Open Thread - 1/12/24 - TGIF Stuff 'n' Things

As of the time of this writin' and composin', WWIII has not been declared. Now, I am happy about that, but then, I am not investing in Raytheon, and the like. I do not think I would enjoy the smell of radiation in the morning. I also like people, butterflies, and non-poisonous air and water.

I have not, at time of publishing this OT, read or heard about Israel's response to S. Africa's presentation this morning in the World Court. I hope someone can get us some links to their presentation. Suggestion: I figure MSM will not ignore/bury it, as they did the S.A. 84 page genocide
allegation.

Therefore, easy peasy.

One of my thrills on my trip to South Africa, besides spotting the male lion the guides missed, was an early morning rain, totally unexpected in the dry season.

And now, we turn our attention to politics, which sort of drifts into "I like the grifters who accept bribes in the Blue camp", or "I like the grifters who accept bribes in the Red camp".

Once upon a time, criminals were the heroes of the Little People, criminals who actually made a tiny difference in the lives of the 99%.

My grandparents adored these two "heroes", wished them well, were crushed when there spree ended. The song below is the Rich Man's version, not at ALL what they meant to us. Still, a fun song. The movie was actually good. Remember it? I do.

Other bad asses:

I sent my secretary home today with something for her kids to do to earn a reward.

Instructions: Define the following 10 words. Write a sentence using each word.

All words started with the letter "a". I should get the results from the 9 and 12 yr olds Monday. We shall see. Not sure why I did this, but it brought out the inner teacher in me from days long past. Public ed is just so horrible, it makes me want to do something, for some kid, somewhere. It is always the little things, isn't it?

I have to start pulling together my tax prep stuff for my preparer, and this weekend will be gathering documents, adding up monthly expenses, and feeling like I am being threatened with a whip that didn't remotely show itself to Hunter Biden. Sigh... I am not in the right crowd.

Obviously, this is stuff 'n' things at my acreage in East Texas, by the Sam Houston National Forest, don't get me started on Sam Houston, please. I will give him credit for this:

Now, after gagging on that, how about this?

A song that inspires cooking in my house, like barbecue, like grilled steaks with Mesquite charcoals:

And now you know why, ah haa, even the Rolling Stones knew who was King.

Ok. My brain drivel is not your brain drivel. Yours is likely completely your way, and way more interesting to the c99 crowd than mine, so let 'er rip!

The ruling will be interesting.

Cold weather due here next week too. Not looking forward to it, but it will pass. Will have to mulch and cover winter crops to survive the 11F predicted Wed. AM. Managed to get them through 5F last year so hopefully not wasted effort.

Well, onward through the fog. Thanks for the OT, and hope everyone has a great MLK weekend!

Is Friday a religious rite? Maybe for the 9 to 5'ers in the world.
Per Texas Bush: "Is our children learning?" Therefore all

Went to the cookbook club last night. It was soup themed.
Several good ones. I made a cornbread from scratch instead.

Thanks for the tunes and OT OtC!

@QMS fun and frolic for we working stiffs.
Ah, soup. Growing up, we ate almost no soup. Dad just couldn't choke it down. It brought back horrible memories of his childhood when "soup" was some vegetable and some little clump of meat in a pot of boiling water. It was never enough. He spent his first 15 years of life not knowing what it felt like to be full. When I eat soup, it is like eating exotic cuisine.
I called Dear One Wednesday afternoon to see if he had decided to make my cornbread from scratch or a package. I reminded him it was in the vows, on page 7. He said page 7 was missing. I reminded him I have a copy. He declared he was on strike, although he could not cite what page gave him that right.
Have some fun this weekend, friend!

@on the cusp My mother made a number of soups. In particular I remember beet soup (not borsch per se) and cabbage soup. If times were good, meat on the side. But always lots of buttered "black bread" for dipping into the broth. If hamburger was available stuffed cabbage with rice stuffing and meat spread in. My mother was a genius of simplicity in cooking. I used to buy a lot of spices for my own cooking. Eventually, got rid of them and just now use only salt and pepper. That is all my mother used.

Like Mr. Webster, soup was always reflected in the relative wealth of
the time. During periods of poverty, thin soup was like mana from heaven.
Whenever there was spare change, a sausage or an apple would show-up.

Chicken based, good for a cold. Favorite was the split pea with ham.

I do not remember Mom making any soup other than chicken and vegetables, or chicken and rice, or chicken and noodles. I like chicken and veggie in a heavy cream base. Seems if it isn't fattening, I don't make it!
During the hard times, I have eaten a can of pork and beans with a piece of toast, feeling thrilled to have it on hand. I hope I and all of us here never reach that level of food insecurity. When we were young, we could handle it. It would be very difficult now.

