Saturday Open Thread - 9/6/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!

I hope you are all in fine fettle this morning.

As we watched an old movie this afternoon, I was attending to an ant sting on my hand. The movie? "Them!". I had no idea what it was about. JtC is so funny, huh?

A site member mentioned Trinidad, the crime and drugs, his horrid days spent there. Usefewersyllables, methinks. And I drifted back in time to a 3 night trip I took years ago, when my friend and I went to Trinidad.

I think the flight was just over 5 hrs from Houston, and the taxi driver there taking us to our hotel was also a licensed guide. We visited a bird habitat sponsored by Prince Charles and Camilla, a Hindu temple, and a our hotel was right beside the capital building, I watched the country's President leave the building, give a speech, get in his limo, and haul ass.

Every night, we went to a different place to drink booze and watch/listen to steel drum bands. The local crowd was friendly, and nothing about the experience suggested crime.

Of all things, one evening, we decided to just dine in the hotel diner, not the fancy restaurant. It was there I ate the best, most delicious, hamburger of my life. To this day.

I lucked out and didn't get killed by drug lords in central America, or hungry lion in Africa.

Now, friends, if you are reading this, you, too, are lucky and haven't been killed.

Let's celebrate!

Well, this is an open thread, limited by...very damn little!

Let us all know what's on your mind, friends!

I like Dennis' idea of a "department of peace". Sadly we are light years from that attitude.

"Dept of War" is honest cause we foment wars everywhere we can. What happened to the so called peace president? He never made the scene.

Y'all take care and be well. Thanks for the OT!

@Lookout Yeah, Dept. of War is an honest branding. We never cease planning the next war, even when engaged in a current one. We present ourselves to the world as having a representative government, so the world sees our election results, and we voters get blamed. MAGAs were betrayed.
One client came to the office to check in with the latest development in a contract dispute, and joined me for a bull shit session. He is ex-military, a retired dr. who was a coroner, and he has lived in countries all over the world. He thinks Tulsi will be the next president. I suggested that would limit us to supporting only the Gazan genocide, and otherwise abandoning other regime change operations. An improvement, I asked? No response from him.
Enjoy your day, friend, and I hope your Trade's Day visit is a good one!

"Hairy Ass Truman", as he was then known, signed a law abolishing the WAR DEPARTMENT and creating some consolidated Military Establishment which was to be under civilian control, a name reeking of bureaucracy so Congress stepped in and renamed it the Department of Defense because it was allegedly to have an expanded role in maintaining peace, foreign affairs, intel gathering and all that hokum. In truth, it was still the WAR DEPARTMENT, its job being to foment and fight wars, sometimes with the help of the CIA and the State Department. I have always held that they should name it back, telling it like it is, so to speak, and now they have. Bravo!

My wife and I always wanted to go the the ASA Wright center on Trinidad and Tobago, and there was a tour group that offered somewhat costly trips to go there and spend several days birding and then return home. We never made it. We have hit a few places in the Western Caribbean, but pretty much nothing else so we tried to book a cruise to hit several ports of call in the Central and Eastern C, including T&T, where we booked a day long excursion to the ASA Wright. Sadly, shortly out of FL the ship was hit with Noro Virus such that enough of the passengers and crew were infected that ports of call turned us away so it was aborted, so we have yet to get to T&T or most of the Caribbean Islands. Still on the To Do list, however, I guess, Department of Political Purity searches and all, once we figger out how to work it.

Farmers' Market this morning, then back home to test the irrigation system repairs I did late yesterday. The town fall festival is today, so the reasonable routes to the Farmers' market are closed, but we have the alternate routes all figured out. First, of course, the birds must be fed and all like that, so I guess I'll go get started.

