Good Things:

A Wild, Disabled, but Fully Competent, Fox!
Even disabled wild animals sometimes do well. I have saved this clip from the BBC for a while. Basically, I put it into my bookmarks and then forgot it Wink . So now, I'm posting it to start this Thursday's Open Thread. A two legged fox appeared in a couple's garden in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, and was filmed! It appears to be very healthy; it was eating fine, hopping and running. Go fox!

A Picture of the Fox: From an article at the Daily Mail.

Another BBC story featured what a wildlife expert has to say about the fox. The expert, Mike Dilger, reckons the fox was born without its hind legs and just learned to live how it has to live. Dilger said, "The fact it's looking so confident and so able tells me it's probably happened from birth. It's an amazing survivalist story."

The story went viral around the UK. Here's one about the fox from a local news site. And another article from the Daily Mail, with comments by the couple who took the video.

Some Good Climate Change News
As we all know, climate change (I often call it climate catastrophe now) is here and definitely active. What the powers that be will forecefully do about it, if anything, is... I dunno. I just dunno. It's very negative, isn't it? Maybe recycling isn't enough? Maybe promising to make some changes in the future, maybe... wait, the politician says, 'Ohh, hi, big oil guy with tons of money, come on in and have a wildlife area, or a park, to drill and exploit!' Yea, I don't think it's gonna work. Or, the supposed energy (meaning petroleum and gas) experts come up with ideas that seem good, but aren't really, like Direct Air Capture, which emits more greenhouse gases than it captures, costs huge amounts for small results, and more... but we get to use oil products!

But, there is still a bit of good news about the changes that need to happen, and how they are progressing. Bill McKibben talked recently about some good news in his weekly summary of what's going on concerning the climate entitled 'Energy from Heaven'.

Basically the price of solar is falling rapidly. I've noticed this myself. A week or two ago I did a quick online search for prices for solar panel/power installation in my area. The prices have dropped by 5 to 10k since I last did such a search a few years ago. It's awesome. I can almost afford to install solar now Smile .

Renewable energy is now almost all of the growth in energy supply. This is good. As McKibben writes (from above article linked article, 'Energy from Heaven'):

You can see this beginning to emerge already. A report out this week from the climate think tank Ember predicted that “carbon emissions from the global electricity sector may peak this year, after plateauing in the first half of 2023, because of a surge in wind and solar power.” That is remarkably good news: in fact, the “new report on global electricity generation found that the growth of renewables was so rapid that it was close to the incredibly fast rate required if the world is to hit the tripling of capacity by the end of the decade that experts believe is necessary to stay on the 1.5C pathway.” Read that again if you need a shot of anti-despair.

More Sycamore Gap Tree
And finally, perhaps my last posting about the Sycamore Gap tree (and perhaps not!). Here's some little kids in northern England reciting a poem about the tree. It's very cute, sad and uplifting all at the same time.

So, thanks for reading my meanderings and here's the open thread - and remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

Hello, hello! It's raining here in the early hours of Thursday. Which is good, I think. We've had frost for the last 4 or 5 days, which is also good, and late. But now it's warmed up and there's rain. Plants are happy. Here we are having a family 'dinner' (really a late lunch) day. I am making Thai peanut chicken, but, with peanut sauce and cashews instead of whole peanuts, and lots and lots of vegetables. Why? 'Cause I'm weird that way (I adore cashews... and vegetables!).

Hope everyone is doing well. Please post what's going on with you and/or what you're learning about lately!

for home based electrical use. There are still many technical issues involved
such as restrictions on rebates, permitting processes, trade restrictions
which could benefit by state / fed supportive policies. But lowering initial cost
is a big step in the right direction.

Your links to the fox articles begs an update on the old saying
clever like a (two legged) fox. Wink

Read an essay this morning about an amazing progressive organizer
who has left us in a stronger position in many important areas.

After a diagnosis with ALS, Ady Barkan immersed himself in efforts
to sink the Trump tax cuts and later, to adopt Medicare for All.

An inspiring individual.

I like that!

Much more needs to be done to make renewables for home use really possible. If its done, and the electric companies become more battery bank companies, that would rock. It'll take the government, even if only 'just local' ones, though. Sad

I'm very sorry about Ady Barkan. I've been expecting his passing, just... well, like always, I kept telling myself, 'Not yet, he's got another day!'. I started following him and his journey back in 2017 or so. His story is very inspiring and the work he did was so good. Now, how to make his goals happen, like medicare for all?

Reading this thread this morning was a much needed antidote to all the other news I have been reading. Loved the two legged fox! Reminds me not to feel so sorry for myself when things are not going the way I want them to.

