the ability to remember!
Your turn, people!

Good morning, Cap'n!
I will toss in the problem plaguing me. Inflation. How do I plan on pulling out a set amount from my savings to maintain my lifestyle when I can't know or even predict how food, fuel, and basic utilities will rise in cost? What worked perfectly as a budget that included world travel in 2019 is now a budget that might cover an extended weekend to somewhere in Texas that includes a concert.
I only take cases and document production work that I want to take. At least I do not have to take high octane, complicated cases. Drawing up 4 wills and 4 deeds, which can be done in 4 hours, covers my office overhead for a month. But with rising property taxes, rising insurance costs, and rising income taxes, I will need to do more work, more cases.
It is impossible for me or anyone to know if their retirement accounts will stretch our to their end of life. What I do know is that if I have to work to be able to eat my favorite foods, to crank up the A/c to be cool and comfortable, that's what I will do. I am not ready to spend my days in a recliner.
Hey, friend, this getting old ain't for pussies!
Enjoy your weekend!
edit: HUGE ERROR! apple cider, NOT white wine! Good grief! Anyway, every single person who has eaten it has asked me for the recipe.

Worries about about the future

are basically pointless IMO. It is only the present we
have a modicum of influence over. It is one thing to have
trepidations over decisions. Quite another to wait for the
consequences of mistakes to color future outcomes. Or
realizations that said determinations were actually quite
insightful. Quien sabe?

I paid for the burials of both my parents,
a their funds had run out. 'I do not have children. I have me, and a husband with cancer. My family lives long. His family tends to die younger. He will never do without, nor will I, if I just pay attention. I've got the basic end of life down pat for us, but it is the enjoyment of what is left of it that drives me.
I am a person who is driven by the quality of life, not just being alive.
I am prepared for merely being alive though. That is what I resist in my retirement planning.

You are a positive force
....and a natural influencer. Those are the considerable gifts you arrived with. However, you also possess unique resources at C99 that can help you solve (or mitigate) some of the economic and physical dilemmas that you have presented here: (See below.)
There exists here a creative force and deep pool of wisdom that is constantly cultivated by a small group of intellectually honest people who have come here for many years to bear witness to the violent global events and the human suffering that is funded the culture in which they live. The US Federal Government offers its residents and citizens physical protection from potential retaliation by the enemies that the US is attacking and assaulting, world-wide. Unfortunately, the US offers its citizens no protections that results from its economic warfare.
No matter how deplorable and damning and destructive the political chaos is that is unleashed by the US against weaker foreign nations — C99ers come here for an uncensored view of the evidence-based foreign destruction, without the slanted Neocon think-tank-narratives that are forced upon the US population by US media monopolies. Thus, USians are widely regarded by the rest of the world as the most uninformed and misinformed population on the planet.
There is relatively little 'Magical Thinking' that takes place at C99, and the ideological brain damage that is constantly on display across the US, is largely absent here, along with the constant Party blaming. Intellectually honest people rarely mention US political parties at all — and see them as a covert Duopoly and the political tools of corrupt Special Interests. Many, if not most C99 readers are well aware that there exists no political solution that can unseat the established Family Lines of the wealthy capitalists, who continue to own and control the American Plantation of Divided and Failing States. Here, there are efforts to gauge how harmful the inevitable blowback from US aggression will be to their lives. Most comments here rely on established and unrevised historical truths, forensic politics, and unwavering logic as filters that lead to understanding and predictable outcomes.
So, why not turn your concerns into working posts. Your concerns strike me as universal issues that everyone is facing to varying degrees. some degree.Just break them into smaller actionable components — and ask C99 to help you brainstorm creative solutions for specific issues. (I'm happy to show you how to post polls n your comments to measure the group's differences. (Community views do evolve when exposed to non-fiction news.) If nothing else, proactive discussions can be a net asset for a non-delusional community, and may provide some comedy, or satire, or endearing confessions. I would expect to see some helpful group-sourced strategies to game affordability..
At the moment, the US has a desperate wager on the books, betting that their A.I. geniuses will prevent the exposure of their political corruption and incompetence, and hide their insane greed. US-trained A.I. might do that if they can locate sufficient Rare Earths to manufacture new A.I. chips. (However, A.I. works both ways, and it could mercelessly expose them.)

