Friday Night Photos Hide And Seek Edition
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
Last Thursday afternoon I was at the computer putting Friday Night Photos together. Since it was a nice day I had the back door open and I could hear a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks calling nearby. I didn't think much of it since I hear them all the time. After a while the calling was not coming from nearby but from one of the Eucalyptus trees in my backyard so I grabbed the binoculars and went to the back door to have a look. Just as I was raising the binoculars to my eyes the hawk flew off to another part of the tree out of my view. While cursing my bad luck I noticed some movement in the tree. When I looked at that part of the tree I saw there was a Barn Owl sitting there. That's when I grabbed the camera and went outside to try and get some shots of the owl. I got a few shots of the hawks before they decided I posed a bigger threat than the owl and they flew off, and the owl, no longer threatened, lowered its head to its chest and went to sleep. Two hours later the owl was still in the tree sleeping when the hawks came back to harass it some more. I went out with the camera again and the hawks left again. A few hours later as the sun set and darkness closed in the owl was still sleeping peacefully in the tree.

I couldn’t find the owl
.
but I did see a deer with one eye open and just below it is a bear. Now that’s talent!
Nice photos again.

Hi, snoopy
You didn't see the Beagle?
If the owl had not moved while I was looking, I never would have known it was there.
Hope you and Sam are doing well.

You are lucky that you see so many birds
I have never seen an owl, but heard one once. And the bird population is really down here. Only blue jays or magpies at the cemetery were there used to be all kinds. They have a new 5G tower up and that’s when I first noticed their absence. Sad.
We’ve been having your weather. It snowed even last Tuesday and today ver high winds and lots of rain. Sam is upset because I can’t stay out very long because of the wind. My power went out this morning during the 65 mph east winds. They get funneled down the cayenne and pick up speed. Ahh well it looks like we’re done with the cold and heading up to the 80's. Almost swimming time if there are any beaches. Good winter.

San Diego county
has the largest variety of bird species of any county in the US. I hear owls hooting at night quite often but this is the first time I've seen one in the daytime.

There’s some good news from Utah
The white pelicans have returned to the salt lake for the first time in 80 years. They aren’t on antelope island, but another one. I’m thinking of taking the Sam to the island next week. Hopefully the water won’t be an hour away.

Return of the Pelicans
That's good news indeed.

Hi Social
I love the owl in the eucalyptus, and your musical selection. Any of you guitar players here ever tried strumming with a beer bottle?
We've had a straight week of perfectly blue skies, and perfectly cold nights. The drop in temperature between day and night is extreme, from 60° (which feels like 80° in the sun) to 37°.
As long as we're playing games, what do you guys see in this photo?
Have a great weekend all and be well
Hi Janis
Beautiful photo! Is it a lily? Is that natural color? Absolutely gorgeous.
I bet that would look great on a wall about 6 or 8 feet square!
thanks for sharing!
be well!

Hi d
It's a canna lily leaf, with the start of a new leaf in the centre. It is very close to the true colour in the sun at midday today.
Trying to imagine the image dominating such a big space on the wall is an interesting test of my imagination. I'll let you know if it inspires any thoughts. I'm sure your suggestion comes from an interesting place ; ).
Cheers to you always, and thanks!
Hi, Janis
Your temperature swing is a lot like what we get here in the fall. 80s during the day and 40s at night.
I'm seeing a sorcerers hat in your photo.

I see the same thing Social
I think it would also make a nice candle ; ).
Have a wonderful weekend!
I saw something similar only I thought, a witch's hat.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Great Barn Owl pics SP! Awesome birds. There are about a dozen species of them around the world. They are usually tame when you find them roosting in the day. Palm trees are favorites, look for owl pellets below the trees to find the roost tree. Also Arundo, that introduced Giant Cane, they will roost in large patches of that, often in flocks. I have flushed a dozen out of a roost in winter.
A couple old-time names for them were monkey-faced owl, and heart-faced owl. The facial disks are parabola. They funnel the sound to the ear allowing them to pinpoint its location with uncanny accuracy. How accurate you ask?
Search utube for Roger the Barn Owl, see if that is still up. They took a room and spring-loaded foot square tiles with speakers, wired to a grid. Then they would emit mouse sounds from say F8 tile. When Roger landed on a tile his weight made a connection so that was recorded. Then dialed the light down until it was pitch dark, no light whatsoever. Roger landed on the right tile first time every time all the time in pitch black.
A Barn Owl pair in a belfry in England brought 80 mice back to the nest with 9 young in it, in ONE night! Maybe the best mousers evah. Clutch size depends on food availability.
Many folks hear Barn Owls and would never guess it is an owl as their calls are very un-owl-like.
just the wretched screech

some metallic clicks, then a couple shreiks

I hear the screech regularly in spring and fall when migrants pass through my area.
Thanks for the great pics SP!
love Danny Gatton, but would hate beer on my neck and strings...

The last place I lived
I would hear the Barn Owls screeching at night. It was before I knew anything about birds. I thought they were Screech Owls. I was surprised when I saw the Barn Owl since I never hear them at night. Around here all I hear are Great Horned Owls.

Thank you for the fullness your information brings
I think if I had heard that singular owl screech I would have thought it was some electrical malfunction.
Hi pixelators

Hi, dystopian
Nice shots of the House Wren. I've been seeing them in my yard the last few days. Unfortunately the little boogers won't sit still long enough for me to get any decent shots of them.

You have the sweetest birds visiting
If you find an extra feather from the house wren please save it for me.
I sound like a broken record, but:
I love the great pics!!! That Barn Owl is a super hider, Sp. Thanks for pointing it out. Geez, a momma Barn Owl brought 80 mouse meals back for her family in one night??? Talk about stamina! Hey snoopy, glad to hear the GSL is somewhat recovering water-wise. Speaking of weather, we finally got some very much needed rain last night. My sister lives inland, about an hour SW of Tallahassee. Thank god, she did not get hit with the violent weather Tallahassee suffered: tornado, violent storms, power outages. And we still have storm season to endure!!! Rec'd, you all.

Hi, orlbucfan
Like I mentioned to snoopy, if the owl had not moved around in the tree I never would have seen it.
Glad to hear your sister didn't get slammed by the storm.

Seeing that Owl sleeping is the coolest thing.
We have several types of Owls but the most present are the Tawny Owls which each seem to claim a local patch of woodland.
We hear them just before complete darkness in the twilight most times of the year. Up close they have hoots, chortles laughs and more.
A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit. Allegedly Greek, but more possibly fairly modern quote.

Hi, DM
Around here Barn Owls and Great Horned Owls predominate. I hear the Great Horned Owls at night a lot but the only one I've seen during the day was at a Raptor rescue center.
