Friday Night Photos Nifty Fifty Edition
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
I've been without internet for the last day and a half. I wasn't sure if I would get it back in time to post tonight's FNP. Thankfully I resolved the problem and I'm back online. Being without the internet these days is like being stranded on a desert island.
You're probably asking yourself why is this weeks edition titled Nifty Fifty. In the photography world nifty fifty refers to a 50mm camera lens. Back in the film days most all 35mm SLR cameras were sold with a 50mm lens. It's also the focal length that comes closest to matching the field of view of human eyes. This months camera club photo challenge was to wander around Balboa Park using only a 50mm lens.

Aside from being a great photographer are you also a techie? Or was something as simple as accidentally hitting the airplane mode?

I'm not any kind of techie. The original loss of internet was due to problems on the service provider end of the line yesterday morning. They finally restored service late in the afternoon but I wasn't able to connect to the internet. This morning I still couldn't connect so I contacted the cable company. They said everything looked good on their end and offered some things to to check on my end. In the process of making those checks I found out that I had been logged out of the account with the modem manufacture. Once I logged into the account the modem was able to connect with the service provider and I had internet back.

There is one spot in the mountains where I can get service or I have to drive miles to get a reliable connection. I feel so isolated from the world, but it can refresh my brain.
Boy do I remember the days of only having a 50mm lens, but looking at old pictures I did okay with it. I use a 28-300 on my camera and I have 3 settings on my iPhone. Sometimes it was fun to fix the picture in the darkroom. Boy I’d love to set one up in my basement and do b-w again. Sure miss the smell of acidic acid….lol.

Your 28-300 has a nice focal range and gives you lots of versatility. Good for landscapes on the wide end, portraits in the mid focal range and long enough to capture subjects that are not so close. I know the smart phones today can do some great photo work and being small, light, and you can carry in your pocket, is a real plus, I still prefer using a camera I can hold up to my eye when taking a photo.

Great photos SP! Looking back at 60 years of photos, I wish I would have shot more 50mm stuff. Much of my photo world was through 400-500mm. I had a 35 mm wide angle I really liked for scenics. Spell check never saw the word scenics before apparently. The most basic AI is a mega fail.

Auto corrupt is ticking me off this week. It’s been

Seems like spell check has never seen the name Santee either. I always get the squiggly red line underneath it every time I use it.

It's not just spell check. Auto edit drives me absolutely nuts. Thank god, I was a professional proofreader back in my working days. Hope when AI is mature, it's semi-literate! I like the photo mix. You guys start the photog tech talk, I can figure a lot of it out. Hubster is trained in film and video, and spent his career working mostly in high end sports entertainment.
Flooding in So. Florida has been the big news here. We finally got some much-needed rain but no floods. Well, that's climate damage for ya. Wait until we get a big blow (hurricane). El yucko supremo!!!!

When it comes to spell checking. I still prefer the good old dictionary. Stay safe and dry from the storms. Around here we're moving into fire season. Last Saturday there was a wild fire nearby that required the use of half a dozen fire fighting aircraft to put out.

By the time it goes through all its translations it arrives at nonsense. I do wonder whether humans will become more random, due to AI, along with the language.

There's something so satisfying and familiar about the 50mm lens focal length. My preference is usually the equivalent in the square format. I also like having the more panoramic format in digital cameras.

ps. who is that a sculpture of, and is the bird at the bottom part of the sculpture or a shadow of a live bird?

Most of my photography is done with longer lenses so using a 50mm was a nice change of pace.
The sculpture is of William Shakespeare. It's located outside the Old Globe theater where live plays are preformed. Many of them Shakespeare plays. And not a bird, just a leaf.

Well actually, they can't...
This Carolina Chickadee regularly comes to bath when OTHER birds are bathing, to HOVER in THEIR splashes!
This is a White-eyed Vireo. Vireos generally only splash bathe. Which means they do not wade into the water like many songbirds. They only dive into in momentarily, splashing into it, and flying back up to a perch to repeat over and over. Catching it is another thing... you can see the white iris which combined with yellow lores is definitive for ID. Note yellow sides as well.

Those are yer leftovers? The kiwi diet is not what I imagined.
In Texas most leftovers have bones. 
LOVE the nautilus. How'd they get it in a bottle? Wide mouth? Don't they usually have a bunch of brown stripes on the shell? All mine do. I think these are sanded down to make them all white? I have sold LIVE Chambered Nautilus to Sea World San Diego and Denver Zoo/Aquarium, many years ago. They come up at night to just a couple/few hundred feet deep. They are caught with chicken baited cage traps. There are billions and billions of them. The shell specimens I have are mostly about 4" in size, the ones we shipped were more like 5, but have seen live ones 8" or so, and they get even bigger. There is an ancient fossilized relative, I think Ammonites is the name, which can be several feet in diameter. There is also a neat modern extant species called Paper Nautilus (or Argonaut ?) that is very neat.

About 20 years ago I bought a whole Nautilus shell and a half shell in a shell shop, of which I think there were several around. A couple years later I bought the vase in NZ, and realised while looking at it one day that maybe that half Nautilus would fit in it. It nestled in the vase perfectly and has been on my kitchen counter ever since. I have my doubts that shell shops exist any more. The one in the vase is 4”, the full one is 5’.
I think you’re right about the natural look of the Nautilus. When I looked at google images it seems that the white ones are polished or ‘Pearlised’. I have seen some natural ones as well on shelves somewhere. I learned this about them. I will photograph the inside and post it next Friday.
