Saturday Open Thread - 6/7/25: Odds and ends

What a week! Trump/Musk shit show, Russia blasting Kiev surprisingly timidly, dead kids all day and everyday in Gaza...on and on it goes.
Anything you wish to post about world affairs, well, have at it!
I got disgusted with grand kids this week. On the same day, Monday, I had 2 back to back probate issues with grand kids gone nuts with greed.
One man inherited a property with 2 homes on it. He lived in one, his step-mom lived in the other until she died in accordance with law. His step mom's grand daughter claims property her grandma had no legal claim on, moved in some druggies, they are paying her rent, and the owner is being terrorized by said druggies and the grand daughter. Eviction coming soon. The man owning the property is old, scared, threatened, and the decedent's grand daughter laughs about it.
Right after that, a woman shows me a will from 23 years ago that I had prepared for her great-grandfather. It had been lost. It names her to receive the estate if her mom dies and disinherited Great grandfather's other child. Well, since the will was not probated, the kid of the disinherited child just went on Zillow, put up the $600,000 homestead for sale by owner. The will was finally found! Miracles happen! As does greedy, know it all grand kids!
Anyway, I hope all of you with grandchildren have the ones that grow up to be self-sufficient and independent. And who love and respect their grandparents, and take no notice of how much they will inherit some day.

35 years ago, Gordon Gekko delivered his notorious "Greed is Good" speech in "Wall Street".
Sadly, we've made greed a goal, not one of the 7 deadly sins.
We've arrived at summer steam bath with pm showers most days last week and next week. I've got the bulk of the mowing and weedeating done, but it won't be long before it's time to start over again. I bought an oil filter for the tractor ($18?) and plan to change the oil sometime this week. Fortunately, I bought some good oil cheap at Trade Day.

Dear One mowed 4 days this week. Tough going, high grass, too long since the last cut due to rain and mud from a really bad storm. It is comfortable temp-wise until 11 am, then hot as hell, then it cools down around 6 pm. About the time to get out and mow, of course, it will rain, cause a delay, growth spurt for the grass, so yet another tough slog.
We need to move some dirt and some fallen trees, and thought about buying a mini-track loader that a local was selling. It was brand new, and being priced at $1500 lower than at a a retail store. But, it is a Chinese brand. What do we do when we need parts for repairs?
oil filter inflation? Get this shit: The printer ink I shopped for is no longer $79.00. It is $179.00.
Greed is good is normalized for the younger generations. The conversation I had on the phone with the step-grand daughter was very hostile and it is a good thing for her it was a phone call and not in person. Our society is growing more sadistic and primitive by the day.
I did buy shoes this week. Most shoes sold in the US are made in China. Stock up while you can, friends!

no grandkids either. Hav a couple of nephews and they're cool, so there ya go.
Russia's "timid" response is no surprise. They are not terrorists and don't want to be, that is the Ukie gameplan, but not theirs. Hence they target military targets and dual use ones, both of which the Ukies try to hide, if feasible, locate in civilian areas where feasible and all like that. The Ukies rely upon that reluctance of the Rus to strike non-military targets a lot. Also, the Rus know history and have memory, unlike the uklies. The Rus originated up around Novgorod, pretty much founded Kiev and all like that. Catherine the great give the Jews permission to live in Kiev, while Ukliestan's national hero, Stepan Bandera, the uber nazi, wanted them all exterminated. The Rus know that Ukiestan, especially its eastern area, is full of Rus and or parrt Rus peoples, so they need to destroy as little cvivilian infrastructure and housing as possible while trying to destroy the Ukie's war making capability.

I, too, and childless and grand childless. Thank goodness. I have been asked by several of my nieces if they could get a look at my will. Hell, even my brother did! I change it immediately after the inquiries.
Money is no longer a goal for comfort and security. It is now for the goal of empowerment. The brag, the high self-esteem, the joy of humiliating the lessers.
Russia knows it is NATO trying to escalate the war, and he is not easy to goad.
I admire him for his restraint, common sense, and the profound care taken by Russian forces to spare Ukie civilians.
Gonna shop this afternoon, knowing the higher prices today will be higher next week. Nothing functions with the skill and perfection of inflation, dear friend!
