Saturday Open Thread - 10/19/24: Odds and Ends

Well, this hectic week flew by, and once again I am pondering both odds and ends.

I will start with an end, a description of a martyr, provided by Scott Ritter. It is about Sinwar's death and its' significance.

Never give up. Never.

As for odd, I am not responsible for where my ancestors were born. My preference is not to be judged by that, although I am in no position to argue with some religious document or doctrine from long ago, since I never read it. My skin color also resulted from those ancestors. I respect all mutually respectful beliefs. Nobody is better than anyone else in my eyes, heart, and soul. They are the product of ancestors as well.

I like helping neighbors, preserving natural resources and the environment, and all animals contained therein. I despise and do not support any killing beyond self-defense. Aren't those human characteristics?

I only spent one semester at Baylor Baptist University, had to get back home due to illness. I felt well enough one day to sneak off to Sam Houston University and enrolled myself, told my parents that night. I was 16. I was suddenly in the land of hippies. On days when I was too ill do drive, Mom got me to class, as it was only a 30 minute drive. And this song hit the radio when I was 17. I never forgot it, and what it meant my my friends at university, including vets home from Nam. And my parents.

We were too tired to make some Friday Special Dinner, and we happened to have some smoked barbecue beef sandwiches given to us by a friend and neighbor who has a food cart, and is locally renowned.

I actually feel some inner guilt about this, given TPTB are enabling a populations to die of starvation.

Anyways, it is what it is. We can't fix greed, lust for power...yet.

We just need to figure out a plan to achieve the true equality humanity will eventually deserve.

I was front row center for a concert in Houston. He ripped off his 9 high "C's" for me in 1982. This was his launch at the Metropolitan Opera. Interesting commentary and the 4 minute video of the 4 minutes when he became a historical figure.

They didn’t call him the King of the High Cs for nothing…

I have been asked to give a lesson on law to a small group of kids at a private school. Should be tons of fun, as I can break down a legal theory to a 12 year old easily, a 6 year old with a bit of forethought.
It will happen in a couple of weeks, and maybe Dear One will assist with some video odds and ends for the kids.
Meanwhile, as it always happens, my request for your thoughts and concerns is what kicks off the comment thread.

happened to meet JT's brother while exploring Martha's Vineyard mid 70's.
He owned a small grocery store there. Was whistling melodically. Guess it
runs in the family.

@QMS I have a friend who took her Mom on a cruise from Galveston to London. It was more or less a 2 week trip.
The specific trip was booked because JT was the entertainer aboard. They got to meet him and get an autograph.
They were thrilled!
I would have been thrilled, too!

establish a multilateral system of justice, with the teeth to enforce it.

but Israel has told them that they plan to take over their countries and make them part of Israel. It’s doing that to Lebanon now and Jordan is probably next. Then Egypt. Better for them to join up together instead of going one by one.

Great stuff, mon...
We ALL need to know history.
We ALL need to understand that you cannot solve a problem without a clear description of said problem.
For 40 years, I have advised people to accept service from a process server so they can see what the hell lawsuit has been filed against them.
At any rate, the vid was very well done, the issues of history repeating itself was expertly explained.
We need this to know what and who we are up against.

A chilly 43F this AM for Trade Day, but I enjoyed the stroll and visits. Bought two heavy duty buckets for $5. Gas is up a good bit from last week - $2.80/gal. I guess the SW Asia mischief/tension is the cause?

Had a carpenter help me yesterday with some projects I just couldn't handle by myself. Got 'em done, but I was a whooped puppy afterwards.

Still dry here. We got a 0.2" rain so far this Oct. with no more predicted. Hopefully Nov. will turn wet as it usually does. We're watering the garden. We still have sweet potatoes to dig in a couple of weeks.

Well, that's the news from the holler...nothing exciting, but that is probably for the best. Y'all take care and have a great weekend! Thanks for the OT.

Major drama within the Kamala Harris campaign this morning. A source reveals that Harris screamed at and angrily berated her campaign manager Julie Chavez for over 30 minutes on the phone this morning.

The source shares that Chavez advised Kamala not to attend the Al Smith dinner because it could send the wrong message and risk alienating LGBTQ and pro-abortion voters if she was seen cozying up to Catholics.

Instead Chavez suggested a compromise of sending in the poorly-received video in lieu of an in-person appearance.

Chavez was in tears during the phone call as Kamala shred her to pieces, called her an idiot, inept, horrible at your f-ing job, and told her that her stupid advice is going to be the reason she loses.

The joy is gone.

There have been numerous stories about Kam's temper and her yelling at her staff during her veep tenure and I wondered when tails of her flipping her lid would come out.

