Friday Night Photos Small World Edition

Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.

Hard to believe it's the start of my fourth year behind the wheel of FNP. Harder yet to believe I haven't driven it into a ditch. A very heartfelt thanks to everyone that has contributed photos, memes, music, links and conversation that have helped keep the wheels on the road.

What beautiful looking elephants. Someone sure put a lot of work into creating them. Love the Zepher tune. I'm adding that to my spotify playlist.

Spring is clearly in the air …

Speaking of respite from the awfuI state of things, I came across this reference today from a local news site ...

Reasons to be Cheerful was founded by artist and musician David Byrne, who believes in the power of approaching the world with curiosity—in art, in music, in collaboration and in life.

https://reasonstobecheerful.world/

I was reminded by the Santana of this timeless gem ...

Enjoy the weekend and be well

Rain is good when it falls in moderate amounts. It keeps things lush, and bush fires at bay. Decades ago, when choosing to live in lush environments, I could never imagine the degree of threat from warming and drought-inducing conditions.

Moderation, with the occasional burst of intensity is fine with me ; ).

@janis b Hey J!

Great photo! Is it fog lifting or just humidity from rain? Looks neat!

People are mostly tuned into celestial or astronomical seasons, though I always much-liked the Climatalogical seasons, as in Farmer;'s Almanac. In which June-August is summer, climatalogically speaking. So in that regard, our summer (your winter), ends tomorrow. A new season is here.

Thanks for the pic and sounds!

Hi all, Hey SP!

Hope it's all good out there!

Ya know what bugs me? INSECTS! Smile

In fact I was just outside in dark smoking my pipe, a fine golden cavendish, and as often a sphinx moth came in to the tobacco smoke and kissed me on the cheek. Told mysdys, said it was the most romantic overture I had all day, and got another! Wink

Great bug shots SP! Love yer insect pix. I am not a fly (Diptera) guy, though know a couple of those sorts. The number of types of flies is astonishing. I like beetles, odes (dragons), and butterflies in particular, but will photo anything whatsoever. Get the pics, with them maybe an ID will come later. I love those 'few-spotted' lady beetles. They are very neat types. Might be a 'two-spotted' in that second pic of them. I think the first one is the introduced non-native Asian type.

Incident at Neshabar is a great song. Besides that, on Abraxas (vinyl here) Hope You're Feelin' Better is my other fav song. Of course the 'Gypsy Queen' ending to Black Magic Woman is great too...

Thanks for the OT and great bug shots SP!

back in a flash with a pic...

happy trails all!

I saw Santana here in San Diego. Jeff Beck opened for him. As much as I love Carlos, he was a little lack luster. Jeff Beck put on a better performance that night.

@Socialprogressive Hi SP,

Wow, what a couple greats in one show! I never saw either somehow... Beck was in another dimension. No one played like Jeff. We all have bad nights... I would think it hard to have to be "ON" by a calendar and clock. Especially with the touring pressures.

I meant to thank you last night for your FOUR YEARS of service! You do a great job at it, and I really appreciate it!

Thanks amigo!

Hi again,

Interesting the element is spelled sulfur, and in butterflies it is spelled sulphur. They are generally yellow of course, and there are many types, some hard to tell apart. I have two larger types around now on our blooming Red Turkscap. I was trying to get some flight shots as they perched with wings closed so you only see the dorsal surface in flight. Or pinned out in an insect collection. I had to settle for about fifty shots of Turkscap with nuthin' on it, a few perched ventral shots, which I have lots of already, and one passable flight shot. When they jump off a flower they move a foot per wingbeat so are out of frame nearly immediately. These are a couple inches long and nearing three inches in wingspan. So big and pretty, dashing about rapidly.

Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae) is widespread across the southern U.S. Males are lemon yellow.
clooudless082724b.jpg

cloudless082624c.jpg

This is a Large Orange Sulphur (PHoebis agarithe) which is more restricted of range, mostly in south Texas, south Florida, and some in southern AZ. Males are orange above and orange-yellow below. If you look at leading edge of forewing... the narrow more orange line is the dorsal surface of left wing, most of what we are seeing is ventral of right wings. Males are sun orange above.
LgOrg082724b.jpg

The only flight shot I would show is a Cloudless Sulphur. Pre-focus on the flowers and hope one comes in, though they never do if they see you waiting all lined up. Enough of it is seeable to not a throw-away anyway.

cloudless-flight082624.jpg

Enjoy yer bugs people! Smile

happy trails all!

No matter how you spell it the Sulphurs are pretty butterflies. I see them around here often but they never sit still long enough for me to get a shot of one. Those red flowers are pretty cool looking too.

@Socialprogressive Hi again SP,

The spell check here (Microsoft?) only knows how to spell the element, not the butterfly. I got red squigglied under every one. LOL

The flower is named for its shape, like a Turks cap. They are native here and fairly common. Had to fence ours to keep the deer from popping those flowers like candy. Must be full of nectar.

You do have Cloudless Sulphur there mostly summer and fall I think. Various species of Senna are the foodplant as you can tell by the scientific name 'sennae'. The cats are bright yellow with narrow black bars and very cool looking too.

Thanks again for all your work here maintaining the OT for all these years! Keep up the great work!
