10/06 Open Thread - Mad Hatter Day
Today is National Mat Hatter Day To answer some obvious queries;
What is it? A Day to act silly.
Why? Why not or, should you prefer, porque no?
Why 10/6? Lewis Carroll's mad hatter's hatband contained a tag saying "In this style 10/6".
How did it come to pass? It is alleged that it was created in 1986 in Boulder Colorado by a group of bored computer technicians who felt that we needed a day of silliness.
The less obvious query: IF Mad Hatter Day is the Answer, then what is the question? is answered below.
It is also National Badger Day Who knew that Badgers were silly? Really?
The Ottomans were on the losing side in WWI. The victors then parceled out designated chunks for each to exploit be in charge of (these were the spheres of influence envisioned by the 1916 Sykes-Picot Agreement). Then France and England each ran around creating arbitrary and capricious borders for arbitrary and capricious states to be rules by arbitrary and capricious rulers. Some chunks of turf were designated as mandates. These were allegedly to be run by the appropriate victorious state "for the benefit of the local resident populace" until such time as they were ready for self-government, and which time the mandate would end and they would become nations. One mandate, of course, was a hoax and a fraud where the controlling state had no intention whatsoever of ever turning it over to the resident populace , but that kind of thing was to be expected from imperialist colonizer empires like England and France. This madness has, ever since, caused grief, conflict and trouble throughout the entire area, for both the local peoples and states and for much of the rest of the so-called "West".
On this date in 1923, however, a group calling itself The Turkish National Movement entered what was then Constantinople. They had objected to the Allied occupation of Constantinople and the details of the partition of the Ottoman Empire pursuant to the Armistice of Mudros sufficiently to start the Turkish War of Independence, trying to actually implement the Wilsonian principle of self determination.which everybody since WWI pays lip service to but few actually support except in rare instances. Their eventual victory led to the Republic of Turkey governed by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. They alone of all the resultant states had some say in the size, shape, boundaries and government of their nation.

Good morning QMS. I have enough trouble being

A gray day here. May be we'll get some needed rain?
Thanks for the OT and all the music.

Good morning Lookout. Wouldn't want to face off
against a real badger, they're feisty little beasts. I've been a hat wearer most of my life, and perhaps always a bit mad as well, so it's definitely fine with me.
Thanks for the video.

Good morning, El, et al!
Well, I read the State Bar Journal's article about where to get my AI ChatGPT Toolkit. It is the first user's manual issued in the US.
It begins with a reminder that our Rules of Professional Conduct requires lawyers to be proficient with new technology. The rest of the article is about what to do if and when things go wrong, suggesting lawyers obtain malpractice insurance before using it.
My head hurts. Not a good day to wear a hat.
Thanks for the OT and great tunes, friend!

We old hands are royally
pissed at this trend. We have a responsibility to be proficient at using the technology, but not forced to use it. Yet.
By the same token, hallucinations have caused many attorneys to get sued. Some AI hallucinations have found their way into briefs at the Texas Supreme Court.
We of the Old Guard are refusing to use this crap, but are awaiting some future "test" to see if we are proficient, so as to meet the ethics requirement. Good thing I am very close to retiring.

The risk of chatcpt making up citations is too great
to use it for much of anything except simple and straightforeward non=legal information and/or narrative such as an explanation of what a bicycle is or what mpg means, etc, which you then must scrupulously review. Probably more PITA than assist. Your summary of the manual is telling in this respect.

Do I spend my time doing my own research,
or spend my time double checking AI research.
My legal software has propounded intake forms, and they are junk.
An example: Name who you want to probate your will and manage your estate when you die. I will put no more than 3 names. First choice should be a responsible adult who lives in or near the county of the testator's residence, and who should be the spouse or someone younger. The other 2 successors should have the same qualification. In other words, don't name your Dad, as the odds are you will outlive him. Don't name the son who can't read. The intake form says to name everyone and the more the merrier. That is the exact language they use.
One size does not fit all.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Oh yeah, I know all about standard forms, generally
preferred to make my own. Primacy definitely goes to doing one's own research. The potential uses I see for ai are for it to do menial and trivial busywork, maybe stuff like scan the following documents for the words x and y as well as the phrase asdf and output document, page, and line for each instance or scan this ledger and output page and line for each number of 25,000. Stuff one could really do with the tools built into unix or linus or a package named AWK, no intelligence nor simulacrum thereof needed.

