Saturday Open Thread - 7/27/24: Odds and Ends
Good morning! I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend unfolding!
Yesterday was deer day. As soon as I got home from work, I saw a buck slowly galloping alongside my yard fence. He didn't speed up because of me. He was the one that stared me down last week. A few hours later, we spied a doe and her fawn had joined him. Our first sighting of the fawn.
Now, I love deer. And elk, antelope, etc., not for food, but for viewing pleasure. Nevertheless, if Mr. Gates et. al., kill off farting cows to save the climate, will we turn toward eating Bambi?
All at once, I had an anxiety attack. Do deer fart? See for yourself.

On Thursday while I was at work, Dear One noticed the bunny in the yard came to munch Bahia grass, then would take breaks, hop over to stare at the porch where I sit. Bunny missed me.
About the beatification of California, as the RW Supreme Court gave the green light to arrest homeless and take their personal property under their tents or in their grocery carts, leftie (joke!) Cal. Guv. wants the allotted a billion $ to to clean up. To housing? Fuck the poor, like, this is a new thing?

For the past 2 springs, there has been a parula in the yard. It spends time in a crepe myrtle tree right near a living room window. The window becomes his attack point daily, often beginning at daylight. I can't get back to sleep once his pecking and banging begins.
We have rain today, and Sunday, and Monday. Roads and bridges here and there are impassable. We must go 10 miles out of our way to shop for groceries this weekend.
Oh, well, shit happens.

Hi Capt.
Northern Mockingbird is often a prime offender in this. But a fair number of birds sing at night. Yellow-breasted Chat are heavy nocturnal singers. Most of the all-nighter Mockers are unmated males, and they are usually going through all the imitations they know, mixed in with their own song. Many do a dozen or two perfect imitations of other birds. So if it seems always different radically changing, it is probably a Mockingbird, or Mocker as we often call them. Catbird can sing at night too. Both are family Mimidae, the mimics.
Good news is territorial singing is really slowing down for the year. Here our dawn chorus which is a cacophony March to June, is a couple soloists left. Songbirds territorial singing is controlled by testosterone which is controlled by photoperiod. With decreasing daylength, testosterone production is decreasing and with it singing. So it should be mostly over soon. Some birds still may sing in winter, but usually not the ame types of songs or with the intensity they do in breeding season.

The Garage Project has been epic, hasn't it? And a gardening project next? And here I sit, no projects, unless washing dishes counts.
I have completed a child custody case that took almost 2 years to complete. Two judges, 3 temporary hearings, one final trial, then a long hearing to beat down a request for a re-trial.
I had tried to show the father with custody had become a danger to his kids, needed to live with their mom. Over the 2 year period, he beat his daughter who had to seek er treatment. Prior to the re-trial, he was arrested for beating a female convenience store cashier, and is facing 2 felony charges. I finally got it through the Judge's hard head when I questioned the man about that incident, and he had to invoke the 5th. That did it. Shit like this interrupts my sleep, and is always in the back of my mind. I haven't relaxed since I took on that case.
I can finally rest knowing those kids are ok.

In truth, I lost interest in sports with the rise of various drugs used for performance enhancement. The last sport I kept up with was horse racing. And that sport has a very sordid history of all kinds of horse abuse, jockey abuse, and creative cheating.
I casually glimpse at the results of the Triple Crown to see if any horse breaks Secretariat's record.
Now, the failure to select the best woman basketball shooter in that sport in history from playing, much less being selected for the Olympic team, I give.

In the US, deciding who is and is not ncluded on the Olympics
teams is a sport in and of itself with plenty of politics and giving a lot of weight to factors that are irrelevant to actual qualifications . It has always been crazy and hence mildly entertaining.
I still watch some sports because some cool stuff happens now and then, as well as some funny stuff and crazy stuff. Also, it beats the news and politics as a time killer.
My projects are currently at the very slow but sure stage. Yesterday involved several distractions such as a run to a community recycling event to drop off about 1/4 of a truckload of stuff, some grocery shopping, and unloading and putting away a couple of things they didn't accept for recycling (heh).

Farts
Was hospitalized for abdominal issues a couple of years ago. The intestinal doctor/surgeon told me that the best thing someone can do is to fart. If you fart, then that means that everything inside is working. So, fart away it's a sign of good health.
Hot as hell here. Then it rains, like Noah and the Ark type rain where everything floods. Then it gets hot as hell again. Does not cool off. Seriously considering moving to North Georgia, South Carolina, or even Tennessee. Someplace where the winters don't get too bad but it's maybe not quite as stifling in the summertime. I've got at least two relatives wanting to move to Florida. Why?

I have read about fights breaking out in the plane economy seating over farts. I need to apologize for bitching about those guys in the seat right in front of me. After all, I am glad they are in good health.
I have actually checked out properties in Georgia and S. Carolina. Don't forget to check out Oklahoma and Arkansas, two states that have recently lured numerous clients to leave Texas, do a re-start there.
Not sure I would like Florida. Hurricanes here are bad enough. I know it is petty, but I get really tired of their toll roads.

Part of the push to keep Biden in was to keep Kamala out. Overnight, she is officially the best and most qualified and experienced person in America.

I did read an opinion piece that said Biden is furious at Obama pushing him out, and that a furious Biden immediately endorsed Kamala as a big FU to Obama.

Accusing people of being single issue voters
tells me that person doesn’t give a fck about kids being blown apart or starving to death or dying from polio or some other gawd awful disease. Or genocide in general. Cows, and deer and elk, use a fermentation in their stomachs to help break down vegetable matter, methane is a byproduct. Other things like horses and humans don't have multiple stomachs and don't do the fermentation chewing their cud type thing.
Methane is greatly exacerbated in that we fatten cows on feed lots using corn, which adds a lot to the methane. That said cows finished on corn taste a lot better, it's not just a way to add pounds.

There is a big difference in taste and texture, and in marbling, between grass fed beef and corn fed beef. I admit to preferring the latter.
I suspect there is way more methane emitted by nature that cows emit.
There are many dichotomies in the science of climate change.
Seems most things we attempt to help wind up not working well.

I would have more confidence
in Seymour Hersh’s writing if it didn’t require a paid subscription to read. Why would a formerly well respected journalist (who is probably not in need of money) not want to encourage value in reporting the news, free to all. So what if the New Yorker, or other news outlets don't publish him any more? It's sort of like click-bate, which seems somewhat demeaning to me.

our gut bacteria tell their relatives which live in our cells (mitochondria) what is coming down the pike for lunch. Interesting hypothesis I heard somewhere along the line.
Compared to the release of methane when we blew up the Nord Stream, farts add very little to the atmosphere.
