Not a big splash.
I'm trying to figure out what the purpose of the all female suborbital space shot was all about.
They had no control and were just passengers in an automatous rocket that basically went up and came back down.
What message were we regular people to take from this? That we could experience weightlessness if we should endeavor to become rich and/or famous?
Was this purely an exercise in PR to drum up space tourism to make a very wealthy individual even more wealthy?
When will your local travel agent be able to book you and your book club an 11 minute flight?
And at what costs?
I just read a piece saying a week at Disney world will set you back 8 to 15 thousand dollars per couple.
And there are people doing round the world cruises for less than 100k.
Could this be the market Bezos is going for?
I'm glad everything went well and no one got hurt and they all made it back alive.
But frankly, the best moment for me was when Bezos, giddy with excitement, tripped and faceplanted along side the capsule trying to peek inside the windows at the landing site.
Other than that, just meh.
Have seven days of no rain and moderate temps in the 70s coming, so I'm a plantin' like crazy right now.

in a can, if "The Right Stuff" is to be believed. Apparently, Chuck Yeager really did say it...
But hey, if you have the cash, why not? Might as well flaunt it- people aren't in the street with pitchforks and torches, just yet. Party like it's 1999.
I just saw that the Chinese government has quietly told all their air carriers to cancel their Boeing orders, and moreover to stop buying replacement/service parts for the ones they already have. ~240 aircraft on order at ~$100 million a pop, and that's $24 *billion* wiped off the books at Boeing, all at once.
https://archive.ph/3b3Wj
Once again, I'm really glad that I don't work for Boeing. The upcoming bailout isn't going to make them very popular. And if the other international customers also look at the new tariffs and decide to go Airbus (or COMAC, the Chinese regional jet manufacturer), they could be in for a much *bigger* world of hurt.

I'm fairly certain there will be no further frosts here in the Portland/Vancouver metro area.
I do keep some plastic covers handy though.
China is still flush with American dollars and they are spending it down as fast as they can.
The tariffs will help to not accumulate any more.
Thanks for the post.

I heard that Trump awarded the military contract
....for 6th generation fighter jets .... to Boeing. Does this sound right to you?
It sounds
utterly predictable.
That came out a couple of weeks ago, prior to the tariff thing. This just tells me that each of those 6th or whatever generation Boeing fighters will have really, really big price tags, will be years late, and since it will be a Swiss Army knife designed by committee, it probably won't work very well (see the F-35 for a shining example of that). But they'll make the ex-McDonnell-Douglas MBAs who now run Boeing very happy- no doubt lots of new houses and yachts are being purchased there, even as Boeing's commercial aircraft business circles the drain...
It is sad that Boeing swallowed so many other solid companies (like North American Rockwell) on their way to achieving financial glory and engineering incompetence at the hands of the McDonnell-Douglas management they "acquired" during that merger. It has been accurately described as "McD-D buying Boeing with Boeing's own money". Now, basically, the realistic choices are Boeing and Lockheed-Martin, and I suppose that it is now "Boeing's turn" after LockMart's Fat Amy (the F-35) won the last round over LockMart's own F-22 and Northrop's F-23...

Airbus...
I bet.

HI all
Hi E1,
I would sure like to see the highlight reel, in slo-mo, of the faceplant! That does sound
exciting.
What was a) the cost? and b) the carbon footprint?
For what?
I was glad to see NASA and the space force a couple years ago redefined 'astronaut' for the purpose of earning your wings. It is someone who participated in a mission critical manner in making the mission happen. Space tourists for a couple minutes are not astronauts.
The media, Bezos and his team can't call these amusement park riders astronauts enough. It is to me sickening. It devalues every astronaut on earth. Who do these egos think they are?
The whole thing is a vanity project to serve the vain. So they can have their fun while the world crumbles. It is more fun the solving real world problems.
happy trails all!
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

I think it was Bezos
putting on his salesman hat.
I mean, isn't this whole venture of his "flying penis" developed specifically for space tourism?

Heh, good morning e1. The purpose(s) and effect(s) can
be different things. The real purpose, I'm sure, was PR for Bezos and his projects, maybe some PR for some of the people involved and their careers, and then thrills, experience and "been there & done that" checklists for the passengers.
No science was done and nothing new was learned, but that's not what it was all about. However, there is a likely cultural impact, especially on today's kids, that a group of women can joyride into space just like rich guys have been doing. Women are, after all, still a minority in space, both as crew/astronauts and as tourists.

On another note: My news crawl says that Trump is going to back off of automobile sanctions. Predictable.
The fact is American consumers desperately need to drive advanced EVs (imports) that they can buy at very low cost. For their own economic well being, US commuters need precision-built SUVs, with advanced batteries that can travel 500 miles on a five minute charge. Only a robot-based factory can produce vehicles like these at the right price. US auto makers know they will never produce EVs like these in the US — and failure to have them available in a nation with no modern infrastructure will doom the US economy.
I'm guessing US automakers, themselves, convinced Trump that it would be the ultimate fatal wound to the United States, if modern EV transportation were withheld from the American people. This is a known-known in the world, except in the US.
The fact that China's response to US 100+ percent tariffs on Chinese vehicles — resulted in China banning sales of airplane and automotive replacement parts to the US — might have been a factor in this decision.
I bet that this won't stop the companies from raising prices
to pad their bottom lines.