Good morning...
Good news about dysto! Thanks for sharing.
Love your idea of making memories and living your dream. Sounds like a plan.
They're calling for a much needed rain tonight. We could use it. October is typically our driest month.
Trade day was small this AM, but enjoyed visiting around. Bought some avocados...and that was it.
Gas was $2.60 this morning. I topped off, before hitting the grocery store.
Still have sweet potatoes to dig. Not as good a yield as usual, but we'll have plenty.
Well, onward through the fog. Take care, and thanks for the OT!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Hey, LO!
Sorry Farmer's Market was a shopping dud, but at least you mingled with friends. I used to love avocados and ate them all the time. However, I failed to clean that one avocado thoroughly, and I got a dose of salmonella. Since then, I will get some stomach issue if I eat a slice, or a spoon of guacamole. Such a delicious and healthy food, and I just can't get my digestive system to accept them. DAMMIT ALL TO HELL!
My favorite sweet potato dish: spice and saute' some thin pork chops. Dump them into the crock pot. Cover with onion, top with slices of sweet potatoes. Sprinkle with coriander. Add white wine and a couple of bay leaves, go about your day for 4 hours or so. There will be no leftovers. Easy clean up.
I never thought I would hear my President say if the bad guys didn't stop killing people, a/k/a their enemies, he would "kill them all", which includes children, the elderly, pregnant women. All means all. Where is the outrage?
I am gonna do some fence clearing, unless it rains. I am hoping it does because we haven't had a drop in about 3 weeks. The fence can wait.
Enjoy your day, dear friend!

Then follow it up with C99's Official Home Remedies. (That one I'd like to buy)

I've been thinking about gloom and doom
as a way of life. Our fellow victims of the Empire are too stupid and propagandized to allow for anything so naive as hope. Meanwhile our ruling class is collectively so stupid as to believe they are winning the conflicts they start.
Grow your own food and move to another country are pretty much all there is in the way of a solution to the crisis of collapsing civilization.
That may be the truth, but it is no way to live.
I am going to die trying to change all this empire shit.
I cried when I wrote this song. Sue me if I play too long.
Irony, thy name is The Internet.
This is not to disagree with the specific assessment of Trump in EL's post below. Just to note the irony.
I cried when I wrote this song. Sue me if I play too long.
Good morning, fwf!
Funny about hope. I believe we have been so propagandized to do nothing, make no attempt to change things, and that the fall back position is simply hope for the best, since we are powerless! Are we stupid to hope or not to hope? Therein lies an interesting question. I did read some headline that said Americans are going the ex-pat route in significant numbers because being an American was too embarrassing to endure any longer. From all my travels, I found the dream ex-pat country to be Austria, but I would not wish to be there if WWIII kicks off. I also think they have cut many social services. No way I could afford it in any event.
Oh, well, I will skim some news sites, and sincerely hope I run across some good news, friend. You, too, ok?
Enjoy your day!

Wiki's AI take on Pandora's Box
Hope is a word that denotes a longing for better things.
Can't Never Could Do Anything
My parents would say that to me whenever I said "I can't".
By the time I reached the third grade, I wised up about the fault of diction by using "can't" as a noun. By the time I was leading strikes, the wisdom of the slogan became clear to me. The one way to make sure you are not going to do something is not to try.
I can't honestly claim that the labor disputes I led were in the same league as stopping an empire.
But I see no reason to abandon the concept.
I cried when I wrote this song. Sue me if I play too long.
Unions were once
just all that, fwf.
Well, never say never has worked for me time and time again.
Your parents were admirable people, friend.

A note found in a bottle and signed Anon.
Like his guiding spirit, he craves monumental architecture, but lacks his own Albert Speer.
Like Louis XIV he wants a grandiose palace and, like Louis, he rules by fiat and has a foreign policy comprised of "a mix of commerce, revenge, and pique".When his reign is over, like Louis, he will leave behind an insurmountable mountain of debt. Unlike Louis, however, he built no great canal, is not a patron of the arts, and, far from founding an Academy of Science he is a great foe and destroyer of science.
He wants a grand arch like Napoleon's Arc de Triomphe, but their only similarity is his own far less monumental retreat from Moscow and it is unlikely that he can play Bonaparte's Retreat on the fiddle or even a kazoo.
So, is this finally Yeats' "Second Coming";
or are we seeing just another re-run of Shelley's Ozymandias;
be well and have a good one

Ya know, this world is overrun with leaders who have inflated ideas about their power and might. They all wind up killed, imprisoned, shamed, leaving behind death and destruction on a massive scale.
Btw, are you waiting on pins and needles for the ugliest Presidential Library in the country to open up in Chicago?
Ah, the poets of yore gave us tips about what to expect, but we ignored them.
Well, for the most part, we have ignored or forgotten Bob Dylan. We just don't heed warning signs as we should. Let's see how the ridiculous No Kings (no actual purpose) protests proceed today. And don't expect that a change is gonna come, my friend!

