Friday Night Photos Woodie World Edition

Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.

Last Saturday morning I took a drive north up the coast to Encinitas for the 44th annual Wavecrest Woodie meet. Weather wise it was a nice morning. Temps in the upper 60s and overcast skies providing nice diffused lighting. Not as many cars this year as there was last year, but still a nice selection of Woodies, some that I had seen before and some that were new.

If you're seeing a few Woodies hearabouts you're doing better than me. The only time I see them is at car meets. You are right, they are very special vehicles. Glad your woodworking skills helped make one special.

Great fun photos!

The cars are all fascinating and impressive. I enjoyed seeing such tasteful interiors. The hotrod woody is hot. I like the first dark green car with the beautifully shaped and tinted windows. It reminds me of a private limousine. The surfboard matches its carrier perfectly. I also like the distorted reflection of the woody and palms in the wheel, and the matching oranges and whites of the tire. I'd like to zoom into the distorted image and see that image alone framed by the orange and white tire.

They are great subjects of beauty and nostalgia. Thanks for sharing them.

The whitewall with the golden-yellow trim and the green Ford Costume wagon it was attached to was my favorite.

@janis b Hi Janis,

Great pics. Do you know names (species type) for them?

Hope all is well!

I know the Nikau Palm intimately. This one and only native palm tree is unique to NZ. It is not only beautiful, but also essential to holding the land together and feeding the birds.

The same Nikau and flower 24 hours later ...

I don’t know the two varieties of grasses.

Enjoy and be well

Hi all, Hey SP!

Great Woodies man! Very nice photos as always. I grew up in Huntington Beach, e.g., Surf City, 62-72 age 7 to 17, they were part of the scenery of my youth. There were some in the lot at high school. You could put surfboards, or sleep in the wagons. I always thought they were cool. Before the VW micro-bus, there were Woody wagons.

Had a couple orioles stop at the birdbath briefly. They are real ginchy there and seconds is all you get.

mysdys saw a female Baltimore Oriole and I got there just in time to miss it. Whilst lamenting this dropped out of the Pecan for a quick sip:

Thanks for the OT and great Woodies SP!

I think woodies were mostly a socal beach thing. Growing up in the SF Bay Area they were few and far between. Nice shots of the Orioles. Ours headed back south for the winter about a month ago.

@Socialprogressive Hi SP,

Thanks, Hooded Oriole are one of the earliest returning species in socal in spring. Some are back from Mexico by mid-to-late February.

I was hoping you would post a pic of that Sabine's Gull at Lake Murray on Sept. 23rd. Smile

… refer to woodies as kind of standard equipment for your 1960s surfing aficianado.

Thanks for the song references. I have to admit I was never a Beach Boys fan. Hearing their music ad nauseam while growing up probably had something to do with it.

One of my very favorite Beach Boy tunes:

Talk about much-needed great memories after a week of Helene tracking and worry. Love the woodies, Sp!! Smile I grew up on the East Coast USA, but was a natural waterbug. I could swim, stay underwater like a fish, and body surf. I could not waterski which practically drove me to tears. Not enough upper body strength and klutzy to boot. I love sailing, fishing, and I don't get seasick even now in my senior citizen years. LOL. I love and respect the oceans. That's how I became a lifelong environmentalist. Whew, this is a long post for me. Love the photos and tunes, you all. Good news on the stormfront: The obf/orl casa made it through Helene in great shape: No floods, tree damage or power loss. All we got were mild tropical storm conditions from the hurricane storm bands. Helene was a monster (no surprise). You would not believe the enormous damage from the storm surges and heavy, heavy rain/flash flooding. FL, GA, the Carolinas and TN all got zapped worse than us in ECFL. We've still got a few more weeks to go but, hopefully, the worse has peaked. Everyone take good care and stay safe! Rec'd!! Smile

@Socialprogressive ...was similar to Orlbucfan's. A few days of worry. But basically no significant damage in my area.

My daughter lives inland north of the Tampa area, they made it through okay as well. My son's family in southern Georgia, had some minor damage to their garden, greenhouse, etc. The few old pecan trees held up on their property. The wealthy neighbor who owns a large portion of the original pecan orchard lost quite a few trees. With large trees falling in the area, there are a lot of power lines and power out. Unfortunately a firefighter in their area seems to have been killed by the storm. My son can't find a gas station with the fuel pumps turned on. The phone service is almost non-existent there. It was quite disturbing to Ms. So and I to see home and business owners on the gulf coast who suffered severe damage and losses for the second time.

Mr. Weatherman is anticipating that maybe 30 percent chance, there could be another one threatening in 6 or 7 days or so.

Thanks for keeping us in mind SP. Enjoyed the Woodie photos. I used to see them at the beach when I was trying to surf as a youngster. Growing up near the coast, I was into all the water activities like orlbucfan. I could waterski but was wary of the snakes on the wonderful freshwater lakes of Florida, I had a small boat mostly for fishing. As I aged, I got rid of all the paraphernalia, outboard, fishing stuff, skis, etc., and settled on swimming. I still love to swim, but don't get to do it often enough.

Glad to hear you and your family made it through Helene with only minor damage. I don't think I could live with having to deal with a hurricane every few years. Sure we have earthquakes here in Ca. but we don't have an earthquake season, and we rarely get large ones that cause major damage.

I'm glad the hurricane left you in relatively great shape. Only another 1 or 2 months to get through until next hurricane season. All the best!