I remember wondering if Lira was the real deal. How did he last as long as he did speaking out against the Ukraine government? How is it he disappeared for several days, then was allowed to continue his criticisms? Well, I was mistaken. His death proves me wrong.
He apparently died a horrid, painful death.
May he rest in peace.

BREAKING: It is with great sadness I must announce that Gonzalo Lira
@GonzaloLira1968
, passed away in a hospital according to his father, who has been fighting to get his son much-needed medical attention for the past weeks.

Here is a hand-written note from Gonzalo which I received on January 4: "I have had double pneumonia (both lungs) as well as pneumothorax and a very severe case of edema (swelling of the body). All this started in mid-October, but was ignored by the prison. They only admitted I had pneumonia at a Dec. 22 hearing. I am about to have a procedure to reduce the edema pressure in my lungs, which is causing me extreme shortness of breath, to the point of passing out after minimal activity, or even just talking for 2 minutes."

"I cannot accept the way my son has died. He was tortured, extorted, incommunicado for 8 months and 11 days and the US Embassy did nothing to help my son. The responsibility of this tragedy is the dictator Zelensky with the concurrence of a senile American President, Joe Biden," Gonzalo's father wrote.

I can find no words.

In a previous post, I suggested that RFK Jr. was like a character in Star Wars named "Maul." Here's what I said:

He sounds educated and convincing and he's certainly capable of expressing some truths ignored by others, but he's gone over to the Dark Side. The end-result is that he will cause a lot of chaos. That is what he, like "Maul," is good for. The real question about RFK Jr.'s candidacy is one of whether anything of value will arise out of the chaos he causes.

So, anyway, here's the RFK Jr. skinny, from Max Blumenthal:

The clip below is from the amazing Season 7 of the cartoon series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." Star Wars was a lot of fun before Disney ruined it. Anyway, here's Maul, the villain, trying unsuccessfully to cure Ahsoka Tano of her naivete by telling her the real story. He's like RFK Jr. in this regard -- tells important truths but is generally wedded to evil:

@on the cusp -- means that we will see him on ballots. This is, indeed, Cornel West's problem. I'd be surprised if I saw him on my Oregon November ballot.

As I've also said before, RFK Jr. is a chaos agent. The Democrats are deluded fools to think that campaigning for Joe Biden's re-election is any sort of move toward "normalcy." It's in line with their Trump Derangement Syndrome, their falling in line with the Blinken/ Nuland/ Sullivan/ Austin delusions about Ukraine and/or China, and (going back) their belief in Russiagate and their belief that nothing could be done about the obstinacy of Manchin/ Synema in blocking Build Back Better. Like I showed in 2020, their mythology is easy to expose. I'm surprised I haven't seen it yet in this election cycle. The godlike Left, you see, will singlehandedly re-elect Joe Biden to save the world from Hitler Two, who is Trump.

The big difference this year is that large chunks of the electorate are losing their faith in this mythology. And RFK Jr. is running. So we will have chaos.

@Cassiodorus RFK Jr. is capable of causing much chaos. His views are shifting toward status quo with each passing day. As an example, his initial idea to disband the CIA has shaped up as a plan to break it up and compartmentalize it.
Some political analyst I watched this week, and I have no idea who it was now, suggested he was more likely to peel off Republican voters from Trump, than Dem voters from Biden.
West does not have the capital or the organization to get his name on ballots. He is a brilliant man, I take nothing away from his exemplary accomplishments as an intellectual, but when it comes to politics, he is very uniformed or ill informed. He needed help, and he got none.

@on the cusp why anyone would vote for Genocide Joe at this point unless they had a bad case of Trump Derangement Syndrome or were so old they received their information from TV news or print newspapers. So while RFK Jr. "takes votes away" from Trump, Biden "takes votes away" from Biden. And then you have Trump's impending prosecution.

"there's something so especially sadistic about waving the flag of a country that you're actively destroying" -- Aaron Mate

@Cassiodorus is the easy explanation, but digging deeper for real reasons to vote blue no matter who is very difficult, with machinations hidden from the voters, everything done behind closed doors and kept hush hush.
When I was young, Rs were a minority. Consequently, primaries were chock full of candidates, Ds fought it out, and voters had the chance to present the best D on the ballot.
Nowadays, a person challenging the DNC choice is considered to be some agent or plant trying to get a nomination for the single purpose of disuniting the D party. It shows weakness and dissension in the ranks, so let's just make it easy and normal for a committee to do the selecting for the party.
The prosecution of Trump is a display of prosecutorial corruption. It is going to backfire, and tends to encourage some people to give him support for that reason, only.
