Saturday Open Thread - 9/20/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!
My Friday was much more work intense than anticipated, and the time I normally spend putting an OT together on Friday evenings was spent doing some necessary activities at the office and at home.
Aside from the usual pablum, I found nothing video-wise to post. I will find some goodies for us throughout the morning.
So, I did some self-examination about the Kirk murder and the heinous reaction so many on the left went to social media to post. My secretary asked me if I would fire an employee for pissing on his grave, and I said it would depend on many factors. She couldn't believe it. Firing is the least I could do!
After thinking about it, I explained my position this way: Shooter hates victim and justifies the murder by hate. Other haters justify the shooter's action and laugh about the dead victim. That is murder, and I see no justification for it. That is laughter coming from people who have been propagandized all their lives. They are as cruel and inhumane as the shooter, but they did not aid and abet, are only "guilty" of being hateful, nasty people. Would I have an employee like that? I would make a considered decision and not act in haste. There are numerous factors to consider, not just my abhorrence.
Do I applaud Gov. Greg Abbott's call to fire all school teachers in Texas who celebrated Kirk's murder, revoke their certifications, ban them for life from entering a campus? Absolutely not. Free speech is protected. Government needs to butt out, and each employer needs to make a decision on a case by case basis. Government has way more on its' plate to address besides tracking everyone on social media to dox them, ruin their already screwed up lives over hateful but legal speech.
Just maybe my education and profession influences me to to suppress my anger and revulsion out of duty and out of respect for the Constitution. I betray my heart, but stay true to my mind. If I can defend 17 murder defendants with all my might, with only one being found not guilty, I can defend warped, indoctrinated idiots from being ostracized and fired by government edict that violates the Constitution when they have committed no crime at all.
So, here we are folks, once again the battle is horizontal while we are distracted from the 1% shredding our rights and taking all we have for themselves. The 99% are all together on the same boat the 1% wants to sink. We won't be around when they piss on our watery graves.
This is an open thread, open to everything you friends can think of to share with us all.

Happy Saturday, good people!
I hate ants, and hate the exterminator company that will not return my calls for them to come crawl under the house, spread poison, kill or move the mounds away, and I could be able to make myself a cup of coffee without getting bitten 5 times. My arms are so whelped, I have to wear long sleeves in 97 deg. weather. I am as aggravated at the exterminator as the ants!
So, your turn friends.
Let 'er rip!
edit: Make that 18 murder cases, 2 not guilties. Forgot about my friend accused of murdering her husband. She did kill him. (self defense) The sheriff was almost in tears when he found out in trial about her years of physical abuse and said if she had told him, she would have been given flowers instead of an indictment.

Good morning!
As Noam said...
Goebbels was in favor of free speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you’re really in favor of free speech, then you’re in favor of freedom of speech for precisely the views you despise. Otherwise, you’re not in favor of free speech.

If we don't believe in free expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.

Seems to me Bondi shouldn't have passed the bar given her "hate speech" crack down threat. At least there seems to be some backlash.
Celebrating any murder is immoral to my mind, but not illegal.
And we've not mentioned pro-Palestine speech. What the hell happened to the 1st amendment?
Hope y'all are doing well! Thanks for the OT...

Good morning, Cap'n!
The Supremes are more interested in politics than the Constitution.
When we want to use censorship for speech we dislike, we just change the definition of the target subject.
Speech critical of Zionism is anti-semetic, but the majority of Zionists are Christians all over the world. Does it make sense to claim calling out Huckabee as a Zionist genocide supporter anti-semetic? And putting a metaphorical piece of duct tape over our mouths might give the the world the impression that all Americans support genocide? And that makes us safer and more secure?
I think Bibi will green light sinking the aid flotilla. Iran might get the blame, false flag tactic writ large.
Oh, well, my cooking project is to prepare a roast. I nee to check my oven to see if the temperature is the same as what shows on the damn gauge!
Smooth sailing, friend! Enjoy your day!

Sounds yummy!
bacon is so much easier to prepare and cook than the long process of cooking a ham bone for the broth, etc...
I use kitchen scissors to trim off excess fat, and cut the bacon into pieces. I brown it in a skillet and finish cooking it in with the boiling boil.
When I say, "eat bacon", it has no religious or political purpose, friend!

Good morning, LO!
Bondi is not qualified for her job, but Trump seems to prefer young, attractive women in his administration.
MAGA might have splintered irreparably over this 1st Am. issue, given it began the split over the suppression of the Epstein files.
We are waiting for the annual county fair and parade to be done with before we get out and about. They block the hwy through town for a couple of hours.
I hope your shopping trip to Trade's Day was a success, dear friend!

