Shuttering the town

open thread_155.jpg
Another business closed their doors today. Craft Warehouse in the neighborhood shopping center is no more.
I can't say I shop there a lot, but e2 does often.
The Right Aid drug store across the street went bellyup last summer and our local Safeway closed last month.
Auto parts chain Advance Auto Parts closes this week, as does Leif's Auto Body that served the region for decades.
The news today informs that the last two Macy's in the region will be closing soon. Subway has already culled many shops in the metro area and Big Lots is no more.
These are the big businesses that create a lot of tax revenue and jobs that support the local economy.
Add in numerous small businesses such as restaurants and boutiques boarding up, it's starting to look like a recession.
I haven't seen it this bad since the Great Bush Recession of 2008.
Now I see Amazon is selling new cars online. Is this the future? Will there be no more dealerships?
Well, at least we are getting our first In-n-Out up in Ridgecrest.
I'm sure it will do fine.
Thread is open.

Is her brain having problems remembering whose husband decided to offshore factories and jobs to China?

I’m so ever grateful that she never became president!

@snoopydawg First Lady for 8 years than Sec of State for another 8...do you think she was content to say "yes, dear" or "yes, Mr. President" (especially in the latter case)? She is to Miss Piggy what Zapp Brannigan is to James T. Kirk.

The position of President's spouse is such an incredible loophole in the Constitution; imagine if Carville or Matalin ran for President!?

Nice catch.

@snoopydawg I didn't know we were endangered by China. I didn't know we were in conflict with China. When did they become our enemy? When did having the world's greatest economy mean we are also safe and secure? I just never thought of the financial well-being of the oligarchs as the measure of our security as a nation. Those rich fucks could pack up and move today, still be wealthy.

And I seem to remember that China willingly sent us billions of masks when we asked them to.

But it’s been well over a quarter of a century since her husband destroyed manufacturing in America so why is she just talking about now?

Biden put more ungawdly sanctions on Russia and still Russia is selling us oil as well as Europe. Good gawd dude grow some balls and fight back. I just don’t get the gentlemen’s rules for war when only one side adheres to them. Turning the other cheek over and over will only get you a broken jaw and a caved in head.

ghost town resident to another!
We have a Big Lots closure 30 miles away. Auto parts store closed about 2021. A body shop closed last year. A restaurant, 2 resale stores, one gift shop, an entire shopping mall 15 miles away, all within the last year or so.The lumber yard is about to close.
The 2 new businesses that sprang up were U-Hauls rentals. People getting the hell out of Dodge?
When we head to the Hill Country, we go through historic towns that are now blocks of shuttered windows and doors. Still, real estate prices are still very inflated. Rent is very high. Toll roads everywhere.
I swear, we are looking like a 3rd world country.
I hope you can catch a close out deal from Big Lots!
Thanks for the OT.

It's the biggest mall in the region.
U-haul thriving..... that's funny!
But where would people go?
I'd have thought a small rural town like yours would be the destination.
Thanks for stopping by.

@earthling1 who have lived her forever, and who are dying out, we do not have any large-scale employers. The biggest business with the largest number of employees is the grocery store.
The government jobs are fairly numerous.
We attract poor people who can afford property in a flood zone. Otherwise, it attracts rich retirees who buy a ranch, or buy a lake shore mansion.
I am told there are plans to build a couple of fancy apartment complexes, but I expect they will be filled by school district employees. I also hear we are building a new school building.
I guess Amazon is going to swamp everything in due time.

Damn good questions. I have been asking the same ones.

https://www.kunstler.com/p/climate-jeezus-taketh-away

you must wonder what is happening to those tens of thousands of displaced persons and families right now? How many of them are sleeping out on their smoldering properties, or in their cars, or just shivering on a sidewalk somewhere. It does not seem possible that they all found a place to go, certainly not at their neighbors’ houses, who were all burnt-out, too. . . and there are just so many hotel rooms not occupied by “the undocumented.” Anyway, how many families can stay in hotel rooms that go for $1,000-a-night, and for how many nights? How many of them lost absolutely everything, including the possibility of a future? Which gets you to the realization that we have barely begun to see the knock-on effects of this catastrophe. Those tens of thousands of the burnt-out will not be reporting to work anytime soon.