"Been there done that"
This is what a retired colonel friend would say to me all the time when I showed myself to be more familiar with some events or happenings in some remote corner of the globe than he. This he thought conclusively settled any issue. This was a popular saying among the military pilots as well. Yet, I felt I didn't have to "be there" in the physical sense. In thirty years he probably had been almost everywhere. He was a career "intel" type, so we played this little game for a couple of years.
I had this same experience once earlier in South Korea with a high ranking military official who was lecturing a group of officers that it was mandatory to get the USO tour to Panmunjeom to "understand Korea." I call this the "gedunk" tour. I was the only one who hadn't. I noticed virtually all the big political mucketty mucks made the gedunk tour to the JSA to establish their creds or something. That doesn't suggest they knew anything about Korea.
By the time I left I think I had traveled more in South Korea than all but a relative handful of young Americans and I knew a couple of them. Even at that point, because of my contact with Korean Americans, my Korean colleagues in our office, and those who had worked there before me, I knew I had barely scratched the surface, because of the language and cultural barriers, and that I was still ignorant. I'm still astounded by what I don't or didn't know about while I was there, or about what is happening now.
This is a good article for CNN except it leaves out that former president Moon Jae-in met with Kim in the Joint Security Area twice before Trump did, trying to create a framework for normalization of relations with North Korea. It was a media sensation when he did it before Trump, and it appears that Trump merely exploited the opportunity (the photo op) for his own aggrandizement. He had already pushed Kim right into Russia's arms by humiliating him.
In any case, I love that song I've been everywhere man. At some point, my late best friend, used to tease me, by singing that refrain to me, when I talked about some place I had been when he was testing me to see if I knew where someplace was. My friend said he edited a well known biographical book about the Vietnam War. I met the author briefly at his home, so I guess it was true.
I could not compete with your extensive travels OTC, this was mostly domestic travel during my third or fourth "career" which was as an OTR driver. That was my final effort. I'm glad I retired. I couldn't meet anyone else's agenda, itinerary, or demands if I tried. Nothing gets me more upset than air or sea travel.
I think Alan Watts borrowed the George Elliot principle about becoming the person you were meant to be. Good on those who achieve this during their lives. I think Watts felt not having a job facilitated this. Maybe the point is, if you have become yourself while working, great.

Good morning, soryang!
Of course, we do not actually understand Korea. Or China. Or Russia. Or Africa. Or The Middle East. We barely have a grasp of our allies in Western Europe. It literally takes one to make the effort to go there, look around, talk to locals, listen to the music, the chants, the calls, the dances, schools, churches, monuments, to see first hand what is important to those people. And today's No kings protests demonstrates we barely have a grasp of who we are!
Well, Koreans can out sing us any day, any time, so it seems! Hell, we don't even try. We rap a lot of trash talk. That's our "gift" to the world. GAG.
Enjoy your day, and imho, you held your own against your ignorant and arrogant superiors, my friend!

To begin to understand a people, first
it's incumbent to speak the language. That's why our foreign service requires a level of proficiency before assigning anyone to an embassy. Quite a few young westerners speak Mandarin well enough to get by. I study the language of every country I go to even if only for a day or two. As an expat language study is simply part of a daily routine.
Good afternoon, ban nock!
The expat communities I have visited in Panama, Ecuador, and Columbia, all offer free language classes to the expats.I have no gift for foreign language. I switched from a BA to a Bachelor's of Art in Teaching to avoid the 4 semesters of foreign language.
Kudos for your ability, and you are so correct that language is essential for learning and communication. My tour guide in Thailand learned English by watching tv. Amazing!
Enjoy your day, friend.

