Biden news 1/8/2024
Okay so there have been a lot of commentaries upon this Biden speech. Here I'm going to post Glenn Greenwald's speech. Greenwald gets to the heart of Biden's adornment of a simple argument: Trump bad, me good.
Generally I like Greenwald's solid tone and tendency not to let the Joe Biden clips go on for too long. Here are a couple of responses, though, to Greenwald's response.
1) It would be a great exaggeration to say that the economy is "in shambles." The economy, it would seem, is protected by an amazing alibi -- the economic statistics look good. The problem with the economy, as I've said repeatedly, is that the share of the surplus going to the working class is not a good one.
2) I have to say that the people I read who don't like Joe Biden tend to minimize the case against Donald Trump. Some of them, perhaps, would like to see Trump back in the White House. (Paul Street is not one of those.) Perhaps Glenn Greenwald doesn't do that; I don't know. It nonetheless seems likely that Trump is (also) doomed. This video is from three months ago:
Meanwhile the pseudo-conservative media have made a big to-do about Jill Biden helping Joe offstage after the speech.
At any rate, it should prompt everyone to ask why Joe Biden's speech was directed at Trump to the exclusion of the rest of the Republican Party. Patrick Martin has an answer for this question: Joe Biden's allegiance is to the whole of the ruling class, not just the Democratic Party part of it.
Supposedly it is big news that Biden wasn’t aware for days that Defense Secretary Austin was hospitalized. I do not know why. Simplicius the Thinker wants to speculate on what is really going on. Here are Simplicius' words:
The United States of America, at a time of historic international upheaval and danger to ‘American interests’ abroad, was functionally without a Secretary of Defense for almost a week without the commander-in-chief’s knowledge. Some assumed Austen’s deputy Kathleen Hicks would take over—except she was on ‘vacation’ in Puerto Rico at the time. How convenient!
It ties into the Israeli situation because rumors have it disgruntled White House staffers were responsible for hiding the information from Biden over his contentious stance on Palestine—another case of open rebellion, if true. It once more highlights the deepening rifts within the Biden administration.
Or so the rumors have it.
The Governor of Massachusetts is in New Hampshire stumping for Joe Biden, who is not on the ballot in New Hampshire. Will Joe Biden try to win as a write-in candidate? I thought the DNC was going to de-platform the NH delegates.
At the event, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said the president's accomplishments over the past four years speak for themselves.
Biden's accomplishments speak for themselves. But what do they say?
And I guess Jim Clyburn is concerned about the re-election campaign. And Obama is worried. It doesn't look surprising.
EXTRA: There's a "human interest story" in The Guardian, posted yesterday, titled "Young voters helped Biden to victory. They may abandon him this year." They interviewed "climate activists" for this article. I can't really say, myself, that comparing Establishment candidates for President has anything to do with mitigating climate change. You need a revolution to mitigate climate change.

"Joe Biden's allegiance is to the whole of the ruling class,
not just the Democratic Party part of it." So true. Also, how many upper income "liberals" benefit from republican tax cuts and incentives? So they have their pet causes but when it comes to getting the rest of us a fair shake....nope! I mean, ever listen to NPR lately? OMG! The Radical Far Left!
Biden's cognitive ability
Read an article this morning about how Biden is a superager. How he does not seem to have the physical and mental problems of most elderly people. All I can say is this article was written by someone who has never worked with the elderly population.
I do not claim to be an expert, but I know that when someone can barely talk or walk that they are not a superager. There are enough old clips of Biden that you can see both the physical and mental decline from as early as 10 years ago.
If you want to see people who have aged well, look at clips of old Rock musicians who haven't died. They are articulate as can be.
Thanks Enchantress!

Lol…
Trump on Biden’s cognitive ability.
I wonder what drugs they give Biden and how they are still working for him. And what do they tell him they are so he keeps taking them? "Here are your vitamins, Joe."
There were problems with running a campaign of Joy while committing a genocide? Who could have guessed?
Harris is unburdened of speaking going forward.
Will the old memes work? or war a better strategy
It seems the Jan6th narrative still works with the party bubble but can it work with anybody else? Not sure it can at this point in the timeline.
My speculation is that Biden will start a war with Iran to become a "war president" who cannot be removed because something something Putin and China will take over Hooterville. The pundits I read seem to think Biden will avoid a war with Iran. Israel sure wants it.
War it is. Big war.
Just an BTW looks like the Hooties have cut down Red Sea cargo traffic by a whooping 95% according to some sources (of course forgot to bookmark them). The shipping companies don't seem to believe that the US can protect them. Why gamble it with billions on the line.
Also read where US and Nordics worried about Russia paving the way for expansion of Arctic for especially shortened trade route for Asia given problems in Red Sea and water problems in Panama. Russia has like 36 ice breakers needed to tame the area. US has two. One is in maintenance and other is almost retired. But the major point is that the US has lost the knowledge, skill, humans, and toolsets to create thick harden curved steel hulls needed for the breakers. Also read where the US cannot maintain the Minutemen nukes as they are old and blueprints lost, no parts, and all the people who knew how to maintain them died of old age. My dead brother who was a master machinist (thank you unions) probably turning in his urn.
Moar war is what the US stands for
I really hope the 'big war' doesn't come to pass.
They are desperate, maybe insane?
Simplicus had an opinion on this matter the other day.
It's probably off-topic

Interesting quote:
"I don't understand, frankly, how someone in a think tank, who actually doesn't have their hands on the missile looking at the parts, the cables, all of the pieces inside" can make judgments on the way forward, he said.
The symbol-manipulating class versus the classes who actually
touch, move, and modify matter with tools and hands … or plough and seed the earth and grow crops?
> someone in a think tank
This week in Germany there are nationwide demonstrations by the farmers, plus some of the truck drivers and master craftsmen, protesting government policies that they say are economically bleeding the productive classes in favor of the symbol-manipulating academic and technocrat class (which latter is also the class pushing both “green” / “woke” programs and war in Ukraine & Gaza, as contradictory as that may seem).
