Friday Night Photos Walkabout Coronado Edition

Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.

Well, after a week of triple digit temps things finally cooled off on Wednesday. The last two days have been in the low to mid 80s with a mild breeze, dropping to the upper 50s at night. The 7 day forecast calls for more of the same. Infinitely better.

On Tuesday the camera club had its monthly outing in Coronado, a spit of land in the San Diego bay with a land bridge (the Silver Strand) running south to Imperial Beach at the south end of the bay, and a man made bridge (Coronado bridge) going east to San Diego. Coronado is an odd mix of a famous hotel (Hotel del Coronado where the movie Some Like It Hot was filmed), multi million dollar beach and bay front homes, a lot of trendy shops, and 2 navy bases (one of which I worked at for 20 years).

The spinning wheel thingy is a very creative wind vane, very near the metal head at tidelands park.
Your first shot is pure serenity. I'd like to be sitting in that empty chair at the end of the dock.

That is a classic image of serenity, a perfectly silky smooth lake to reflect on. Nice for you.

The head sculpture, despite its metallic materials, brings a more human face to the backdrop of concrete and glass architecture. What a contrast to the equally stately and unique look of the Coronado hotel. So, is the $1500 per night room the circular one at the top of what looks like a strange lighthouse on the left?

The multiplicity photo is wonderful, a perfect moment and composition of form and light.

Tubular Bells is pretty trippy stuff.

@janis b
how human you can make strips of bent and folded metal look. I think most of the $1500 rooms are on the west side and have an ocean view.
Tubular Bells got a lot of rotations on the stereo turntable back in the day. Probable drove my parents crazy.

from mid-afternoon, down below.

The day has been mild and continually building to the rain that is now falling, and watering the freshly planted bushes and trees. I'm happy.

A random photo from this week that I'd like to dedicate to eyo ...

Very nice of you to dedicate your photo to eyo.
I love the image. What's the leaf sitting on? Is it rock, sand or some type of cloth?

Hi all, Hey SP,

Thanks for the OT SP!

Great scenics of 'daygo' man. Note spellcheck doesn't know what scenics are. Heckova hotel ya got there! I thought that Rady Shell was a Giant Periwinkle at first. I bet horns sound great there. Hope the Pine xpress stopped at yer place. Love that wind vane, very cool.

Fall migration is getting underway... about the time I would start planning some fall day trips to the TJRV and Pt. Loma. The next month all sorts of crazy stuff will be found. Keep yer eyes peeled!

Our crowd of fall migrant Ruby-throated Hummingbird was over a hundred Sept. 4-7, whence a blowout occurred on the strong northerlies (a free 20 mph push). Not a dozen daily all week since last Saturday. I did not even see one adult male that day, it was down to immatures and females. About a hundred images and one half-assed crop of a perched bird was all I managed to muster.

probably an immature - absolutely a Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Hope all are well!

happy trails!

Catching hummers inflight is hard. One good image out of 100 is on par with all the bird photographers I know.

What nice visitors you have.

I am often amazed at how birds and humans can look so alike. Here is a favourite NZ artist who captured the mystery and beauty of the two ...

...for lawyers once many years back at the Coronado. It was a day a half program to fulfill all the annual credit requirements. My boss flew me out there but I stayed overnight at a much less expensive place inland. I remember seeing a carrier or two in the basin at the time. Reminded me of the bad ole days in Mayport or Norfolk. I remember the exact date because it was a few weeks before 911, and the experience on one of the plane rides over was memorably unpleasant.

I really think the Heavy metal man is awesome. The bike rider is cool too. Nice skyline views. Thanks for the photos SP.

I was working at NAS North Island at the time of 9/11. They locked down the base to civilians for three days. A real crappy way to get a three day vacation. I hope your plane ride out here was the only unpleasant part of your trip.