Especially when dealing with non-western cultures. You can learn a few courtesy expressions in few days. A lot of tourists use translation aps.
Much of staff used in state department work either have a lot more training in languages needed, at the college or equivalent level or more likely are first or second generation US immigrants, to whom the language sought, is already their first language. Then there is the sell out problem. The problem with most of those from the relevant US or local ethnic community is that they are so willing to please, they know what their superiors want to hear, and give it to them.
The truth is that most of those operating at the policy level have little to no language and cultural training.
The people that know the most about a country face a dilemma play along and get along, or remain at a low level position forever or worse be removed. This is trait common to government agencies in general not just the state department, intel agencies, or the "department of war."
The best known example was that of the state department's China experts during the McCarthy era.
But I've seen this institutionally inside government agencies during ordinary times. Policy occurs in an echo chamber created by the venality of ambitious people who for the most part don't shiv a git about the local customs and language or even the nominal responsibilities of the department or agency.
Let's look at a few current snafus caused by this very problem-
translated in part-
Below is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable analysts of Chinese and Russian military policy and OOB below. He says in this interview that his views are not popular in the professional community. Why? Because he knows what he's talking about and doesn't cater to the policy blowhards who want to advance their careers by telling the boss what they want to hear, to sell weapons, and advance their careers.
Many of those the government gives language training to, go abroad to either to kill people in the course of their mission, or to meddle in or overthrow the foreign government of the country they been trained to "understand."

Been happily retired
for 25 years now. Am not bored yet.
Made a vow to not become a mall walker ( too much enticement to spend money), stay away from casinos (ditto), and not become a night owl (late night widget ads - see above).
Pouring myself into gardening/farming has kept me busy between traveling around the National Monument circuit.
Am relatively healthy for 76, but starting to get a little winded faster.
I don't miss busting ass on the jobsite and climbing ladders all day long. Took it's toll on my joints, but probably has kept me in good physical shape until I was able to retire at 54. And I enjoyed the work of helping save lives. Fire sprinklers do that.
Starting to put on the pounds now though.
Yep, set my goal of retiring early when I was 18, although 35 was the target. Oh well, missed it by a tad.
Too each his (or her) own.
YMMV
If I had it all to do over, I would have become a hedge fund manager.
Thanks for the OT.

OK, my math is a little off
Retired 21 years. Feels like 25. Lol.
As an aside, when I became an apprentice sprinklerfitter, in 1972, the average fitter lived 3 years past retirement. Which was a big enticement to retire early, before it killed me.
Neither Russia nor China is our enemy.

Hey, e1!
Ah, growing food, or trees, or flowers, beats the hell out of watching tv and browsing malls!
I spent my spare time from 1986 until 2015 or so raising cattle and horses. Cattle got me the ag exemption on my property taxes, as did breeding horses. 20 head of cattle, more or less, 1 to 3 mares, more or less.
Well, I envy you for your early retirement, and since I had no idea of the shortened life span post-retirement in your field, I am happy you followed through with your plan. Wow.
Most solo practitioner attorneys stay the course until they are around 80. I am 7 years away. In 6 years, my secretary's kids will be out of high school. We shall see.
Over and over, I met fellow tourists in their 80s going on their first international tours. Frankly, that's too late. They couldn't do walks, climbs, carry luggage, had trouble with digesting unfamiliar foods.
You mentioned national monuments. That is a great idea, one I acted upon back in the '70's and early 80's. National parks, history museums, state capitals, and so on. One of the reasons why I haven't visited New Zealand is that I do not have to cross the international time zone to see beauty in nature, with tons of history thrown in for good measure.
Enjoy every minute of your retirement! You are doing it in style, my friend!

Being a lawyer I think you will appreciate this
I had jury duty this week and was selected for the jury on a domestic violence case involving a lesbian couple. Both individuals did call 911 after the incident occurred. I'm not sure why the DA pressed charges since it was nothing more than a minor physical altercation between the two resulting in some minor skin abrasions to the victim who did not seek or need medical attention for the abrasions, didn't want to put any restraining order on her partner, and didn't want to press charges. The DA filed 2 charges, 1: causing great bodily injury, and 2: intent to cause great bodily injury. We deadlocked on the first charge and found not guilty on the second charge.

If a victim does not wish to pursue charges and signs a non-prosecution affidavit, the cases are dropped.
These types of cases go to civil court where a protective order can displace the aggressor outside their own home and 200 yard distance from their victim for up to 2 years, depending on the physical injury done.
We do not have the resources for bullshit cases such as you were privileged to hear and decide.
