Saturday Open Thread - 1/25/25: Odds and Ends
I am not a fan of cops, but occasionally run across one that is truly intent on keeping the peace and protecting the public. In my life, I have made good friends with 13 or so, one being an FBI agent.
A hundred, give or take, have been psychopaths, dangerous, and true criminals.
Last election, a constable in the county defeated the sitting sheriff in the primary. The sheriff demanded a recount, and he lost votes. He filed a lawsuit claiming voter fraud, but the case was thrown out.
I could not campaign for the sheriff's opponent, a long time friend. In fact, he was concerned about coming to my office because when he did, a deputy would pull up beside my office a sit for a couple of hours. My friend, a constable, and now, sheriff, has hired me to do wills, deeds, represent his step daughter in a divorce, help his wife form a charity for dog rescue, and on, and on, and on.
The new sheriff swore in, more than half of the deputies quit. They tossed the car keys in a barrel. New sheriff had to match 30 keys to 30 cars, id labels peeled off. He is still hiring new deputies.
Audits showed the Sheriff's office paid an IT guy to take care of 71 computers. Well, there were only 56 Sheriff's Office computers. I wonder where they went. All log ins, codes, data, had been shredded, so they were of no use. Public suddenly unsafe, no concern to psychopath! Public safety be damned!
The Big Cold is over. My utility bills will be high, but less than hiring a plumber to fix the mess of burst pipes.
It's the little things in life.

My secretary took her kids to a mountain lodge in Arkansas last weekend. They made a snow dog, sent me a picture. Not as elaborate as the Cajun snow fish, but pretty cute for kids that have seen snow maybe twice in their lives.
Are you as unexcited about Hegseth being confirmed as sec. of defense as I?
He will be judged as good or bad by the weapons manufacturers, as is the American way. My opinion matters not at all.

It is predicted that we will have rain for the next 6 days, so grocery shopping is today, or carry in drenched grocery bags. It is warmer, at least. I can put away my parka and flannel jeans.
The sheriff hated to lose a job that paid $80,000 a year, but was enough for him to buy a million dollar airplane. Oh, and to take confiscated money from the evidence room to gamble in Las Vegas.
His deputies loved him. His directive to them was "You can do anything you want." It was common for a grandma to get beaten and arrested for a broken tail light.
I am representing the new sheriff in a small claims squabble over ownership of a damn dog. Unbelievable. Of course, the person that sued him was a staunch supported of the former sheriff. I want it dismissed, do not want a room full of press reporters.

The compromise was good advice to the child.
Ironically the compromise does forces one to better understand almost any subject matter to explain it well without the specialized language which develops within any tight knowledge base.
Sometimes individuals are not ready to expand their awareness. They need extra time to prepare themselves for the additional uncertainty which comes with some types of knowledge and life changes that are necessary after some types of increased awareness. Others need to learn by experiences both positive and negative consequences. Rushing another too fast can create its own set of problems.
Still yourself, deep water can absorb many disturbances with minimal reaction.

This is happening in Moss Landing, at the center-point of Monterey Bay, in California. I gather the scene is so poisonous they can't put the fire out. So they're just letting it burn itself out.
The ruling classes need an extra party to make the rest of us feel as if we participate in democracy. That's what the Democrats are for. They make the US more durable than the Soviet Union was.

As I watched it, I compared an 18 wheeler accident in the county that released chemicals, HC? HD? At any rate, hazmat teams from 5 counties were here within 90 minutes, a complete evacuation for a 4 mile radius, an entire school bus of kids sent immediately to a hospital, and roads blocked off.
Sadly, within that danger zone there is a huge dog rescue facility, cattle ranches, horse farms, hay fields, and vegetable gardens. The county judge called me and said to avoid the area for at least a few days. Maybe they will do soil and water testing. We take our agriculture seriously.

on how many videos I have watched where the invasion had the full support of the cops. No telling how many FBI agents (provocateurs) were encouraging the crowd to get rowdy.
All protesters who do not commit a crime should not be arrested in any protest against anybody. That includes J6 protesters.

I’ve watched a lot of videos on the Ukraine war, but they are usually one sided. I found this video very informative because it shows the best and the worst of both armies.
It starts out with how Ukraine sent their marines into actual meat grinders for no gain and lots of losses.

In some ways Norman Finkelstein reminds me of Howard Zinn. Even though Finkelstein is no longer formally teaching at a university, he is still a teacher. Their personalities and presentation are quite different, but they seem to aspire to similar pursuits from a common understanding, though Finkelstein comes from a different time in the life of America. I’d love to hear Zinn’s thoughts on the current state of america and the world.
I am actually new to Finkelstein.
It will take me a while to do the comparison to Zinn. He just strikes me as accurate, for want of a better word.
