Stampede!

open thread_99.jpg

The situation in Rafah is tragic and inhumane. Herding people like cattle into, essentially, city size pens and then bombing them until they either stampede into Egypt or perish is the crime of the century.
I don't know the politics of the Egyptian President Sisi, but I would think stampeding people or animals into your country is an act of war.
How this relates to our own southern border were the Mexican Army to stampede the people of various nationalities there into US soil is a big question.
Our government seems to want them here.
Are the Houthis the only people on this planet who have huevos?

A break in the weather here will allow me to get the seed room ready and start germinating some broccoli, onion, and lettuce. I may start some tomatoes just to give them a little head start.
I have a large picture window with a 2 ft ledge facing south in the living room that I can use to move them when they get taller.
Have lots of potatoes left over from last season that are growing out of the boxes. They need to go in the ground real soon.
Question. Does anybody know if you can remove the long "eyes" from the potatoes and still successfully plant them?

stampeding as an act of war, but it is definitely a war crime and a crime against humanity.

Not a farmer at all, but I am largely Irish, if that helps. Not sure wht you mean by 'removing the long "eyes"'- are they the same as ordinary "eyes". I had always heard that they were completely necessary, possibly the germ tissue of the plant. Just to check, I did a quick search which went to the seed savers exchange blog ane found the following

A day or two before planting, use a sharp, clean knife to slice the larger seed potatoes into smaller pieces. Each piece should be approximately 2 inches square, and must contain at least 1 or 2 eyes or buds. Plant smaller potatoes whole.

So pretty sure that they are crucial to the process.

At the present time the eyes are growing out of the box. Some are seven or eight inches long. I have to plant them so far underground or bend them into a spiral to get them under. I'm not sure if I can leave four or five inches of them above ground and still get them to grow properly.
I guess I can experiment, I have three boxes of them, and they are small egg sized whole spuds.
I plant them just the way they are without slicing up.

sticking up out of the soil. After all, iirc, once they sprout and start growing one regularly buries all but the top few leaves anyway, at least for some types.

I think EL is correct. In my fairly long experience with growing potatoes, they will grow along any length of stem, and put out potatoes there. So if you lay the stems on their sides, you might get quite, large, dense plants that way.

One of the best way my husband and I have grown potatoes, and we are going to try it again this year, is in very, very deep beds. The seed potatoes, with sprouts, are put at the very bottom of a hole about 2 feet deep. As they grow, soil is constantly hilled up around them and the hole is eventually filled in. Every foot about the seed potato is full of more potatoes at the end of the season. Mind, potatoes will NOT grow below the seed potato, no matter what kind of planting or hole they are given, although roots will.

I wonder why they didn't go the other way, towards the hill. Probably the utilities got in the way.
While there at the SCMP it clicked on the sub-divided flats into coffin homes also. 2.5 ft by 5.9 ft.is really small, especially for $1300 per month.

concerning Gaza. Thusly showing that they are equally responsible as Israel in the committing of GENOCIDE.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/us-vetoes-un-security-council-resolution-urg...

(Bloomberg) -- The US blocked a United Nations Security Council resolution backing a cease-fire in Gaza as it pushes forward its own efforts to stop an Israeli assault on Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians have sought refuge.

Thirteen of 15 Security Council members voted in favor of the text proposed by Algeria, the only Arab nation currently sitting on the council. The US, which wields veto power, blocked the resolution, and the UK abstained. The draft demanded an immediate humanitarian cease-fire, warned about the forced displacement of Palestinians and called for the release of all hostages.

“The Security Council cannot afford passivity in face of the call for a cease-fire in Gaza,” Amar Bendjama, the Algerian envoy to the UN, said ahead of the vote Tuesday. “Silence and contempt is not a viable option. Now is the time for action and the time for truth.”

The following part is complete balderdash!

The US blocked the resolution after arguing it would interfere with efforts by President Joe Biden and his Qatari and Egyptian counterparts to broker a deal that would lead to the release of hostages held by Hamas, which is designated a terrorist organization by the US and European Union, and boost aid delivery into Gaza. Qatar said over the weekend that those negotiations have stalled.

“Sometimes hard diplomacy takes more time than any of us might like,” US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said before the UN vote. “Any action this council takes right now should help, not hinder, these sensitive and ongoing negotiations. And we believe that the resolution on the table right now would, in fact, negatively impact those negotiations.”

joint G-20 statement?

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/israel-hamas-war-splits-g-20-risking-paralys...

(Bloomberg) -- The Group of 20 nations is so split on the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine that they may be forced to reduce the forum’s scope and avoid geopolitical issues altogether this year, according to people familiar with the matter.

Removing all sensitive political topics from G-20 statements would diminish the relevance of the format, said one of the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. But that would give the group the chance on reaching consensus on other issues.

G-20 foreign ministers will meet in Rio de Janeiro starting Wednesday, when the group is expected to discuss the conflict in the Middle East. Complicating the upcoming gathering is the fact that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva over the weekend compared Israel’s war on Hamas with Adolf Hitler’s extermination of Jews during the Holocaust.

Lula is setting the tone for developing nations since Brazil holds the rotating presidency of the G-20. Several Latin American countries have pulled their ambassadors from Israel, while South Africa has filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide.

The Group of Seven represents the US and its main allies while the G-20 brings together countries from across the spectrum, including China, and so it becomes a focus for global disputes. Israel is not a member of the G-20.

In the run-up to the meeting of foreign ministers — as well as a gathering of the finance ministers next week — officials representing developing nations including South Africa and Brazil have said they want their position that Israel is committing genocide reflected in any joint G-20 statement, according to the people.

That wording has been rejected by several other G-20 nations including the US and Germany, the people said.

Meanwhile, Texas is making headway on the flood of illegals coming through.

I keep hearing about Rafah, but I don't really know what it is, where it is, and just what the story is; it sounds like it's not part of the Gaza Strip, so I am a little confused.