They will have all they can do to find a roof over their heads while they hassle with FEMA officials, State of California bureaucrats, insurance company claims agents, and other “helpers.” The rebuilding quandaries have already been rehearsed in the news. Even if politicians suspended all the building and zoning codes, and the tax issues, where will so many contractors come from in any reasonable time-frame? And where do you put all that melted plastic goop and toxic ash that remains on-the-ground where peoples’ lives used to be? If you lost a house valued at $5-million, it will cost you at least $10-million to replace it. Good luck, even if you were a mid-level movie star. Of course, if your insurance got cancelled lately — or you just didn’t have any because it cost too much — then there is zero chance you will get to even fantasize about living in the hills above Malibu ever again. And that job you’re not able to go to right now due to the pressing needs of sheer survival on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. . . you might never go to that job again. The business you worked for might not be there anymore, either.

I read this morning that Biden is giving fire victims a one time payment of $770.
And just as the fires in California started the people affected by the hurricane were told that they would receive no more money for hotels and such.

In between that time Biden has sent about $20 billion to Ukraine and Israel. But right after the hurricane he was also sending billions to both countries.

Yeah we should be livid, but even if we are what can we do about this bullcrap?

Republicans are going to cut $7 trillion from the budget by cutting taxes, Medicaid and Medicare. I don’t think it’s a great idea to have billionaires deciding what we can spend our money on.

Sounds like it's turning into one of those places where one has to travel 50 miles for anything or else order it from Sears Amazon or other source and get it delivered by UPS of FedEx. I lived in one once for a while, it did have a small country store, but the big brown truck came flying through on a daily basis all the same.

There's no real industry here, in that respect it is a bedroom community, with some small and midsize retail, some boutique shops and a lot of restaurants and take=out joints. It loses somebusinesses now and then, but mostly for reasons. It had a Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens for about 27000 people, so clearly at least one had to go and it was Rite Aid, stuff like that. That was a while back, population is now 65K, about 1/3 to 1/2 infill and the rest expansion.

Nuthin much to say about anything today, daffs are blooming, which is nice.

We've got several Fedx/UPS/Amazon running up and down the block day & night.
Main street was crushed by Walmart years ago. Now it's Walmart's number that is up, by Amazon.
I think all the big box stores will get eaten up.

My area is the opposite. I'm in the fastest growing county in Florida. A lot of people are moving here because it is (was) a little less expensive. But the growth is in people and not anything else. There are no good restaurants, mostly just fast-food places, no large businesses to employ people, and the infrastructure is 20 years behind.

I actually went to Big Lots yesterday in the next county. There really weren't that many good deals going on. The sign said, "up to 30% off." The food was "our everyday low price, and most of the items were only 10% off.

Link to post from two months ago

In West Hollywood, the signs are mixed -- a huge number of empty storefronts along Santa Monica and Melrose Blvds. Two legal marijuana shops have opened and closed within a few weeks in one case and a few months in the other. The cops have rousted just about all the folks who were sleeping on the sidewalks. I witnessed a couple of the police actions as they patiently goaded the street dwellers into moving on. To where? Who knows?

Meanwhile, major construction of retail properties is accelerating, including two huge lots at major intersections that have been fenced off for the last few years. Several retail properties in my neighborhood are also being refurbished under new names.

It appears that there is a lack of customers with spendable cash coupled with a surplus of available credit. Intentional economic suicide

If this thing brewing is not intentional (as I believe it is), then we are bring led by morons.

The galloping inflation of the last four years is the inevitable result of the covid lockdown and mandatory cessation of huge amounts of productive activity coupled with the unbalanced "stimulus" measures that delivered huge amounts of fiat money, much of which went into the financial markets.

During the farcical Presidential campaign, both parties offered bogus explanations for the inflation. Team Trump simply repeated the GOP mantra of the last century -- rising prices are caused by "reckless spending" by "liberals" in power. Harris offered to take action against "price gouging" by Big Business.

The tacit agreement to avoid rehashing covid tells the story, as far as I am concerned. The pretend war between the Dems and the GOP is staged to keep any opposition to the permanent government from having a single target.

This continues to work like a dream for the moneybags.

@earthling1 is the King of Kayfabe.

I actually enjoy seeing him now claiming to bring an end to the Ukraine War. He will order Putin and the flakey boss of Ukraine to make a deal. That way he can keep his bloodthirsty supporters and donors happy to imagine that his "toughness" is working miracles on the world stage.

Time will tell if the Permanent Government insists on slaughtering more hapless Ukie draftees or if my cynicism is accurate and they really do not want to blow up the world -- just to scare the shit out of everybody on earth.
