News and Opinion

Sky News Smears Greta Thunberg As A Nazi To Justify IDF Attack

IDF troops have raided the Madleen, a sailboat that was carrying aid intended to break the Israeli siege on Gaza. Everyone onboard has reportedly been abducted by Israeli forces, including climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Ahead of the abduction, a senior Israeli official told Israel’s Channel 12 News that the decision had been made to stop the ship from reaching Gaza because if it was allowed through, a “wave of flotillas” would come to challenge the blockade.

This is a developing news story as of this writing with a lot more information yet to emerge. But one thing I’d like to quickly flag here is that shortly before the IDF raided the Madleen, Sky News host Jonathan Samuels strongly implied that the ship deserved to be attacked because it is full of antisemites and Hamas supporters.

During a contentious interview with Israeli journalist Gideon Levy, who voiced support for the Madleen, Samuels objected that Thunberg has been accused of antisemitism and her fellow passengers have been accused of being Hamas sympathizers, and are therefore not innocent.

“Are you sure, Jonathan, that Israel has the moral right to prevent Gaza from such a mission?” asked Levy. “I mean, from where do we take this chutzpah, as we say in Hebrew, to put this closure on Gaza even from innocent people like Greta Thunberg and her friends?”

“Yeah, perhaps the criticism is that she’s not as innocent as all that,” Samuels countered. “She’s been accused of being antisemitic hasn’t she? And there are others on board accused of being Hamas sympathizers. Therefore it could potentially be a very dangerous situation and they’re quite naive to get into it, aren’t they?”

By the way, the accusation of “being antisemitic” which Samuels appears to be referring to here is the single dumbest antisemitism smear that I have ever seen in my entire life.

Back in October 2023, Thunberg appeared in a photo holding a “Stand with Gaza” sign, causing furious backlash from the pro-Israel crowd. Eventually someone found an excuse to spin this as an anti-Jewish hate crime by pointing out that there was a small octopus plushie in the photo, claiming that the octopus is a some kind of antisemitic trope.

Thunberg, who has autism, then deleted the photo, saying, “It has come to my knowledge that the stuffed animal shown in my earlier post can be interpreted as a symbol for antisemitism, which I was completely unaware of. The toy in the picture is a tool often used by autistic people as a way to communicate feelings. We are of course against any type of discrimination, and condemn antisemitism in all forms and shapes. This is non-negotiable. That is why I deleted the last post.”

And it was THIS insanely absurd accusation that was the basis for Jonathan Samuels smearing Greta Thunberg to justify the Israeli military attacking the ship she was on.

To be clear, this demented Israel apologia was spouted before Israel took action against the aid ship. We didn’t know if Israel would raid the ship, bomb it right out of the water, or shoot everyone on board. Samuels was preemptively justifying whatever it was Israel was about to do, including mass murder on yet another Gaza aid ship.

Literally everyone who has ever publicly criticized Israel in the western world has been accused of antisemitism and being a Hamas sympathizer. If you have any kind of audience and criticize Israel’s mass atrocities in Gaza to any extent, it is absolutely inevitable that you will receive those accusations. The fact that a Sky News anchor would cite such accusations as justification for Israel attacking and potentially killing someone means that, at least in the eyes of Jonathan Samuels, anyone who criticizes Israel deserves to be murdered.

Israel apologists were already advocating an attack on the Madleen, and mass media spinmeisters were already smearing its passengers as deserving of an attack. And now that the attack has happened, the information ecosystem is being bombarded by Israel supporters trying to argue that it is actually good and normal to kidnap activists who are trying to bring aid to a starving and besieged civilian population.

This shows you that there is nothing Israel could do that these freaks would not defend. It shows you who these people are. It shows you that every argument you’ve ever heard in support of Israel is not based on facts or morality or logic, but solely on the desire to promote the information interests of a genocidal apartheid state. It tells you everything you need to know about Israel apologia in general.

Support for Israel has no basis in truth. It has no basis in ethics or rationality. It’s just a bunch of horrible people murdering, tyrannizing and stealing with the aim of conquest and domination, and then using words to justify those actions. Israel and its apologists will say whatever words they need to say in order to advance their goals of ethnic cleansing and expansionism, with no regard for what is right and what is true.

It’s just a bunch of noise. You could mentally translate every word of every Israel apologist into shrieking gibberish without missing anything meaningful, because there’s no actual content in it. It’s just people doing evil things and then making a bunch of mouth noises to stop anyone from opposing their actions.