Good morning otc, thanks for the OT. Basta!
Charlie Kirk didn't deserve to be shot. Fini! The hue and cry about it and about the way various folks react to his assassination is severely excessive and outrageously selective and hence phony to boot. E.O.M.
The fire ants, however, do deserve to die. I have no experience with the breed. I once spent a good part of one year tracing down and sealing each point of entry to our house used by the local argentine ants and they have not bugged us since. I keep a spray bottle of an orange (the fruit) based spray handy outside for hammering any exploration trails climbing exterior walls but seldom need to use it anymore except in times of extreme drought.
When we had our trailer, I recall one RV park that had criminally excessive ant problems (Santee Lakes, Social Progressive, FWIW) I kept a shaker bottle of diatomacious earth in the trailer which we would put down completely encircling every point of contact with the ground and that kept them out. This is lethal to insects and arachnids, but very little else and is a very fine powdery substance. If one could contrive of a method to spray it all over the ground under the house it would very likely provide some relief, especially if repeatedly applied. A humongous turkey baster or fireplace bellows rigged up to emulate a 50's era "Flit"(TH) sprayer comes cartoonishly to mind. It is such a fine powder that something could be rigged up to spray it a considerable distance using compressed air and it is just possibly that some print sprayers (or powder coating sprayers??) could do the trick depending upon the distances involved. So, I just googled diatomacious earth sprayer and, Behold!, there are a lot of them on the market in various sizes shaped and capacities from all the usual sources. If you have sufficient places aroung the pereimeter from which the stuff could be sprayed in under ye olde manse, it would be worth procuring one plus a supply of the powder and giving it a shot.

Good afternoon, el!
We are going shopping today and will get a bag of the magic ant killer. My home is on blocks, and a person can get up under it and spread ant poison.
I have been in this home since 1990, and have never seen what I am seeing now. They are mostly coming out of an electrical outlet near the sink and sometimes they are so numerous, they look like solid pieces of brown paper or wood.
Washing dishes gets me covered up, hands, arms, and they attach to my clothing, and bite me all over my body. I can't see them over or under my clothes, discovering them the hard way. My hands and arms are covered with red spots and pockets of pus that it is embarrassing to go out in public. I look like I have some exotic disease!
Well, I wonder what sticker shock I will have at the store today. Last week I learned a Reynolds Wrap 150 ft roll of aluminum foil cost $18. Store brand was $9.00. No worries! The tariff war will bring back factories any day now...They will be up and running in just a few weeks! And robots do not get workers' comp and do not unionize, so it will be Beautiful!
Enjoy your day, my most eloquent friend!

Electrical outlets are a pain, and there are two points
of attack depending upon when and how the house was built. You can caulk the plate to the wall and the outlets to the plate, or try to caulk all access to the box, if any. I went through many, many tubes of caulk on our place.

Everything at my home
near water is caulked. I believe they ear through it!
Walmart had sold out of the DE, so we will try Lowe's tomorrow. I did find out vinegar/water spray doesn't do what they say it will. Does not kill all of them on contact, and does not disrupt the flow.
sigh...
And I have to wash dishes soon. I dread it.
I will take a paper towel, saturate it with Dawn, wipe off the counter around the sink, and wash dishes really fast!

The ants
don't confine themselves to just Santee Lakes. They're all over Santee. They're only a problem around my house during the summer. As long as I don't leave any food out they tend to stay outside.

Hey, sp!
I don't know what to do about the leaving food out problem. Where do I store bread? Taco shells? The butter dish? Kitchen garbage? I am at my wits' end. Hence, the resort to getting an exterminator to crawl under the house and treat this with whatever chemicals they use in that industry.
We had a few ants outside during our rainy spring and summer, but it has been dry for about 3 weeks. Maybe they are drawn to water? They have appeared in droves starting about 3 weeks ago.
Did you think it requires courage and nerves of steel to stand in front of a kitchen sink and wash pots and pans? Well, Mister, IT DOES!
Have some fun this weekend, friend!

This is the one I use.
Got it at Amazon. (Link) $9
Hey, pr!
I am pretty sure I can afford that gadget if I could locate the damn DE!
I just haven't had to be very creative to clear the ants out before. We double caulked around some plumbing under the kitchen sink and bathroom sink, and last year's flood of scorpions dwindled to exactly one scorp this year. That one might have slipped in through an open door from the outdoors.
Enjoy your weekend and may it be vermin free, vermin to include nutty politicians and influencers. See, I can change definitions of words just as well as any Zionist can!

You can get DE at any hardware store.
It works great. I blow it everywhere.
We will shop at Lowe's
and Tractor Supply tomorrow. Walmart carries it, but it was out of stock today. I think we may have something around here that will work as a sprayer with a bit of McGiver-ing.