A few weeks ago a story came out about Doug hitting his girlfriend and knocking his nanny up. Gotta wonder if abusers change when they get married? The story died fast. But maybe the duo deserve themselves….

A stopped clock...blah blah...
You said you and Sam would go to your old stomping grounds in California soon. Are you gonna skip snow and deprive Sam of her snow nose play, or wait until spring?
I am doing house work today in anticipation of going to an afternoon concert tomorrow. For 5 hours tomorrow, I will not give current events a thought. I hope, anyway.

My camping season sucked this year so I need to make it up to her next year. Might go out to the island for thanksgiving again. Depends on if the spots around my trailer are full. Sheesh…I don’t have enough room to fully open the door it’s so tight. I’m looking for another place.
It’s snowing high up so I’m out of luck there.

@snoopydawg parking spaces. How the heck do you use your trailers' pop outs in small spaces like that?
I just booked a 3 night stay near Luckenbach. They have a good performer at the dance hall on Wednesday before T-Day.
Unfortunately, the cottage with a great view of the deer feeder was booked, so we will be in the smaller, newer cottage next door. We should still see a few deer, a few turkey gobblers, so it is doable.
Just getting away from court craziness is important enough to endure a few small inconveniences, although getting in and out of the door is not small!

to know that there is such a thing, even if nearly nobody knows it exists or celebrates it. I mean, we have a national prayer day, assorted official prayer breakfasts and a vast number of official government meetings that open with a prayer. Really, how oxymoronic is "Dear god, help us to govern rationally"?

Your title, "odds and ends", as usual, sparked an oddball train of thought here. Specifically, can there be odd ends, as in an odd number of ends of linear things. It seems that such a situation would violate topological precepts, but I dunno if there is a theorem or proof as to that. Seemingly, if something linear has but one end, the other must, perforce, go to infinity, but infinity isn't a one way street, so both ends would would go to infinity and it would, ergo, lack any ends

It is farmers' market today and we are, thanks to our recent road trip, out of veggies that aren't frozen or canned except for a small handful of Romas from the garden and a bit of chard from the same source. Accordingly, we must out and about soonly, even though it is only about 52 degrees out, which is on the verge of jacket and long pants weather.

@enhydra lutris Happy Secular Day! Interesting how quietly it comes and goes, ain't it?
We also got home from a trip to no fresh veggies in the house. I do remember forgetting to toss out an orange once, and as soon as I stepped through my front door after some trip to some damn where, the odor a rotten orange smells like a chemical plant. I mean an actual facility, not a magic plant made of chemicals. (Or am I missing something?)
I hope you enjoyed your trip and that you settle back in to normal living routine smoothly.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) filled with explosives hit the vacation home of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the seaside town of Caesarea on Saturday, Israeli media have reported, citing his office. The drone was reportedly launched by the Lebanon-based Hezbollah movement, in the first attack of the conflict aimed at such a high-ranking Israeli target.

I will let you guess what I am saying to myself about this "tragedy".
After making a change in my over all diet to eliminate some sweets, what did I buy on sale at the store? Ice cream.
My self-discipline is limited, as it were.
Early voting starts Monday, so time is running out for Bibi to get us into a war with Iran. If you do not believe I am concerned the IDF would false flag and kill those 100 soldiers assigned to the THAAD and blame it on Iran, you'd be wrong, friend.

He knew that by humiliating the Israeli military and security forces, by taking hundreds of Israelis prisoner, that he would compel the Israeli nation to shed the thin veneer of civility and humanity it wore like a cloak to deceive the world, and instead compel the Israelis to show to the world the truth about who they really were—a nation who believed they were above all others in the world, whose self-proclaimed status as “Gods chosen people” allowed them to lord over the “human animals” who did not profess their faith, raping, murdering, and robbing at will without fear of consequence.

What’s happening to Palestinians now was always going to happen to them. Israel started off with killing and removing 750,000 of them. Wolfe said that the UN gave Israel statehood even though the Stern group was doing heinous crimes against them. Sinwar made the world pay attention to what Israel was already doing. And he killed the Abraham Accords that would have let the world ignore the Palestinian's plight.

Hitler/Nazism ruled in Germany for 12 years.

Netanyahu/Zionists have ruled in Israel for 75. Yes there have been other leaders, but Netanyahu has had his fingers in the government more than anyone else.

Well I’ve heard that the military isn’t happy with Netanyahu so maybe that happened.

Security failures. Again the sirens didn’t go off.

We’re sending our missiles to Israel so Austin told Zelensky that he should use drones instead.
Zelensky is making threats to build nukes…if he keeps this up he isn’t gonna last long.
