12/02 Open Thread - International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

Slave Auction Block - Fredericksburg, VA

~~ Slave Auction Block

According to Checkiday.com

More than 40 million people around the world are trapped in modern
slavery, which is usually regarded as forced labor, debt bondage, forced
marriage, and human trafficking. Slavery is a condition where a person
can't leave because of threats, violence, abuse of power, deception, and
coercion. Those most affected by modern slavery are the poorest and
most socially excluded groups, including migrants, women, discriminated
ethnic groups, minorities, and indigenous peoples. Besides the more than
40 million adults in modern slavery, over 150 million children—almost a
tenth of all children—are forced into child labor.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery aims to eradicate
forms of modern slavery-like sexual exploitation, human trafficking,
child labor, forced recruitment of children for armed conflict, and
forced marriage. It is held on December 2nd, the anniversary of the
General Assembly's 1949 adoption of resolution 317(IV),
which is the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the
Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of
Others.

The US Constitution, FWIW, still permits involuntary servitude;

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

California, in 2024 rejected a proposed amendment that would strike similar language from the state Constitution, and I suspect many other states have similar clauses as well.

It seems there has been a series of reports like this recently. They appeared when I searched the title of this Newsweek article. This particular article says the US is "inadvertently involved" in a series of wars. Like s..t happens, you know?

Thanks for the OT Enhydra Lutris.

forever it seems. Angola, oddly enough, is the name of a US prison, possibly a very appropriate place to keep quiet about that pardon.

The rest of the tweet:

emphasized the corruption involving Biden’s family, the Democratic Party, and the Kiev regime. Zakharova criticized the leniency Hunter Biden received, noting that if any other American, even one with substantial financial resources, had committed similar offenses, they would have been imprisoned for many years. She also pointed out that Joe Biden had previously promised not to interfere with the legal process concerning his son, but she believed it was clear he would pardon Hunter regardless.

Zakharova highlighted the corruption that existed between the Biden family, American liberals, and the Kiev regime, suggesting that this network had been operating for years, even under President Obama. She mentioned the large sums of money that flowed through this system, which American justice did not dare to confront.

In his explanation, Joe Biden defended his son’s actions, claiming Hunter was being persecuted solely because of his family ties and that it was part of a broader campaign to undermine the first family of the United States.

AMMAN (Reuters) - Iranian-backed militias entered Syria overnight from Iraq and were heading to northern Syria to beef up beleaguered Syrian army forces battling insurgents, according to two Syrian army sources.

Dozens of Iran-aligned Iraqi Hashd al Shaabi fighters from Iraq also crossed into Syria through a military route near Al Bukamal crossing, a senior Syrian army source told Reuters.

"These are fresh reinforcements being sent to aid our comrades on the front lines in the north," the officer said, adding the militias included Iraq's Katiab Hezbollah and Fatemiyoun groups.

The only good news that I see is that perhaps the Russians will decide to think outside the box and "test" their next non-nuclear MRBM on Tel Aviv, instead of a NATO installation. That'd certainly send a message that might actually soak through into Uncle Joe's pint of tapioca.

Our government is completely out of control, and in 50 days we can expect it to get worse, not better. We useless eaters have very little indeed to look forward to.

This is Monday when most everything turns to shit. My check engine light is on in my SUV. My brake light is on in my sports car. I have never had a mechanical issue on either vehicle. Dammit!
Biden should rot in hell for that blanket pardon of Hunter which is also covering his ass.
Just as you think our standing in the world can't go any lower, it takes another deep dive in world oopinion.
We are such a shitty country, an example of what isn't democracy.
It will get better, eventually, and listening to good music always helps.
Thanks for the OT, dear friend!