Watching that interview....
..... I don't think Nima expected that massive verbal download from Max Bluementhal.
To tell you the truth, I'm not sure why any part of this criminal scandal is important to anyone? There's nothing that can be done about it. MAGA at this point is just dead weight. Trump doesn't need them anymore. The Turning Point people have their Jesus to cling to. The US government is both corrupt and complicit with Bibi and his millionaires. The Epstein freaks are never going to find what they are looking for. The nation is already an accessory to genocide and other heinous acts....
But what difference does any of it make? I don't really care who killed Charlie Kirk. The government has been openly corrupt as long as I can remember. It's always the same people and the same evil.
It was interesting for about 15 minutes, but I can't imagine wasting another minute of my life on this endless political shitshow.
hey Pluto's Republic thanks for dropping by
What matters is the resistance, both here in the US and elsewhere. Trump is clearly a wannabe Hitler of some sort, but he's too stupid to be Hitler, and he's weighed down by a context in which the likely outcome of his actions is a lot of push-back and a United States in steep decline. And, unlike with Hitler, we won't have to wait until a Russian army of some sort saves us if we are to triumph against Trump.
However, Blumenthal reports that the war for the mass media is far from over. The Zionists are attempting to buy every channel they can get their hands on. There is push-back on this front too, but it is still very early.
I know it's early just yet, but what do you know about the Russia-Venezuela agreement?

Hi otc, your battle with the ants sounds awful. I'll think about
what we've used here for ants and put something at the end of my comment.
This expanding wave of punishing people for saying what they think on any side of Charlie Kirk's murder is a bad and scary development. When these things start we think we're talking about the other guys. But as Robespierre found out, it can come back to bite you (or severe your head from your shoulders).
I found a few things this week that addressed my concerns way better than my puny words. Here is Jonathan Turley, who used to opine on MSMBC for Rachel Maddow. He is a conservative, but I find his legal arguments compelling and spot on. His reasoning on the constitution and the first amendment resonated with me.
The clips from Bill Maher's Real Time this week posted by Vigilant Fox on Substack also seem concisely on point.
Bill Maher hits the nail on the head.
And here in France many are exercising the right to assemble. Not sure how much free speech and the right to assemble are protected here in spite of "Fraternité"
About your ants: Diatamaceous Earth can help but moisture is not its friend. Also it's low impact. You can use it in your house though. We get ours from Amazon. Last year we actually sent away for Nematodes and they were surprisingly effective. There are species which predate ants.
We had some come back this year so I sprayed 15-20% Hydrogen Peroxide where they were coming into the kitchen and into the office. Then I went outside with it and sprayed where I thought they were coming from. It worked better than I expected and after a week no mas.
Sprinkling ground spices like clove and cinnamon is also helpful.
For your welts which I assume are terribly miserable, an 80% spray of DMSO can take the sting or itch out of many types of bites. We buy ours on Amazon. 99% pure (It crystalizes under 68°f) so it needs a bit of dilution. The stuff has some remarkable qualities for pain, but it also works on bug bites.
I'm like a madwoman: running around my pantry sprinkling full strength Peppermint oil to keep mice away from service entrances and in storage drawers. They hate peppermint (menthe peperita). Then sprinkling ground cinnamon along the baseboard areas in our bedroom to keep away fleas brought in by our bon chien (dog). During dry periods I sprinkled DE (diatomaceous earth) on the aggregate terrasse on the front of our house especially in front of doors for fleas and ants. It made me feel better and we had fewer but not sure it had anything to do with DE.
Bonne chance et bonne courage as they say here.

I've used diatomaceous earth on ants too
You have to be persistent in its use. Also, I used it in southern California, generally a dry place.
"PayPal is evil" -- Max Blumenthal
Well, Cass,
I am nothing if not persistent!
I hope to have time to watch the Nima/Max vid tonight. I am sick of the political dominance of MSM and even alt media about the assassination, but I have to know what's coming, and that means observing and educating myself about opinions and reactions from politicians. Kirk was a person I had never heard of, and he spoke to youth, I am old, and he was religious, I am not, and he was conservative, which I am not. While he lived, I didn't notice if he had any effect on my life at all, but now that he is dead, man oh man, does it take front row center in the political theater. It's like there was a before, and now there is the after.