At least four killed by Israeli fire near Gaza food point

At least four people have been killed and others injured by Israeli fire about a kilometre from a food distribution point in Gaza, Palestinian health officials and witnesses said, the latest casualties of a new system to provide supplies that critics say is unethical, chaotic and dangerous.

Palestinian witnesses said Israeli forces had opened fire on Sunday morning as people went to receive supplies from a site in Rafah run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli and US-backed group. Israel’s military said it had fired warning shots at people who had approached its forces. It acknowledged reports of injuries but did not specify how many people it believed had been affected.

Bodies were brought to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis. Al-Awda hospital said it had received the body of a 42-year-old man, as well as 29 people who had been injured near another GHF distribution point. The Reuters news agency reported that four people had been killed by the Israeli fire, while the Associated Press put the death toll at “at least” five.

The deaths bring the number of people who have been killed while trying to find food in Gaza since 27 May, when GHF became responsible for civilian food provision, to 110. More than 1,000 have been injured.

Witnesses said Sunday’s shooting in southern Gaza occurred at about 6am, when they had been told the site would open. Many had headed towards it early to try to get desperately needed food before the crowds. The military had announced on Friday that the sites would be open from 6am and that the area would be a closed military zone from 6pm until 6am.

Francesca Albanese calls for a Global Sea Fleet to Break the Siege of Gaza

IDF ordered to stop Gaza-bound aid ship carrying Greta Thunberg

The Israeli defence minister has threatened to “take all necessary measures” to prevent a humanitarian ship carrying climate campaigner Greta Thunberg from reaching Gaza. The Madleen says it is attempting to reach the shores of the territory to bring in a symbolic amount of aid and raise international awareness of the continuing humanitarian crisis.

But on Sunday, Israel Katz ordered the Israeli military to stop the ship from getting anywhere near Gaza. “I have instructed the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] to act so that the hate flotilla … does not reach the shores of Gaza – and to take all necessary measures to that end,” Katz said in a statement. “To the antisemitic Greta [Thunberg] and her friends who echo Hamas propaganda, I say clearly: You’d better turn back – because you will not reach Gaza. Israel will act against any attempt to break the blockade or to assist terrorist organisations – by sea, by air, and by land.”

Thunberg, who has said she is taking part in the mission “because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity”, has rejected previous Israeli accusations of antisemitism. ... On board the vessel alongside Thunberg are 10 other activists from Germany, France, Brazil, Turkey, Sweden, Spain and the Netherlands. They include Rima Hassan, a French member of the European parliament of Palestinian descent who has been barred from entering Israel.

Responding to Katz on Sunday, they said: “The statement by Israel’s defence minister is yet another example of Israel threatening the unlawful use of force against civilians – and attempting to justify that violence with smears. We will not be intimidated,” it added. “The world is watching.”

Rubio, Trump Accused of Criminal Obstruction for Sanctioning ICC Judges

Human rights defenders on Friday accused U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio of criminal obstruction after Rubio announced sanctions targeting four International Criminal Court judges who authorized an investigation into torture allegations against American troops in Afghanistan and arrest warrants for fugitive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Rubio sanctioned International Criminal Court Judges Solomy Balungi Bossa of Uganda, Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza of Peru, Reine Adelaide Sophie Alapini Gansou of Benin, and Beti Hohler of Slovenia "pursuant to President Trump's Executive Order 14203." The order was issued in February and sanctioned ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan and accused the Hague-based tribunal of "baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel."

"These four individuals have actively engaged in the ICC's illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America or our close ally, Israel," Rubio added. "The ICC is politicized and falsely claims unfettered discretion to investigate, charge, and prosecute nationals of the United States and our allies."

Two of the sanctioned judges authorized a probe of U.S. war crimes in Afghanistan. The other two green-lighted warrants for the arrest of Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, his former defense minister, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, including weaponized starvation and the murder of Palestinians—at least 54,607 of whom have been killed since Israel began its assault and siege of Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The ICC's Assembly of State Parties—the court's governing body—said in a statement Friday that the U.S. sanctions are a "regrettable" effort to "impede the court and its personnel in the exercise of their independent judicial functions.

Kenneth Roth, a professor at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and former director of Human Rights Watch, on Friday accused Trump and Rubio of "obstructing justice under Article 70 of the Rome Statute," the treaty establishing and governing the ICC.