Thanks to you and QMS who has already responded to this thread to put my day in a better frame of reference. Reading a book right now, “Of Time and Turtles” Mending the world, shell by shattered shell. Fascinating and hopeful at the same time.

Your Thai peanut chicken sounded great. Always looking for fresh recipe ideas. Have a great rest of your day.

worked for you. It has for me too. Reading about wars, while very important, is very depressing. Same with much of the other crappy stuff going on (like the economy).

I looked up the book, 'Of Time and Turtles' on goodreads. It sounds good, so now I have another thing to read. Thank you!

So Thai Peanut Chicken: Here's an easy way to make it:
Cut some raw chicken breast (about one breast per two people) into bite sized chunks. The chunks should be a bit larger than whole cashews.

Start heating a wok or frying pan - add about 1 1/2 tsp peanut oil, and about the same or up to twice as much soy sauce, per chicken breast. Heat the oil and sauce and then add the chicken breast. Add about one handful of roasted cashews (just salted, no spice) per chicken breast. Then add about 1/2 to 1 tsp of thai red curry paste per chicken breast. Stir it all a lot and often and let the chicken cook almost completely.

Once the chicken is almost cooked I add vegetables, frozen or fresh. I use cabbage (sliced), green beans, squash (yes, zucchini!), broccoli, cauliflower, whatever. Cook the chicken and veggies, until the veggies are done. Might have to cover the pan a bit so it doesn't get burnt. The chicken will be completely done by then. If there's 'water' in the bottom of the pan, let it boil until it's almost gone.

Then add the peanut sauce. When I'm in a hurry I just buy a box of dried peanut sauce and some coconut milk in a can. I add the coconut milk to the chicken mixture, then add the dried packet of sauce (for two people it's about 1/2 a can of coconut milk and one packet of the two packet box of dried peanut sauce). Mix it all up, and cook until the sauce is hot, about 2 minutes or so. And then serve with rice or noodles.

I should note I never ever make a two person amount, I always do four. This is because hubby and I love the left overs! The left overs store well in the fridge and cook up great.

When I've got time, I make fresh peanut sauce. It's basically peanut butter, coconut milk, spices... So, not hard.

I dressed accordingly, and the wool plaid jacket I am wearing brought back a lovely memory.
I have a dress code when appearing in court. Remember dress codes? Not even doctors have them now, but we are subject to being held in contempt of court for dropping the dress code ball. Consequently, I have packed my closets full of classic wool jackets. They never go out of style, decade after decade.
So, the memory: about 15 years ago, I went on a spur of the moment tour of Ireland. A friend supplied free airfare. We joined a tour group, visited the country for 11 days. A highlight of the tour was a trip to a wool factory, famous for making custom wool clothing. We heard the lecture, then got turned loose to shop. The factory spokesman walked up to me, asked to feel of my jacket sleeve, the one I am wearing right now. He commented, "That's a very nice jacket." I thanked him, didn't mention I had bought it at a resale clothing event to raise money for the local public library. I paid $5 for it, tipped another $5.
It is nice to read some good news for a change, isn't it? The fox is inspiring. We can overcome most anything if we are determined!
Thanks for the OT, Sima!

I have a blanket something like that. I got it at a charity shop in Scotland, used, old, wool. Very very nice. It cost like 5 pounds, 10$ at the time. It's still one of the basic blankets we use at home, 30 years later!
I would have trouble with dress codes. Or, maybe not. Can one be a Goth lawyer, or a Johnny Cash one, and just wear black? I could do that easy! Have a great weekend!

good bright cheery news, but I'm sure I can if I try.

Hey, somebody realized that bird names celebrate what they're named after, like RED tailed Hawks Celebrate RED and Red Winged blackbirds Celebrate either Red Wing shoes and boots or Red Wing Pottery. Well, maybe not quite. They did decide that birds' names that involve people's names Celebrate those people, like Steller's Jay Celebrates the explorer Steller, and Anna's Hummingbird Celebrates Anna, whomever he or she was. Accordingly, all such birds are going to be renamed to things that will celebrate the birds themselves. I shit you not. The good news? Well, there are still preposterously silly people out there, ain't that good news?

Are they really gonna rename birds? Really? So it's gonna be like this, 'Blblbehewrewrwou Hummingbird (once known as Anna's Hummingbird)' like all the news channels do with tweets: 'X (once known as Twitter)'. People are insane! I'm flabbergasted, and amused too! Thanks for that Smile And no, I'm not gonna start calling these birds by their new names, heh. Maybe the next generation can do that.

Is kinda like this. But, it doesn't hurt as bad, generally, to fall down if one trips on a grass hummock and falls into the pasture around. I once carried a long stick to gently guide all the goats into the pasture or out a gate or whatever, now I carry it as a walking stick!