One thing is that I need to upgrade this unit because of some hung updates and one renegade Java utility, so I can't be certain when I'll be up and running again if I decide to do that shit sometime this weekend.

be well and have a good one

@enhydra lutris We had lunch at the Center after walking thru the habitat. The guide was very knowledgeable, and the visitor's center was a veritable history museum. We had lunch there, met birders from around the world. And their photo equipment was remarkable. You would love it, friend.
Oh, I know Dept. of War is honest branding, but the whole thing is for attention, and brings war ideology to the front of the line. First resort, not last.
Irrigation project = physical labor. Computer upgrades = time and soul suck (and innocent spouses tip toeing around so as not to disturb the clicking, hour after hour.)

Does anybody really believe the boat with 11 people the president had extrajudicially executed off the coast of Venezuela were drug traffickers? How dumb do they think we are? If the get away with this, and the probably will, how long do you think it will be before they start in on our own citizens here in the US?

of the many who also believe that it is irrelevant. If I walk down the street intending to steal somebody's car I have still not committed a crime and may not be summarily executed for my plans, especially if they are merely alleged by my executioner and not proven.

There is no proof as the the possession of drugs nor as to the plan to deliver them to the US, hence no right to murder those people. If they had the drugs and the plan, then they have committed conspiracy to do a bad thing, still not warranting execution, because the actual delivery doesn't warrant execution and they could change their mind at any time prior to actual delivery.

Obomber droned US citizens in Yemen and began the presidential kill list.

The public case for the Obama administration’s private decision to kill al-Awlaki rested on secret intelligence. Other than public professions of al-Awlaki’s support for or involvement in terrorist plots, the Obama administration never charged al-Awlaki with a crime or even presented concrete evidence of his guilt—apart from alluding to having that evidence in the form of secret intelligence.

Trump follows in the wake. He said this week, "I'm President and can do whatever I want."

@Socialprogressive Drug runners, lots of drugs, headed for the US, BECAUSE WE SAY SO. No actual evidence is required. The video I saw showed us blowing up a small boat with 3 men aboard, not 11. We blew up a second boat, but no brag, no details on that one. We don't know how many we murdered on that one.
How can we track drugs in international waters when we can't track drugs coming in from all over the world on US 59/69? We can't track drugs entering our cities? Our neighborhoods? We couldn't track down the cocaine FOUND IN THE WHITE HOUSE, iirc!

I’m certain that there are nice parts of Trinidad, just like there are nice parts of other countries with bad reputations. In Mexico, the drug runners are the cartels, and it is very wise to avoid cartel-heavy areas. In Trinidad, unfortunately, the drug runners are every other person with a boat. So it is very wise to avoid the shipyards, many marinas, and chandleries, and some of the waterfront bars are very dicey indeed. There were heavily-armed police at the front of every store in Chaguramas, and we were repeatedly warned off certain destinations and activities by the marina staff. And yes, I did hear gunfire on two occasions. Regrettably, the entire reason I was there was to work on a boat, so there you go. Many waterfront areas in Trinidad are best reserved for experienced urban warriors, in the literal sense. It is an acquired taste…

Having said that, I also developed a taste for doubles; and Trini salt fish, rice, and eggs is one of the more amazing breakfasts ever. And sweet pan music everywhere (if you ever get a chance to hear the Tunapuna Engine Room, go!)… So, there is something there for everyone. I simply choose other Caribbean islands for my maritime/aquatic limin’.

@usefewersyllables Trinidad is the only Caribbean Island I have explored. I am not a swimmer, and red heads have to be careful when on a beach in direct sun.
The purpose of the trip was to see a sloth rescue center. The tour with the local guides was abruptly cancelled when we got off the plane. They backed out because the road to the rescue center was closed. We hailed a taxi driver, chatted with him on the way to the hotel, showed him our itinerary, and he flashed his government issued tour guide card, so he literally stayed on call for us the entire trip. He picked out the safe bars and music venues, he took us shopping, to parks, historical sites, the tar pits, and made sure we had a safe trip.
I can't count the times a guide has instructed me to stay within 2 sq. blocks, past that is unsafe. Dublin, Cartagena, Bangkok, Panama City, and on and on... But, isn't it just the same in Houston? Chicago? Los Angeles? Hell, where I live, shoppers at Walmart are packing pistols.
Well, I am so sorry your T-time was mostly dangerous, but at least the food and music was memorable, friend. Enjoy your next journey to the Caribbean and tell us all about it!

competition in Grenada called Panorama, and it features all the best sweet pan (steel drum) bands from all over the Caribbean. The Trinis win almost every year- Tunapuna won the last time we were down island for it. It is a blast; almost as much fun as Juvé (the Grenadian Carnival) or Spicemas. Highly recommended!

