Saturday Open Thread - 4/20/24: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!

I had a little trip through 5 counties to attend a series of lectures for purposes of fulfilling the requirement to attend a minimum of 15 hours of legal education each year.

I am very proud of myself for staying awake and faking interest in the topics.

This trip goofed up my usual shopping trip to do a little consumer prices check on food, but I can say that the gas prices held fast and firm at $3.20 per gallon from my town to the gulf. I am interested about prices for basic necessities around the country, so please let us know how it is affecting your part of this "exceptional" country. /s

I am now gonna turn to a topic that has recently become an issue in my law practice: underwear.

Years ago, a young man died, leaving behind a young wife. Wife was hated by the man's mother, who, unfortunately, lived on the same acreage, and who had primary rights to control the acreage.

They were trying to get along, post-funeral, and wife understood mil wanted to receive certain personal effects of her son. Agreed. Until mil insisted she be allowed to get her son's underwear, including his dirty underwear still in a laundry basket of dirty clothes. Hell in probate court was then unleashed. I thought this was a fluke. I was wrong.

Looking back to many asset and debt lists of many divorcing couples, I have always grouped intimate apparel into a category of "personal effects" without listing them item by item, nor has it ever been necessary for me to assign monetary values to underwear. How the hell do you assess the fair market value of used panties? If anybody on the site has experience in this niche field, please share!

So, a client listed 50 items in storage she wanted. Her valuable art and furniture was way down the list. Bra and panties (pastel color) was at the top. I told her to revise and edit the list ahead of mediation to only what is valuable. She cut the list to 30 items. Bras came in first, panties second.

She ranked for importance, not $ value.

Well, I discussed this with a couple of attorneys. One choked from laughter, said he would add underwear specifically to his client information forms. The other said she hoped I had malpractice insurance for all those past cases where I failed to put a dollar value on underwear. It is possible someone got ripped off! Then, she choked from laughter.

Before you think these people must be young and stupid, imagine these underwear issues arising from people in the professional class, middle-aged. Well, they were from the latter describe class. Both times.

We think of politicians and banksters and weapons manufacturers being crazy, but craziness comes from many sources, many types of folks. Perhaps Bill Clinton fielding a question from a reporter, "Boxers or briefs?", was a portend.

The one who wrote it:

The one who could sing it to the music chart heavens:

PSA: List underwear, both clean or dirty, in your will or pre-nuptual agreement.

I leave it to you good people to do the right thing. It can save money, time, effort.

on who wore said underwear...at least in the used category. New underwear could be valued based on Amazon, WalMart, or some retail outlet. Your buddies are correct, the situation is laughable. What a bizarre world!

A drizzle here today, and a larger rain due tomorrow...and the world is green. Got down cardboard and wood chips in the central garden alley, plus mulched trees. Glad we beat the rain.

Have a good day, and thanks for the OT! We're off to B'ham for a memorial service for an old friend who recently passed away.

@Lookout Glad you got your mulching done. A chore, but a very satisfying chore, ain't it?
Although I seldom get involved in local politics, we had a miracle win in the sheriff's race. A good friend/client of mine, against all odds, beat the incumbent sheriff by such a large margin, there is no run off. This afternoon, a party is being thrown, and we will go for a while, have a spaghetti dinner, and just look around at the scene, get an idea who in the community is of like mind.
The man has had to watch his back for a year, as the way to eliminate opponents is to arrest them on phony criminal charges, or burn their house down. That is true. Not making it up. I have defended at least 6 officials and all charges were either dismissed or juries found them not guilty. A judge's house was burned down, a man running for constable had his home burn down, and an ex-wife of a commissioner had her house burned to the ground, sending the message to keep her mouth shut.
LO, so sorry about the loss of your friend. Here's hoping the family sorted out the underwear problem and that there will be no fight over them. (I just can't make this shit up!)

@snoopydawg I believe the initial stage of the COVID lock downs did interrupt supply chains, but that was short-lived.
Trucks were limited by the highway patrol from entering the Texas border.
That said, the article you linked is short, to the point, and today, it is absolutely true $100 worth of groceries before is $65 in groceries now.
I bitch about our government aiding and abetting the Gaza genocide by starvation, and often forget that they aid and abet the starvation of Americans every damn day. Can't regulate mergers and can't regulate price gouging, because lobbyists.

or social policy more generally, is to protect the big players and enforce dependence on them for everyone else...

Vaccine mandates (for people, chickens...) a pretty good example - choke off/demonize any alternatives, eliminate any liability for those making and dispensing, facilitate by control of hospital systems, regulatory agencies, state medical boards...

And you've got a system that works just fine for those in a position to cash in, for everyone else not so much.

Seems like there's a generalized war against small producers. Below is from Oregon - apparently, if you are using a well to water a half acre of lawn around your MacMansion it's unregulated, but use the same amount of land to grow anything for sale then you *are* subject to Oregon-level bureaucratic hoops to jump through.

Presumably as punishment for attempting to do something productive...