Christoph Safferling, director of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy—a Germany-based foundation "dedicated to the advancement of international criminal law and related human rights"— said Friday that 80 years after the the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals, "obstructing the ICC is an affront to the commitment to justice and the rule of law."

"The court carries forward this legacy and calls for our steadfast support in the fight against impunity," Safferling added.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said Friday that he was "profoundly disturbed" by the U.S. sanctions.

"Attacks against judges for performance of their judicial functions, at national or international levels, run directly counter to respect for the rule of law and the equal protection of the law—values for which the U.S. has long stood," Türk added.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union "deeply regrets" the Trump administration's move.

Slovenia's Foreign Ministry said that "Slovenia regrets the announced sanctions by the U.S. government against four judges of the International Criminal Court, including a judge from Slovenia," and "rejects pressure on judicial institutions and influence on judicial operations."

"Courts must act in the interests of law and justice," the ministry continued. "In the current situation we will support the judge, who is a Slovenian citizen in carrying out her mandate." Due to the inclusion of an E.U. member state on the sanctions list, Slovenia will propose the immediate activation of the blocking act."

The E.U.'s blocking statute is meant to protect businesses in the 27-nation bloc from adverse consequences of foreign—particularly U.S.—sanctions.

During the first Trump administration, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sanctioned then-ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and Prosecution Jurisdiction Division Director Phakiso Mochochoko for investigating U.S. war crimes in Afghanistan. This, even after the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber II announced it would not grant a request by Bensouda to open an investigation into the alleged torture of prisoners held in U.S. military and secret CIA prisons in Afghanistan, Poland, Romania, and Lithuania.

In 2021, Khan angered human rights defenders by announcing he was seeking approval to resume an investigation into potential war crimes in Afghanistan committed by the Taliban and the Islamic State—but would exclude alleged crimes perpetrated by U.S. forces.

U.S. and Israeli officials often note that neither country is a party to the Rome Statute. However, the court has affirmed its jurisdiction "in relation to crimes committed on the territory of Palestine, including Gaza," as well as "over crimes committed by Palestinian nationals inside or outside Palestinian territory."

Responding to the U.S. sanctions, Amnesty International secretary general Agnès Callamard said Friday that "this is an attack against international justice and the fight against impunity."

"Governments who believe in a rule-based order must take all necessary measures to protect the four judges against the impact of the sanctions," she continued. "They must assure the ICC of their full support. They must voice their commitment to the independence and impartiality of the ICC clearly and loudly. They must implement all arrest warrants and support the ICC in all its investigations."

"International justice is a battleground. It has been so from the very beginning," Callamard added. "Victims know so all too well. We will keep fighting and resisting all attempts to derail, undermine, destroy the search for justice and the rule of law."

In April, the ACLU filed a lawsuit in a Maine federal court on behalf of Matthew Smith, co-founder of the human rights group Fortify Rights, and international lawyer Akila Radhakrishnan arguing that Trump's sanctions against Khan violate their First Amendment rights.

Iran Says It Obtained Trove of Israeli Nuclear Documents

Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib said on Sunday that Tehran had obtained a “treasure trove” of sensitive Israeli documents related to Israel’s secret nuclear weapons program and its relations with the US and Europe.

“The transfer of this treasure trove was time-consuming and required security measures. Naturally, the transfer methods will remain confidential, but the documents should be unveiled soon,” Khatib said.

The intelligence minister was responding to a question about a Saturday report from Iranian media that first alleged Iran had obtained a significant number of Israeli documents. So far, there’s been no official response from Israel about the Iranian claims.

The Guardian's spin on Russia's latest advances:

Russian forces closing in on Sumy city

Russian military units appear to be within 18 miles (29km) of the city of Sumy, three years after Ukraine forced them out of the northern region, while also making new and symbolically important ground in the east. Independent monitors confirmed Kremlin claims to have retaken the village of Loknia, which had been liberated along with the rest of the Sumy region during Ukraine’s 2022 spring counteroffensive. It is the latest settlement in the region to be retaken by Putin’s forces in recent weeks.

The city of Sumy, which is 200 miles north-east of Kyiv, was never occupied by Russia after the full-scale invasion, but Putin’s forces have been bearing down on the regional capital. ... The regional governor, Oleh Hryhorov, announced the mandatory evacuation of 11 more villages on 31 May, bringing the total number of evacuated settlements in the Sumy region to 213.