Islands are like fine wine. All different, all unique. There’s a French winemaker who gave me my favorite quote about wines:

There is no such thing as a bad wine, just as there is no such thing as a bad woman.

(Pause)

However, there are certain wines, and certain women, who are perhaps better for someone else

I really need to go back. I’m seriously missing it. The only problem with me going back again is that I would not come back…

This is so counterproductive.

Rounding up the Korean nationals working at the new construction site in Ellabell Georgia will no doubt delay construction of the plant. Ultimately, the Hyundai manufacturing campus was slated to bring 8500 jobs to the area. I've traveled through this area many times, and know Georgia fairly well, (I have family members that don't live too far from the Detention Center. I've met a lot of Georgians through the extended family over the years).

The news reports describe Hyundai campus area as in a Savanah suburb but the truth is it's quite underdeveloped near the Hyundai facilities and I doubt seriously that Hyundai or LG would have found anywhere near the required number of construction workers in the region. The road infrastructure and housing there is inadequate. The key thing to keep in mind is that construction at the site is a temporary job.

Let's see, South Korea promises 350 billion plus in US capital investments, commits itself to US shipbuilding, in addition to the tens of billions it has already invested in the US, so Trump kicks them in the teeth. Then the opposition in South Korea uses the incident to criticize the current administration with a view toward destabilizing it, "Lee offers 350 billion to US for a blow to the back of the head (stab in the back)." Isn't that so clever?

There is one of those US super right wing religious fundy conferences going to South Korea next week to stir shit up, like Morse Tan and Gordon Chang if they can. In one of the promo posters, I'm pretty sure I saw Eric Trump maybe from an old conference. Whether he's there or not, he's either already there or will be in Korea to sell the trump crypto schemes.

Will South Korean companies make all those big investments in U.S.?

Hyundai Motor Group announced that it would invest $26 billion in the U.S. between 2025 and 2028, expanding its push into automotive, steel and robotics. It marks a $5 billion increase from its original $21 billion commitment unveiled earlier this year.

With the funds, Hyundai Motor plans to boost vehicle production, build a new steel mill in Louisiana and construct a robotics facility with an annual capacity of 30,000 units.

Korean Air said the flagship carrier would channel $36.2 billion to buy 103 aircraft from Boeing, including 95 passenger planes and eight freighters, by the end of the 2030s.

Once finalized, the deal would raise the Seoul-based company's total Boeing orders to 175 aircraft, up from the 72 already on its books.

Hanwha Group vowed to funnel $5 billion into Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia to install additional docks and quays to crank up the capacity of the shipyard, which Hanwha acquired late last year from Norway's Aker ASA.

Department of War? Indeed. What's the next stunt going to be? Grift on! Regime change on! Moe hits Larry, Larry hits Curly.

Thanks for the O&E OntheCusp!

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981

@soryang New reports are that very few of the SKs in detention were directly hired by Hyundai. Most had no work visas, or had not renewed their visas. They were not the renegades they were made out to be. Why we are doing this to a trade partner and ally is beyond my capacity to understand. SK was trying to avoid tariffs, and acted in good faith. The various construction contractors who hired them should be prosecuted as well, but corporate class never gets punished, does it?
Thanks for the lay of the land. Putting up a plant in the boonies with no infrastructure, no housing, seems incredibly stupid, doesn't it? No city, county, or state government oversight committees pointed this out? hmmm...
ICE had enough justification to exist without doing stupid and cruel crap like this.

