Even worse, I'm still in shock and at a complete loss for words.
Tracy was my friend.
I've corresponded with her for years. Been through her website of prints more than a couple of times. An amazing body of work.
Was planning on stopping by her place in the near future to buy some prints.
And to meet Sam.
Sam was the love of her life. The way she wrote about her was always with love and affection.
I so hope Sam finds a good home with someone here in the community.
I am sorry now that I waited till it was too late to choose and buy one of her pieces of art.
This is one of the most somber Open Threads I've ever done, only riveled by the sudden death of my son in '23.
Because I still just don't know what to say.
I will miss Tracy.

I have contacted the animal shelter several times, and have gotten no response at all about Sam.
Honestly, I can't verify if Sam is even alive. Not a single person working at the shelter has responded at all. I did tell them I would adopt her.
My friendship with Tracy goes back approximately 14 years. I, too, had a vague plan to go visit her, but something always scuttled the plan. Life intruded, then death did.
We must soldier on, friend, keep the light shining.

Wild afternoon in town here
yesterday afternoon. Warnings were sent out that an armed man evading a felony arrest warrant was running on foot through town, town being 6 sq. city blocks, more or less. Cop cars were racing around town, sirens blasting, and they caught him after about 30 minutes of excitement. The mug shot in the warnings showed a black man whose face I recognized. A tiny man, very uneducated, sort of the special ed type, who was always sweet, polite, always joking, and who wouldn't hurt a fly.
Just before closing time, a client came by with some info on his upcoming case, and since he is black and a local, I asked him if he could id the guy in the mug shot. Seems it was a cousin of his, and he had gotten into meth use and manufacture/sales and had become a total basket case.
The reason I didn't know if it was my little guy pal or not, I had never known his name. He was known as Biggie.
His cousin said that prison is probably the only thing that would keep him alive.

In 2006 Oregon was the first state to limit the purchase of decongestants used as a precursor in the cooking process. Actual use did not decrease but did dramatically reduce the local production. The foster homes were being overwhelmed with neglected children removed from meth production houses.
In 2012 a local county noticed the accelerated aging showing up in mug shots taken over a few years. An ad campaign ran for a number of years as part of the drug prevention program. Business Insider has an old 2012 article with some of the photos.

The area I live provided the Portland area with significant volumes of alcohol during prohibition and has never really left the habit of "easy" money filtering through government agencies. I can spot a meth head from a mile away. 40 yr olds can look like 70 yr olds.
Sudafed used to be in the recipe, and stores started limiting how many boxes you could buy. Cooks just went to stores all over town to buy the limit. Then, they began to register your name and ID at purchase point. After that, a new recipe was devised that doesn't call for Sudafed.
The recipe used to be found all over the internet.
Meanwhile, a Dollar General store 12 miles away was robbed. An armed robbery, young couple, they were arrested within 5 miles of the store. There was a cop on patrol right there.
The odds are the couple will be illegals and in a cartel. There is a subdivision in that part of the county simply chock full of gangs. All illegals.

that they changed the formula so the addicts can't make meth out of it anymore, but it no longer works as a antihistamine either. But they still market it as an antihistamine.

The ingredient the FDA magically found to be
ineffective as a decongestant was phenylephyne, and it was removed from Sudafed, Nyquil, and Benedryl. All of those products are sold as magic cold and cough remedies, but contain nothing in their remaining ingredients that are decongestants.
Meth users gave the manufacturers an easy, cheap way of producing products that cannot provide any health benefits whatsoever.
Well, once upon a time, those otc meds worked. Now, they are a waste of money. Throw 'em away, add shelf space to your medicine cabinet for something else that doesn't work.

About Benadryl
As far as Benadryl goes, the commonly available OTC form in the US and Canada has always been straight diphenhydramine, which is effectively a sedative, not a stimulant (side-effect, makes you drowsy, which is why it has off-label uses as a sleep aid). There is, or was, a version in the UK that included pseudoephedrine and a newer antihistamine, which may be what the current references are about.

The A/C quit working in the Leaf, the second real problem in 9 years. The first was the windshield washer pump stopped working a few months ago.
We don't use either all that much.

I have known people who got clean
from their heroine, cocaine, and pain pill addictions. I have known a hand full of meth users. not yet addicted, who finally quit, as long as they snorted. I honestly do not think it is possible to get clean once the meth is injected.
It is the most addictive and deadliest of all.
One guy on his way to prison told me a meth high is like experiencing an orgasm that is magic, lasting hours. He said as soon as he was released, he would get back on it. It was the best part of his life.