The Russian defence ministry further claimed on Sunday that forces had reached the western frontier of the Donetsk region, in the east of Ukraine, and were advancing in the adjacent Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time in three years of full-scale war. The ministry said forces from a tank unit had “reached the western border of the Donetsk People’s Republic and are continuing to develop an offensive in the Dnipropetrovsk region”. ...

Independent monitors said there was also evidence that Russia was advancing on the city of Kostyantynivka, in the Donetsk region, from several directions. The city has been a key logistical hub for Ukraine’s forces since February 2022 when Putin launched his full-scale invasion. A Ukrainian military spokesperson, Dmytro Zaporozhets, confirmed that Russian forces were trying to “build a bridgehead for an attack” on Kostyantynivka.

Trump tariffs could wipe out European steel sector

Europe’s steel industry faces being wiped out in the face of Donald Trump’s prohibitive 50% tariffs, high energy costs and a mountain of cheaper Chinese steel, one of Germany’s biggest industrial groups has warned. Ilse Henne, a board member at the steel, engineering and chemicals group ThyssenKrupp, said the industry faced an existential crisis after the US president’s decision last week to double tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from 25% to 50%.

Asked at a European Policy Centre conference in Brussels if she “feared a wipeout”, she replied: “Of course.” Henne, who is chief executive of ThyssenKrupp Materials Services, told the Guardian: “Steel is at the beginning of the value chain, so you create a lot of instability for all these supply chains that get disrupted that now all of a sudden have to deal with much more expensive steel.”

Steel and aluminium are foundational industries, central to everything from submarines, aircraft and cars to everyday products such as stainless steel cutlery, food mixers and joists in housing. “If the European steel industry disappears, we will have a lot of collateral damage,” Henne said. “A weak European steel industry is not only a weak European steel industry. It also puts all the other steps in the industry and the value chain in danger.”

She said Europe must step in to save the sector because it was fundamental for military security and was a large employer, and if it failed, the continent would be left reliant on the US and China for a key manufacturing material.

Trump CAVES: Returns Wrongly Deported Migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Newsom is warned of ‘criminal tax evasion’ if he withholds federal taxes

The US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has warned California governor Gavin Newsom that he would be guilty of “criminal tax evasion” if he withholds his state’s tax payments to the federal government amid threats of a funding cut by Donald Trump. Newsom had threatened to cut tax payments to the federal government two days ago after reports that Trump was preparing huge federal funding cuts targeting Democrat-dominated California, including its state university system.

“Gavin Newsom is threatening to commit criminal tax evasion,” Bessent said in a post on X. “His plan: defraud the American taxpayer and leave California residents on the hook for unpaid federal taxes.” Bessent continued: “I am certain most California businesses know that failing to pay taxes owed to the Treasury constitutes tax evasion and have no intention of following the dangerous path Governor Gavin Newsom is threatening.”

He described Newsom’s comments as “extremely reckless” and advised the governor to come up with a tax-cutting plan for California that mirrored Trump’s federal tax cutting plan, “instead of committing criminal tax evasion”.

The treasury secretary’s comments came after Newsom posted on Friday that “Californians pay the bills for the federal government. We pay over $80 BILLION more in taxes than we get back. Maybe it’s time to cut that off, Donald Trump.”

Latest on LA Protest: Trump deploys National Guard, LAPD “overwhelmed”, Looting & cars set on fire

Teargas and pepper balls used on LA protesters as Democrats decry deployment of troops

US national guard troops clashed with demonstrators in Los Angeles on Sunday as police used teargas and “less-lethal munitions” to disperse massive crowds of people protesting against Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. There were scenes of chaos amid tense confrontations between authorities and protesters outside the Metropolitan detention center in downtown LA, and a large group of demonstrators brought traffic to a stop in both directions of the 101 freeway. Footage captured on Sunday afternoon showed protesters holding signs on the freeway facing off against law enforcement in tactical gear as the sound of firing munitions echoed through the area.

The president’s decision to deploy national guard troops into Los Angeles, against the wishes of state and local officials, has sent shockwaves through American politics. California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, and other Democratic governors across the US have sharply criticized the move, describing it as an “alarming abuse of power”. Newsom has called on the administration to rescind the “unlawful” deployment. “This is a serious breach of state sovereignty – inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed. Rescind the order. Return control to California,” Newsom said.

