Friday Night Photos Auto Art: Lowrider Edition
Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.
On the first weekend of this month I went to the Goodguys hot rod and custom car show at the Del Mar fairgrounds. This was the 24th year for the event and my 6th or 7th time attending. This year there was a noticeable drop in the number of cars and spectators. I don't know if the ailing economy had anything to do with it or if it was just an off year. Whatever the reason, there was still a large variety of beautiful cars and works of auto art. In tonight's FNP I highlight the Lowriders.
(NOTE: do to the decrease in the number of cars, some of these images are from 2022)

Ahh, you smokin' style cat
Never really understood that low rider scene
until one very odd night in So. Cal
and it was literally streaming live.
Oh, that's what is about. Chopping the Detroit
metal monsters down to street level.
Sparks were flying!

Hi, Q
With modern technology no chopping is needed. Ride height is controlled by hydraulics. You can raise and lower the suspension with the flip of a switch.

I was wondering if they were still functional
Thanks for explaining how. Do you ever see any on the roads?
I have not seen any on the streets
but they do have cruise nights in various locations around the county during the summer where you can see them out on the streets.

@Socialprogressive Not sure if it's

Throwing sparks
off of the undercarriage of the car? Hell, in Colorado, we can do that with our Jeeps and jacked-up pickemuptrucks. We call those frost heaves, and potholes, and Gawd’s answer to TABOR. Admittedly, we can’t compete with the paint jobs and all that, but by Gawd we can make sparks. Had a friend with an Audi Fox *endo* the thing hitting a slush-filled pothole on I-70 a few years back. Totaled the car, and he still limps a bit.
Oh, they do it voluntarily? Never mind. Carry on…

That's a very funny description
of how lowriding would go on current road conditions. I hope your friend thought it was worth it.
It is a great
drinking story, especially when he gets to the part about getting hit by the snowplow while hanging upside down in the seatbelt. Bets are usually placed shortly afterwards, which are always concluded by him producing the photos on his phone. For locals, it was over by the puppy food plant. You know when.
Lowriders were such a SoCal thing. Where we lived on the peninsula, there were shops that would do the work- but the cruising culture never really had its day, that far north. San Jose, maybe- but you get north of maybe Santa Clara, and no way Jose… (;-)

I guess the limp is proof enough
What is it about the puppy food plant and when???
On I-70 through Denver,
there is a spot close to the old stockyards (now referred to as the Stock Show complex, among a lot of other names) where the Purina/Manna Pro Corporation converts raw protein into dog food. It has, shall we say, a unique bouquet. Do not ask where the protein came from.
It is better in the winter.
Anyway, a couple of years age the I-70 elevated structure through that area decided to become I-93 in Boston, and a couple of potholes opened up and ate a few cars. And the rest, I suppose, is just history repeating itself. Funny how that happens.

The bouquet
must be becoming quite fragrant around now ; ).
Still trying to figure out the relationship to Boston.
It has become a common problem
in snowy cities that have elevated highways- the road salt that is put down all winter eventually attacks the rebar in the structure, which swells as it corrodes. This swelling causes the concrete to weaken and eventually spall off, and the resulting potholes worsen rapidly. They can get bad enough for the road deck to fail entirely, and the pothole can become a window through to the ground below. Sometimes, the hole can enlarge to the point that vehicles can actually fall through.
I use the example of the Southeast Distressway in Boston because of its notoriety for that. When a large chunk of it was finally torn down as part of the Big Dig, a collective sigh of relief went up. Anyway, the elevated part of I-70 here ie experiencing the same deterioration, with the same same general result. I just use it as my example, since I got to live through it, back in the day…

During the 70's
I remember San Jose being mostly muscle cars, but you would see the occasional lowrider on cruise nights.

San Diego's not without it's potholes
Thankfully I have not encountered any that would turn my car into an impromptu lowrider throwing sparks.

Hi Social
What incredible designing talent went into those creations. I can hardly imagine there were such beautiful bumpers and wheels. I've never seen that before. That 'Tipsy' photo and display is far out! Thanks for capturing the cars in all their almost other-worldly beauty.
They truly are works of art
My guess is 'Tipsy' is purely a show car and never driven on the street. Many of the custom cars at the show look like they've never been on the road.

@janis b Hi Janis,

Hi d!
Roasted chestnuts, squirrels don't know what they're missing ; ).
How are your eyes doing?
Hi, janis
QMS see's a shrimp in the chestnut. I see a different seafood. I see an oyster. Love the contrasting colors and textures in the algae and sandstone shot.

Thanks Social
That doesn't sound like a bad combination either. Maybe with a sprinkle of ponzu sauce?
Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Great photos of beautiful automobiles. Growing up in LA and Orange Co., Chevy chorts were all over the place. Low riders were part of the culture. Sometimes there were surfer vs. low rider fights. Fortunately I was neither. I kinda like mint stock vehicles better, but that is just me. My brother should have kept that 63 Impala...
Thanks for the OT and great pics!
happy trails!

Hi, dystopian
I think we all have a car we wished we kept. For me it was a 67 mustang I used to have.

How low can you go?
Plenty of lowriders around here back in the day.
Now I sweat that dimension and gravity. its not easy getting in or out of some cars.
Hardest car for me to get into was a 62 Consul Capri.
Absolute challenge, no boots allowed.
Then a 56 Tbird showed me real misery.
Why anyone would want to drop their rockers on the ground eludes me,
unless its contempt for authority.
Nobody is going to confuse me for an NBA player
so getting in and out of a vehicle that is low to the ground isn't a problem for me.
One nice thing about a lowrider with hydraulic suspension is you can raise or lower the height to wherever you need it to make it easy to get in and out.

I'm getting spoiled by the improving
quality of the visual images on here each week. Sp, I never was a car freak but those restored wheelie oldies are ABFAB! The dead couple is my favorite; the hair curlers nearly had me choking with the laffs.
Q's entry isn't too shabby, either. The rear end looks like some sort of demon with those rear lights. LOL.
Speaking of low riders...
Rec'd!!
