Travelin' light

Good morning everyone.
A fine, foggy, frigid morning here in the high 30s, but no rain or snow. Still sans a heater, so stokin' the fire is the first chore. Then start the coffee a-perkin'.
Went down to the waterfront last night to watch the Christmas boats parade up and down the Columbia in all their lighting and glory. I know the yachties and blow boaters really enjoy this annual ritual, there were dozens of them, but with the cost of fuel these days it's got to be pretty expensive.
But I and crowds of others sure appreciate the dazzling display of lights on the water.
It was cold but we were bundled up well and had a nice hot thermos of hot chocolate.
The Syrian debacle continues to shake out and it looks like the Russian bases there will remain. It's hard to tell who the winners and losers are with so many factions in the country and stirrers outside.
This is going to take awhile.
So lets just sit back and relax, the threat of Armageddon is lessoning as the evangelicals are busy getting all showered and dressed up for the big event.
I wonder, do they pack a bugout bag for this? Will they take their C-PAP with them? Their Magic Kingdom Card?
Naw, I've never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul.

@earthling1 Gosh what memories! Back in the day when we last lived in Austin on a small 8x34 foot houseboat, our marina would have a lighted boat parade. Great fun. After the parade came back to the marina and everyone put out food and we wandered up and down the marina. In the morning one of the big boats cooked us all breakfast tacos! Hope you stayed warm and had a wonderful time.

Sorry for the issues.

Rainy here today so I have time inside. Was dry enough for Trade day this AM but it was empty, although I did buy some avocados.

Hope the tech issues are easy to resolve. Thanks for the OT!

The restoration effort has begun at the wrecked house (again). The weather isn't cooperating because it's very humid, which doesn't help. The reconstruction of the inside walls is reaching a critical stage, and I'm apprehensive about it.

Ms. So's church had to move, basically was forced out by the congregation that owned the former building they used for several years. They wanted more money and imposed unacceptable limitations on use of the building, like the kitchen. A Korean church needs a kitchen. I consider the pastor there a friend, even though I don't go to the services anymore. I used to enjoy them, the social contact with the local community, trying to understand the hymns and homily without using the translation service they have for non-Koreans. I wasn't able to go for a couple of reasons, one of which was smokey's resistance to being left home alone after the first Ian flood.

Some one asked me how's it going yesterday, when I took a walk in the neighborhood w/o smokey of course. I've been better. He said it's all relative my friend and pulled his shirt up to show me either a bullet wound (veteran?) or surgical wound, I wasn't inclined to inspect further. Yes, it can always get worse, that's what I'm finding out in the recent sequence of unlikely happenings. We all have some kind of scars, I think.

I'm glad Ms. So still has an active community around her to lighten her burdens.

Today's South Korean political news is reflected in this screenshot:

Vote today in the National Assembly to appoint a permanent special investigation team to investigate the martial law/ coup attempt by Yoon and company. It's a significant vote for a couple of reasons. First the votes for the legislation exceed the number needed to overcome a veto by Yoon (over 200 out 300 members). According to the report, there were 188 votes from the majority democratic party, the conservative reform party of Lee Jun-seok, the progressive party, etc., for 188 votes. No doubt this would include Cho Guk's small innovation party which typically votes with the democrats. The total vote in favor was 210, so this means 22 assembly members from the minority ruling PPP nominally Yoon and Han's party (the US and Japan favored party) voted for an independent special investigation of the coup attempt. (There were 14 abstentions).

The three parallel investigations already ongoing right now, are effectively controlled by the executive office, Yoon and Han. The prosecutors because of their past and current relationships with Yoon and Han, have obvious conflicts of interest. This has been the problem with prosecution reform and Yoon's administration all along. Their dictatorial control of the national prosecution service. All prior special investigation bills to get around their vise like control of the prosecution service passed by the assembly were previously vetoed by Yoon.

The second implication of the 22 defections from the president's party, is that it suggests that perhaps a larger number of defections from the president's erstwhile supporters will allow a 2/3 vote to impeach Yoon in the near future.

Thanks for the OT Earthling1.

I hope that's enforced.

Haven't heard anything about Kim Kon-hee, the First Lady. I haven't seen anything reported that indicates she was involved in the coup attempt (yet). I think she potentially could be given a no-exit order on the basis of the Myung Tae-kyun scandal which was in the news lately before this coup thing came up. She had refused an appearance before a legislative inquiry into the matter. This is where she and Yoon allegedly interfered in PPP party nominations in some elections. This is unlawful in South Korea. The president is not supposed to direct the party on electoral matters.

I thought the raids on Korean Election Commission offices by special forces at the very outset of the coup attempt may have been related to the Myung Tae-kyun scandal. I'm not inclined to believe that now. Allegedly, Yoon was planning to impugn past general election results in which the Democratic Party gained a strong majority in the National Assembly, in order to declare their control of the assembly invalid, and call for new elections.

This is from TK of The Blue Roof, a respected Korean-American analyst of Korean affairs:

After the Democratic Party won a massive victory in the General Election 총선 this past April, right-wing YouTubers were quick to resort to election denial. Pastor Jeon Gwang-hun 전광훈, notorious for holding weekly far-right rallies in downtown Seoul, has long maintained that the poll workers at the NEC manipulated the electronic vote-counting system to manufacture a liberal victory. Assisting this supposed election fraud was Kim Eo-jun’s polling company, Flower Research 여론조사 꽃, which produced rigged survey results that primed the public to accept the election results. After Yoon’s declaration of martial law, Jeon claimed: “We kept arguing election fraud, and even told Yoon we would withdraw our support unless he investigated it. That’s how we got martial law.”