I was watching Ed. Weir
the Social Security, SSI, SSD, Medicare, etc., expert talking about proposed changes to SSD, and SSID pending now. One of the proposals is to make up new disability criteria, with a new jobs database. He thinks they want to substitute AI adjudications for human adjudication decisions on disability.
Another interesting point was his calculations on how much time there is before 30 percent cuts in SS payments. He does it by months, I can't remember the exact figure, when I divided by 12 on the calculator it was 7 years 3 months from now.

I think that I've finally
found a way to claw back, and perhaps enjoy, a little peace in the face of all of the ballistic dreck into which life in America has devolved- gradually, then suddenly.
I have decided that giving a shit is harmful to my health, and especially so to my mental health. This morning, I sat down at my machine here, and found 4 political-fundraising emails that had somehow escaped my filters, and 9 political-fundraising text messages (which I haven't been able to figure out how to preemptively filter out yet), from the last 24 hours. All are from dem candidates or wannabes, saying things like "We haven't done a damned thing other than line our own pockets in the previous few decades, but this time we really mean it- and a lot of you are actually stupid enough to believe that, and will give us money anyway. Isn't that cool?"
No. No, it is not. There is nothing whatsoever I can do to help with the current situation, and there sure as hell is nothing that any of these scum-sucking wankers plan to do other than abscond with as much as possible of the donated funds before anybody else notices.
They must think that we are all utter idiots, at this point, to continue with the begging. Posse Comitatus has been dead for years, and it won't be long before there are tanks in the streets of those cities whose populations had the temerity to vote for the wrong party. And the "opposition party" is doing less than nothing about it, politically speaking. If the ones already sucking that cash tit in office can't be bothered, why would any person with an IQ above room temperature believe that somebody "new" (but still claiming membership in the same confederacy of dunces) would be at all inclined to do anything differently?
There is no political solution. I have finally, at long last, committed to myself to simply stop caring. This is the way that it was planned to be by Important People- so, so be it. I'm glad that I've killed off all my other social media presence. There's no time left to waste on it, just as there is no more money left to waste on yet more unfulfilled promises.
Now, it is just time to pour an Adult Beverage and watch everything (and my liver) burn. And maybe to talk about food, music, and gardening with a tiny handful of other like-minded persons, during the time remaining before one of those tanks rolls over me.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.

I had an adjunct contracts professor who used to say, "Who shives a git?" from time to time in front of the class. At the time I hadn't heard that before, and it always made me laugh when he said it, mostly because it was so irreverent, and compared favorably to the other stuffy profs there. He got the ax before the term was over, I kind of knew he would. I was sorry to see him go. I thought he was a great teacher. Then we got some boring dweeb.
The other thing that came to mind were the principles of wu wei, 無爲 act without acting. The other was 物極必反, (in Chinese Wùjíbìfǎn; in Korean sa geuk pil ban) as a matter goes to an extreme, by necessity it becomes or goes to its opposite. Of course, in the process I feel we may be consumed. Oh well. Rod Serling had a line, in one of his parodies on the Berlin Wall, "One does what one can." I think Kurt Vonnegut said "And so it goes" about slaughter during WWII. Anyway, this is about the extent of my insufficient coping mechanisms.

Hi EL!
Always enjoy your collection of anniversaries and the associated tunes.
That's an interesting story about Turkey and the mandate, etc. Ho Chi Minh from Vietnam, and Kim Kyu-sik, from Korea, went to the Paris Peace Conference to lobby for independence of their respective colonized nations, under the principle of self determination, but were blown off leading to major wars years later.
Thanks for the OT!

Uncle Ho didn't have a chane at that conference -
It was one thing to divvy up somebody slse's empire, and even there, nobody got elf determination out of the box and the Turks had to fight a war for it, but Vietnam was previously a French colony, and none of the colonial powers (everybody but the US) would support gratuitously freeing one of someone's colonies
Glad you like the column.