The local area close to the campus road network already can't bear the traffic from what I understand. I think within the last several miles. Further away, there are large interstates, and a busy port, plenty of (nuclear) power in the area. The local area is unincorporated. When I drove in the big rig past this area around Savanah, I knew if I got off at the wrong exit, I might not be able to find an area to turn the truck around. I'm sure that can be fixed in time, but I think the difficulty of the last few miles commuting is going to make working there a bit less desirable. I know a few young men of working age in Georgia and as soon as they can a find another way to survive, they get out of the construction trades. Those I know in the construction business around here who aren't immigrants run the company and use immigrants for labor.

TSMC had problems finding labor in Arizona. If Trump wants to play hard nosed about visas, etc., you'll take forever to build anything in this region in the Southeast or maintain it for that matter. If the migrant labor isn't there, that doesn't mean you'll be able to find Americans qualified or willing to do the work. I know this from recent experience. Trump's people are so far removed from reality.

Edit: Using a lot of subs is a way to get out of providing benefits. It's been commonplace in Korea for these big chaebal corporations to do this. A law just passed last week (in South Korea) I think called the yellow envelope law, which neutralizes the advantages to the corporation of using subs. Now labor unions there negotiate for all the workers even the subcontractors. I'm not sure of the relevance here, but I doubt seriously if Georgia is concerned about worker welfare.

I can't resist the occasional ct article connecting Epstein and Trump and Mossad.
It is an interesting read, although I can't vouch for its' accuracy. We can read it and decide for ourselves if we believe Trump is being blackmailed.

My current take on the Epstein affair is that Trump is determined to bury those Epstein files at the same time claiming they are harmless. I can't make sense of that at all.

@on the cusp more ugly information still to be revealed for audiences beyond those who monitor various "conspiracy theories". The subject came up on the Weekly Round Up on Judging Freedom.

INTL Roundtable w/ Johnson & McGovern : Weekly Wrap 5-September (starts at 23:21) Interesting 3&1/2 minutes when Ray brings up the subject of Trump and Epstein. The Judge drops his head and does not look directly into the camera until Larry after two attempts is finally able to redirect the subject.

Mike Johnson's claim Trump was an informant for the FBI could be true. We know from the Whitey Bulger story it is possible to be a FBI informant and be on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives at the same time.

Every several months, European authorities find several tons of cocaine packed in Bonita Banana containers shipped from Ecuador.

Daniel Noboa has served as shipping director of Noboa Corporation. And as Gonzalez pointed out, his political career has been financed with drug money.

Noboa appears to have stolen the last election with the support of Trump-Rubio, who rushed to recognize him as the winner despite clear irregularities in the vote.

Under his watch, 70% of all the world's cocaine now passes through Ecuador's ports.

I put it in the same category as "conspiracy theorist." It's an ad hominem to discredit critics of Trump's policies. Originally, a similar phrase was coined to discredit W's critics by Charles Krauthammer.

Kurtz is a collective archetype recognizable in western culture unconsciously if not consciously as described by Carl Jung. Kurtz leads a religion or cult of terrorists in Heart of Darkness. He is resurrected in Apocalypse Now. One of Trump's other recent posts overtly alludes to Apocalypse Now by recreating a scene from the movie. It's clear the purpose of this propaganda is to mobilize the worst impulses of the psychology of the "mass mind."

Trump warns of ‘Chipocalypse’ as peaceful crowd protests planned federal deployment

“‘I love the smell of deportations in the morning,’” he posted on Truth Social, a reference to the 1979 Vietnam War movie “Apocalypse Now” where Robert Duvall’s character Lt. Col. Kilgore says, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

“Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of War,” the post continued, which included an image of Trump dressed in an Army uniform and helicopters flying in the background with the words “Chipocalypse Now.”

Will he put the heads of immigrants on poles? "Chipocalypse Now" imagery adapted for use against China converted to a domestic reference? This is a propaganda mill. A century ago TS Elliot wrote Kurtz is dead. To coin a phrase "heeee's back!"

I don't agree with a couple of his observations but overall I think he understands China. Unfortunately he's a bit of a blue blood, therefore only someone in his position could hope to understand China (according to him) Secondly, comparing the US military to a meritocracy is something of a reach.