It’s really the Sam car because she’s not that comfortable in the car with the top up which I have to do if I drive long distances and on faster roads. It’s just not safe for her if the top is down. question everything

One more underwear story.
Over 25 yrs ago, a young couple were divorcing, and the fight was about child custody, not assets.
My client was the wife/mom. Husband/dad was from a prominent family.
In order to make sure the judge understood the problem, we offered into evidence the guy's favorite lace trimmed underwear, matching bra, and spike heeled dressy shoes. This was his favorite attire when at home.
The ultra conservative judge was not amused, gave my client custody, gave dad visitation only if supervised by an adult relative.
He got pissed about being outed, ran to his truck, laid his rifle barrel in the driver's window, circled the court house until police finally surrounded him. Meanwhile, my client and I were in the judge's chambers lying on the floor. Big windows on the outer wall of the room.
This lasted 30 minutes. I was given police protection from the courthouse to my home. 4 cop cars, in fron, to the rear, and both sides. They stayed with me until I got into my home. I was told, shoot first, then call 911.
What I dread is having a fight in open court about who gets the underwear and what value is placed on it by the husband. So far, he doesn't seem to be fixated on the underwear.
The current sheriff hates my guts, so I can't count on protection now.
Have a great weekend, my dear friend!

Pepe Escobar: Russia shot down Israeli F-35 loaded with a nuke

EXCLUSIVE
THE REAL STORY OF THE ISRAELI COUNTER RESPONSE

From a very high level intel source.

In Asia.

NOT Russia-China.

Although the strategic partnership, of course, exchanges at the highest level 24-7.

Confirmed and re-confirmed.

It will be great to know what Sy Hersh hears from his Beltway sources.

Here we go.

Israel initially chose to respond with extreme force.

An F-35 loaded with a nuclear bomb was sent east over Jordan.

The mission: cause a high-altitude detonation over Iran that would provoke a surge in the high-capacity power lines, crippling Iran's electric grid, as well as disabling all electronic devices.

An EMP attack.

However...

... As the Israeli F-35 was leaving Jordanian airspace it was shot down by the Russian Air Force.

Hence the publicised version of the Israeli counter response was such a travesty.

In the end all sides decided not to publicise the real news - to de-escalate what could well turn into WWIII.

Someone posted this screenshot.

That’s part of the discussion over there. Since Pepe is the source then I think the likely hood of it being true is better than false, but who knows? Israel would be a pariah and lose all kinds of support if they did that. And how dangerous would it be for a nuclear plant to lose power? But if this is true then I want the word to get out. Hopefully Israel’s criminal enablers would rethink their support.

Pepe Escobar Ignites Social Media

Pepe Escobar is a new and trusted friend. He is a smart, delightful person. I have had the privilege of sharing time with him in Moscow twice in the last six months. I have been getting a number of queries to comment on his latest. Here is what he posted today:

I am certain that Pepe is reporting accurately what his source told him. The problem I have is with the source. I don’t know if the source genuinely believes this or was asked to circulate it as a story. I see one big problem with the source’s account. It is this:

… As the Israeli F-35 was leaving Jordanian airspace it was shot down by the Russian Air Force.

An F-35 leaving Jordanian airspace would be crossing into Syria or Iraq. Those areas are under the control of the United States. My understanding is that after the Russians intervened in Syria in September 2015, the U.S. Commander of AFCENT, based at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, started communicating on a daily basis with his Russian counterpart in Syria in order to deconflict U.S. and Russian air operations. All of this is done from the CAOC aka Combined Air Operations Center.

We got one of those on Geni (genealogical site I hang out on), stuffed full of "Black Studies Run Amok". It seems there's a lunatic fringe full of Young Earth Creationists to whom it is an article of faith that "everybody" was Black until very recent history (they're not consistent with themselves, let alone each other, as to how recently), and they claim a Vast International Conspiracy To Suppress The Truth and yada yada yada. This particular twit expressed the opinion that melanin is essential to being human and "the more melanin you have, the more human you are". He got called out for Hate Speech, the offending statements (there were more of them than just that one) were deleted, the discussion was locked...but the twit was not banned even though Hate Speech is explicitly against the Terms of Use. 4th grade science: We studied the Bell Curve, not what you see when you google it today. We sat through science classes, looked at the screen, saw pictures and diagrams projected, showing how the back of the head of Negro was curved, protruding outward, how their foreheads were flat, and how that made them incapable of high intelligence, and much closer to "their" ancestors, the apes. Melanin kept them from getting sun burned, making them the perfect farm worker. Diagrams showing their lips, hips, and noses clearly reflected their genetic closeness to apes.
4 years later, our school was integrated.
The only Negro given any attention positively in all of my public school ed was George Washington Carver, and only because all local farmers grew peanuts as crop rotation to enrich the soil, and as a draw for cheap black labor.
The term Negro was replaced by black when I was almost done with college.
There is good reason why old Southern red necks think they are superior.
