MAHA is a joke

The Trump Administration began restricting health care access for Americans on Day 1.

Within his first 48 hours back in office, Trump has signed several executive orders that threaten the healthcare of millions of Americans.

Amid a flurry of executive orders, some of which were signed live on TV on inauguration night, the US president issued several orders that repeal Biden-era directives that had expanded healthcare access and options for lower-income and middle-class Americans.

Those orders are expected to affect the medical insurance coverage for upwards of 20 million people in the US.

But none of this compares to what the GOP is about to do with Medicaid.

House Republicans have unveiled the cost-saving centerpiece of President Donald Trump's “big, beautiful bill,” at least $880 billion in cuts largely to Medicaid to help cover the cost of $4.5 trillion in tax breaks....
A preliminary estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the proposals would reduce the number of people with health care by 8.6 million over the decade.
...
The primary result is health care coverage being taken away from eligible Americans.
We know this because nearly everyone on Medicaid who can work already is. We also know this because states like Georgia and Arkansas have experimented with work requirements to disastrous results. In the latter state, for example, some 18,000 Arkansans lost coverage, even though researchers found “nearly everyone targeted by the policy already met the requirements.”

The idea that you can take away health care from millions, maybe tens of millions of Americans, and people are going to get healthier, is illogical.
And then came DOGE.

But even as he extols MAHA, Trump has unleashed a slew of policies likely to make Americans less healthy. He’s slashing 20,000 full time positions from HHS and cutting more than $4 billion in indirect costs related to health research grants, including studies into treatment for Alzheimer’s and cancer. He also supported a GOP plan likely to kneecap Medicaid, a joint federal-state program that covers about 72 million Americans.

The contradictions raise doubts about the sincerity of Trump’s support for the MAHA agenda and his administration’s commitment to making a dent in chronic disease — conditions that afflict about 133 million Americans and account for roughly 90% of the $4.5 trillion spent annually in the U.S. on health care.

Lastly, let's not forget what hunger does to people's health.

House Republicans made their priorities apparent in their recent proposal, released by the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture, to enact the largest Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cut in history. The package aims to cut $290 billion (nearly 30 percent) from SNAP, largely by shifting benefit costs to states for the first time, linking this new cost-sharing formula to state error rates. The package would also expand burdensome paperwork requirements to older Americans and families with children and freeze future benefit increases that would help households adjust to rising food costs.

arena. It is not uncommon for them to be on separate paths. An Agency needs to adjust its management practices to meet its stated and unstated objectives, irregardless of funding levels.

Ironically many of the practices on an individual level for MAHA do not require Federal or State dollars, regulations or mandates. Simple understanding of what we ingest, breath or inject has the potential to effect our health. Take steps to create a knowledge baseline for research on personal choices to be useful. Discipline to follow through on your choices. Awareness body and circumstances change so periodic monitoring and perhaps adjustments are normal. I have never seen such a high level of awareness our societal norms and business practices could be contributing to individual and community health problems. MAHA seems to be having an impact.

If the intent of the diary is to create general outrage in the reader - good diary. If the intent is to illicit changes in the system - show lack of understanding of being able to identify places to effectively effect outcomes.

@studentofearth I am very angry that tens of millions of people with be caused to suffer, and probably tens of thousands will die. I would prefer that people here be angry about that too, but that isn't going to happen. In fact, the only anger that happens on C99P is toward me, for the crime of talking about these things.
As for the politics of funding, do you really think that any of this will change without popular anger?

@gjohnsit around the source - collateral damage can be significant. Not angry with your messages, but am resistant to adding to unfocused anger to my life and then passing anger forward. In the past concerned citizens and lobbying coalitions contacting elected officials have aborted or minimized cuts to the systems. I have not noticed direct changes in past proposed legislative funding reductions by yelling, ranting, violence or mass demonstrations.

Anger can be focused into resolve to act on steps to address a challenge at multiple levels.

Let's take food security at a couple of individual examples. Since COVID lock downs have done the shopping for some food stamp recipients who were health challenged. They had been running short at the end of each month. A mixture of education, wise purchases and diet changes they now have a three month supply of food reserves. It provides a buffer for food price increases or decrease in assistance.

Second example, I gave a couple of chestnut tree saplings to an acquaintance to add to her beginning orchard. They should grow as the family grows and begin adding a new food source in a few years.

Access to medical care - as time goes by my feelings are mixed - because our society is loosing ground on the problem of health care induced death. Recognized as a national problem in 1999 with the publication To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System.

A recent two-fold increase in medical adverse event deaths among US inpatients Nov 24, 2022

Medical adverse events (MAEs) are defined as unintentional harm caused by medical management.1,2 Fatal and non-fatal MAEs have high incidence globally.3 In the US, the number of fatal MAEs is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands annually, and the numbers of non-fatal MAEs are even higher.4 It is therefore crucial that further resources will be directed to the prevention of MAEs and death from medical care.4–8

@gjohnsit @gjohnsit belief at a young age rants have no impact on the major issues facing society. They provide temporary emotional release for the Ranter, self destruction catches up with them eventually. (Description at link a good summary of the movie)

edited to add.
I maintain a steady supply of Bullshit to feed the plants and microbes in the soil. Only requires pasture rotation for self distribution or a shovel for the garden.

@studentofearth Actually, a recent Johns Hopkins study posited that medical error was the third leading cause of death in the US - behind heart disease and cancer: https://hub.jhu.edu/2016/05/03/medical-errors-third-leading-cause-of-death/ We have by far the most expensive medical system per citizen of any industrialized nation and among the worst outcomes. Put simply, unhealthy citizens are much more profitable to the HIC (Healthcare Industrial Complex) than healthy citizens and cures.
