03/25 Open Thread - Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade
On 25 March 1807, King George III signed the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade into law, thereby outlawing trading in enslaved people within in the British Empire effective May 1, 1807. This was neither the first nor the last act of some government or another intended to interfere with the trade in or ownership of enslaved persons. However, it was a good thing, as far as it went and was the reason that this date was used for the typically wordy UN International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire killed 146 garment workers on March 25, 1911. It was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in US history (not counting mining disasters) and led to some legislation, improved safety standards, and helped the ILGWU grow. It also had a positive impact on the unionization movement in the US.

Big political
news tomorrow as RFK Jr announces his VP pick. My $ is on Tulsi as she checks so many boxes even as she can be annoying for this lefty with her recent friendly gestures towards the GOP and DJT. But I can't expect perfection or political purity in this pick. Kennedy's VP should be
1) independent minded, not strongly attached to either major party
2) younger, preferably age 40-60 range
3) strong but not too strong personality
4) appeals roughly equally to D and R voters in positions a/o attitude
5) checking the Female box an advantage, maybe a necessity, this cycle, as DJT likely to pick a woman, and there is Biden/Kamala.
6) overall provides good assassination insurance for Kennedy. This would rule out picking someone for unity purposes strongly situated on the right side of the political spectrum.
Not many people out there with these or most of these characteristics, especially with public spotlight experience and also willing to take the job. Moi, I would want him to choose someone with many of those qualities plus, ideally, the high intelligence of someone like his campaign mgr, Amaryllis Kennedy Fox.
Good morning Wokka. Great point about the
assassination insurance, something that a Kennedy would presumably be very cognizant of. The next trick is to keep them from ever being on stage together.

America abstained because it didn’t condemn Hamas. Good lord! But at least it didn’t veto it.
Bibi is pissed that it wasn’t vetted and so he isn’t bring his balls to Washington. If he was already there he would have gathered them up and taken them home.
Now we have to wait and see if Israel will abides by the ruling. I think this gives countries permission to sanction Israel.

Questionable?
The US might claim that, but the real reason could very well be something else, like not pissing off bibi and/or AIPAC, actually wanting to see a complete extermination of Palestinians for assorted reasons, etc. Our stated reason or purpose is, at least half of the time, only ouor real reason by pure coincidence.

One might consider that the slave trade still exists!
It evolved into the situation that the slaves are NATO and the EU and their masters are the US and the WEF
and it is also possible to include Israel.Good afternoon, El, et. al.
A severe storm is coming in a few minutes. Tornado is possible. Hail possible. Hoo, boy!
At least the rest of the week looks like perfect weather.
So, when did ISIS become ISISK? Am I the only one around that missed that?
I am not going to a concert venue any time soon.
Have a great day, EL, and thanks for the OT, as always.

Good morning otc. Good luck with the storm.
I believe that there is now a "Central ISIS" or ISIS mothership, with one or more satellite or branches such as ISIS-K. I got the impression that this happened maybe about the time we bailed on Afghanistan, but that's definitely a WAG.

Hi all, Hey EL!
Bell Labs made that fantastic series of science films we were shown in socialist elementary school in the 1960's. They were cutting edge leaders there at Bell. One actually talked about how CO2 could warm the planet! Imagine!?! I have seen a few or parts of them on youtoob.
I wonder if the Spanish-American War was the first one where the reason and battle cry was a lie: Remember the Maine". Which US "INTEL" claimed was a Spanish bomb, instead of a boiler blowing, which it appears to have been now.
It was followed by Remember the Alamo (but not that the Texans were fighting to maintain slavery), Remember Pearl Harbor (but not that there were ignored warnings), Remember the Gulf of Tonkin (but not that it was clouds we shot at!), Remember the WMD's in Iraq, and now we have Putin's totally unprovoked invasion. Remember Israel's right to self-defense is what we are seeing there. I can't remember 'em all. No 'Remember Nordstream' though. I would love to remember 9/11, but would have to be told the truth for it to be worth it. For now, I hope everyone remembers how the goobermint handled Covid.
I saw Jeff Healey live, ZZ Top had him as their opener on the "Recycler" tour mid-90's or slightly after. Jeff was an amazing guitarist, I was blown away. I think it was BB King that said his intonation was impeccable. BB knew a bit about the subject... And obviously the Rev. Billy G wanted everyone to know this guy.
We are getting the green explosion underway here, some few wildflowers going, but Dakota Verbena which has some pastures in acres of purple. Gnatcatchers just got back, Yellow-throated Vireo and Yellow-throated Warbler singing daily within earshot again. Great to see those neotropical migrants back!
Hope all are well!

Good evening Dysto. The war with Mexico was iffy at best
if you believe nobody knows who shot first, there was still serious provocation, but there is a ton of reason to believe that we did or made it up. The US President wanted a war with Mexico. Polk had even campaigned on expanding the US into California and had tried to buy the Texas-Mexico no man's land, California, and everything from TX to CA. He then sent US troops under Zachary Taylor to the disputed No man's land in south Tejas to create an incident that could be used as a casus belli. Taylor moved his troops up to the very border and trained weapons on at least one Mexican village. Then, one noght, there were shots fired and Polk had his causus belli. It's pretty obvious who fired those shots.

remember the...
I think you are dead0on right on that. And after my post I seem to recall another... "Remember the Little Big Horn", which was taught to me anyway as an unprovoked massacre, which it was not as it turned out. So
there were certainly earlier than 'Remember the Maine' events. They were already developing the art.
Thanks!

The best ever
parody of the Bell Labs film genre is unquestionably "The President's Analyst", 1967, starring James Coburn.
I have to watch it at least once a year, because it is such a gold mine of great lines. My long-suffering wife gets in her car and completely leaves the house while I do so- she can't stand it. But if anyone hasn't seen it, I strongly recommend that they go find it on Hulu, Roku or whatever. It is eerily prescient in so many ways, and dead-nuts hilarious from start to finish.
I use that presidential telephone sound as my phone ringtone to this day.
"Muggers!"

Thanks for that suggestion.

Coburn is
great in this, sending up his own Flynt character. But it is Godfrey Cambridge's immortal portrayal of Don Masters that absolutely steals the show. No wonder that J. Edgar Hoover had the writer blackballed, it being the 60s and all that. You'll have to report back...

thanks UFS
Loved all things Coburn though, those Flynt films were great.
Wasn't Cobunrn the one in Cat Ballou near start where he is passed out drunk on his horse, and he AND the friggin' hourse are leaned up against the side of a barn, the horse leaning too, to keep his rider aboard. The horse knew how to handle this. ROFLMAO
Loved Godfrey Cambridge too...
thanks!

Cat Ballou...
That was Lee Marvin on the horse - his character was Kid Shelleen, if I remember correctly. He ended up buying the horse after the filming was done, as well. But that is one of the finest visual jokes ever...

The storm missed us!
And it is almost closing time, so that's 2 good things.
The courthouse phones and internet is down. I am on the same phone and internet systems, and I am ok. My guess is, Putin is hacking government.