Donald Trump ordered the deployment of the national guard late on Saturday night following days of clashes between demonstrators and US immigration authorities. The decision marked a stunning escalation in a broad crackdown on immigrants in the United States following raids across the country which have triggered protests. Trump’s federalization of the guard troops is the first time an American president has used such power since the 1992 LA riots. At that time widespread violence broke out in reaction to the acquittal of four white police officers for brutally beating Black motorist Rodney King.

The situation quickly escalated on Sunday following the deployment of some 300 national guard troops. By the afternoon, the Los Angeles police department had declared the protest an “unlawful assembly”, ordering everyone in the area to leave or face arrest. The department reported that arrests were under way and that it had authorized the use of “less-lethal munitions”. Popping sounds could be heard through the area as protesters chanted “go home” and shame. Journalists and protesters were reportedly struck. The Los Angeles police said that two officers were injured after being struck by motorcyclists attempting to “breach a skirmish line”.

Newsom had urged protesters to “stay peaceful”.

“Don’t give Donald Trump what he wants,” Newsom said.

Trump's LA ICE Raids CHAOS & CARNAGE: Cops Fire at Protesters, Injure Journalist

‘We’re not afraid of you’: LA protesters, enraged by Trump, flood the streets

Thousands of Angelenos enraged by Donald Trump’s decision to commandeer their state national guard swamped the streets around city hall and the federal courthouse on Sunday, bringing a major freeway to a standstill on Sunday. The demonstrators were met by law enforcement. But the national guard, hemmed in by the protesters and by dozens of Los Angeles police cruisers, played almost no role in any of it.

A vocal, boisterous but largely peaceful sea of protesters engulfed the north-eastern corner of downtown Los Angeles, hurling insults at Trump and at the immigration enforcement teams who had conducted mass arrests of undocumented migrants in the area on Friday. They converged on the Metropolitan detention center, the federal lockup where many protesters arrested over the previous 48 hours were being held, and an adjacent loading dock that about 50 national guardsmen, in battle gear with riot shields and semi-automatic weapons, were using as their staging ground.

The protesters did not hesitate to walk right up to the heavily armed men. “We’re not afraid of you!” one organiser with a bullhorn, John Parker, yelled. One of the many banners on display read: “National Guard LOL.” Every building and wall in the immediate vicinity was covered in profane graffiti, the most common being “Fuck ICE”, “LAPD can suck it” and “Kill all cops.”

Shortly after noon, the guardsmen, flanked by armed officers with Department of Homeland Security insignia, fired teargas into the growing crowd so a caravan of DHS and Border Patrol vehicles could push its way through. People backed off briefly and donned masks, only to come back in larger numbers within a few minutes. That was the extent of the national guard’s involvement. Within a couple of hours, the crowd had swollen to several thousand, as marchers from earlier protests – one in Boyle Heights, east of downtown, and the other at city hall – moved on the federal complex from different directions, spilling so broadly into the surrounding streets that it brought traffic to a standstill. Several drivers caught in the snarl-up honked enthusiastically to show their support. ...

California leaders including the governor Gavin Newsom and the Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass have accused Trump of compounding the problems caused by his immigration raids by taking the unorthodox step of requisitioning the state national guard. By mid-afternoon Newsom was urging the president to rescind the order. “We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved,” Newsom said. “This is a serious breach of state sovereignty – inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed.”

turnabout is fair play and it seems like any military in the world would be well within its rights to make tel aviv resemble gaza until the hostages are freed - and theoretically, following zionist logic, they would be well within their rights to use coercive measures to avoid the release of the hostages to inflict more damage on israel.

The question, to my way of thinking is whether ice was less lawbreaking than the protesters, and then one can play if from there And Trump? Since he justifies some acts on the grounds that we're being invaded, his office requires him to go to congress for a declaration of war, and if he doesn't he must be impeached. Why hasn't he invoked the insurrection act. He has this rhetoric that he uses to inflame his base, but then tries to use that hyperbole as if it were actionable facts in order to use otherwise inapplicable laws and provisions, he's pretty lawless himself when you get right down to it.

yep, ice seems to have a flair for reckless lawbreaking. trump has a flair for casual rhetoric and equivocation, recklessly applying terminology that has a solid legal definition (like "invasion") in ways that might be fine around a campfire with a quart of baked beans and a few beers, but are inappropriate for his office. his base doesn't get the difference, but it's why trump keeps getting pounded by the courts.

i guess we'll see if the country survives his massive explosion of bullshit and division.