It is gonna get near freezing here for a couple of days, then warm up to 89 deg. this weekend. Quite a temperature swing.
I have been reading up on the CEO murder case. The perp made it so easy to get caught, he should have just turned himself in, but there is no distraction in that.
Israel's continuing genocide and theft of territories in Syria and Lebanon can fade from view while we get excited about a hand written manifesto. Trump ordering Putin around is also news for another day.
Call me cynical or a conspiracy theorist, but at the same time, a defense attorney in 17 murder cases, but I do not believe Mangione is the shooter.
Every detail is starting to look manufactured.
Oh, well, I have a boring afternoon in probate court, hope there will be no shootings. Probate is the most likely body of law to put parties and court personnel in danger. People who get cut out of the will get revenge.
Enjoy your day by the fire, friend!

@on the cusp One person pointed out that of the two pictures taken before the shooting, the shooter was wearing a light then black backpack. Some discussion in gun community about the jamming gun. Best explanation is that the suppressor was homemade but lacked some spring mechanism to force back the slide of the pistol. So the slide had to be manual racked back on each shot. But does this guy seem like somebody to make his own suppressor?

Maybe one of the most curious is how the shooter showed up in front of the hotel just when the CEO was walking by.

And really, Luigi was hanging out at a McDonalds when he had a head start in fleeing NYC.

Yeah I think that’s the issue. People are paying for healthcare, but they are being denied it.

Water heater died late yesterday, 50 gallon that sits on a pedestal so we had somebody do it for us - showed up at about 8-ish and pretty much just left, which blows up the morning, especially the chores that involve water. Now to play ketchup.

Syria has fallen, but the question is "Is it gone?", or will there be some chunk of the globe still bearing that name. Other questions include "how long until Israel eats Lebanon with Syria gone?" Will the US piece become an official US territory, perhaps "U.S. Petrostan" or some such?

El Trumpo, meanwhile, want's a "ceasefire" in Ukiestan, NOT peace, mind you, but a temporary cessation of the Ukie collapse. Does he actually believe that he has some leverage regarding the matter, and how will he abuse it?

Ah well, way behind on today's chores and projects, so

Saw a table put together by Michael Shellenberger where he puts into table form basically the fundamental issues in what he calls woke religion. He summarizes them and gives tabular info and basic causes, etc from the view point of those who believe. You can copy the file and if in windows can convert it to a pdf file for scrolling and zomming.

Now some may disagree with his entries but could be useful. BTW it was Shellenberger who worked with Matt Taibbi on going through Twitter internals on their censorship activities. In Congressional hearings he said he voted for Hillary. He has been active on the anti-censorship side.

is a far left. Lots of writers from the right think that…idjits. The far left died decades ago. Actually it was assassinated by centrist dems. Shitlibs might call themselves liberals, but they don’t have an ounce of far left and what it stands for anymore. I’d call most members here can be considered far left in the definition of what it should be.

Anti war, pro humanity. And no worshipping of Neo Nazis or Zionazis.

My 5 cents.

The House on Dec. 6 passed the Crucial Communism Teaching Act with a vote of 327–62. The bill, introduced by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) and cosponsored by 33 members of the House, seeks to address a gap in the education system related to the history of communism.

“Communism is one of the most destructive political ideologies the world has ever seen,” Rep. Salazar said when reintroducing the bill earlier this year.
“The Crucial Communism Teaching Act is important because our youth must remember the crimes of the communists, including those inflicted upon my constituents and their families in Florida’s 27th district.”

Apparently communism is responsible for 100 million deaths worldwide…I doubt that they want to tell us how many deaths capitalism has caused or including our Russian roulette health care system or our military exceptionalism….or any of the things that happen under it.

And for gawd’s sake why is this important? Bueller?

South Korea police raid President Yoon’s office over martial law declaration

South Korean police have raided the office of President Yoon Suk Yeol over his role in declaring martial law last week – a move that plunged Asia’s fourth-biggest economy into crisis and caused alarm among its allies.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said the search on Wednesday was part of an attempt by law enforcement agencies to establish whether Yoon’s actions, supported by other senior figures in his administration, amounted to insurrection – a crime that does not carry presidential immunity and can carry the death penalty.

A special investigation unit confirmed it raided the presidential office and other agencies. “The special investigation team has conducted a raid on the presidential office, the National Police Agency, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and the National Assembly Security Service,” the unit said in a message sent to Agence France-Presse.

News of the raid came as officials said that Yoon’s former defence minister, Kim Yong-hyun, had attempted suicide while in custody at a detention centre in Seoul, where he had been held since Sunday.

My understanding from more recent broadcast reports, including a YTN "live" report, is that the special investigation team from the National Police is meeting opposition from the presidential security staff. According to them, so far the search team has not been permitted to enter the presidential office building to search. It seems there is some kind of discussion/argument going on. The special investigation team says it cannot enter the secured facility without the consent of the presidential security guard because it is a "secure facility." It sounded as if the presidential office was making a suggestion to "prepare a voluntary submission" of documents. They also seem to be taking the position that under no circumstances will materials from the official residence guard office/ security room be allowed to be searched.