Greetings, dm!
I haven't tried cinnamon here, but a client brought me some to the office when an ant bed showed up right at the base of the wheelchair ramp. It didn't work, so I resorted to commercial poison, which did work. But in a kitchen? No way!
I do have some hydrogen peroxide, might try that tonight. As for the discomfort, the bites hurt for about 10 minutes, but a tiny anti-histamine pill will stop in in 5. The swelling and redness in the middle of the bite, the collection of pus at the center, is unsightly and sore to the touch, doesn't require any meds. I read that extruding the pus leaves a puncture in one's skin that invites more infection. It does recede in a week or so.
My day, like yesterday, has been unexpectedly busy. Still, i squeezed in two vids: Maher was spot on, Turley was spot on.
France is run by a government to inept to define "assembly". Not much better here, chica!
It will be Sunday morn when you read this comment. Hopefully, you will be having some coffee and a croissant, mon cher.
I am watching a very young doe graze out in the pasture. When I made some noise raising the window shade, she raised her head and tail. I waived my hand "hello", and she immediately started grazing again.

Btw, the left party doesn't quite get what "left" means, methinks...
Enjoy your Sunday and the week ahead, friend!
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Hi again on Sunday morning.
Thanks for confirming my reaction to Turley and Maher.
I looked back at my notes on ants. The high strength peroxide in a spray bottle in the kitchen deterred them better than any other method I tried. Before working at the sink I sprayed floors, countertops and legs/feet between the two and I could work without them biting.
H2O2 is caustic at higher concentrations. Rinse immediately in water if you get it on your skin.
I start on surfaces then move to floors. Spraying upright legs did a lot to keep them off the top.
Use a wet rag to wipe surfaces. Rubber gloves. Then the floors. They gave up after a week.
I really don't like using Amazon but here in rural France it can be the only way to get some retail. We get ten litre containers delivered to our door in two days.
Oh, and I'm a ma chere ( it's a girl my lord...) and so are you.
Edit because someone said something wrong on the internet.

Good first write up about what to do with an employee
who pisses on the grave etc. I've known people who have committed war crimes, pissing on graves is mild. The only part that brings smiles to me is the payback for all of the mob action when the shoe was on the other foot.
Construction here has slowed from it's frantic pace to simply busy. At current wage levels we need a bunch of houses for about a hundred thousand, most people seem to not make much money.
I would probably been able to say Kirk was someone in politics, wouldn't have been able to say what side of things he was on, as many here know I give short shrift to extremists. Bondi's comments on 1A were an echo of the Democratic vice presidential candidate during the last election. Many don't understand you can say just about anything, then again many don't realize you can also get fired, they just can't keep you from speaking but they can fire you.
Waste of a good deer rifle which will never be used again. Mauser does make modern rifles though I'm not sure which model it was. They have cheap ones for $700 like everyone else, after that prices jump to $1,500 and a couple three thousand.
Just bought a bunch of trees. Four red maple clones, four Ginella Maples, a couple of the hybred Ginellas that grow more tree like and turn very red, four clumps of aspen, three to a clump, mostly eight of nine feet tall, trunks an inch or so. I guess buying trees when I'm pushing 70 is being optimistic.
Tech market on fire.
Regardless, extremists don't determine elections, moderate vote switchers do, and here in America we vote.
Hey, bn!
What part of the country do you live? Good luck with the trees. Live long enough to see them grow, ok?
Dems are hateful to Rs, especially when in control, then vice versa.
I just have a major concern about censorship and criminality. If my employee was being an ass online, I would set parameters. The consideration would and should me mine, and mine alone, not the gummint.
My secretary had a Trump bumper on her vehicle which people could see. I wanted to say something, but I live in a red county, so in the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter. I didn't like it, nobody else cared.
If an essential employee was spouting off idiocy on the social media that actually hurt my business, that employee would be replaced.
All that said, it is not essential for me to like an employee, or agree with the, as the essential is the bottom line. Gummint can butt out, and the 1st Am did once guarantee that.
My Dad gave me my shot gun and deer rifle, and my late hubby gave me my pistol. I used to be a crack shot, but I need to practice. I will get around to that when it gets cooler here.
Have a fun evening and fun Sunday, Bn!

@on the cusp I think your
I think your perspective on employees voicing ideas is the same as almost all businesses. No one cares much unless it hurts the bottom line then it's adios. Good reason to keep one's politics moderately private.
Tweet re Kirk from Van Jones
"Charlie Kirk and I were not friends. At all. In the last week of his life we were beefing hard. ... But the day before he died he did something that shocked me. He sent me a personal message calling for personal dialogue, wanting me to come on his show. He said we could be gentlemen together. He said we could deal with our disagreements agreeably. In the past week and a half watching people talk about civil wars and censorship and all this stuff coming out of his death, I just thought it was important to let people know, don't put that on Charlie Kirk. Because the last day of his life, he was reaching out to have—not more censorship—more conversation, more dialogue, with somebody who was one of his adversaries, me."
