Provided you apply 60 days in advance, fill out the proper forms, in triplicate, have them notarized, and then faxed to the relevant supervisory office...and once it is approved by the governing authority by a two thirds majority, except on Tuesday, when you need only 50% +1, provided there is a legal quorum present at the meeting. Then, once you have the properly annotated permit, you must stand in the designated location, surrounded by fences, and far from the eyes of any authority that might be offended by your message, which of course also must be pre-approved. Any and all participants are subject to arrest if they stray from the designated area, yell too loud, wear inappropriate clothing, have too dark a shade of skin, make eye contact with any law enforcement personnel, or just simply look like they need a beating/groping by said personnel. protests in Paris and all over France, saying I wished the Democracy Spring Sit-ins would be comparable to those.
I wonder why that never happens here in the US and thought it must have something to do with the American gun culture. I guess here everybody is afraid to get shot by their own people, while in France people have no such fears and just protest no matter what.
Demos on the Mall and in front of the WH, Congress or Supreme Court are all
"managed". Nothing like people coming spontaneously, seldom anything more than the OWS camp-ins, which were great, but still not large in numbers.
to protests in US America are trained using films of Vietnam protests, engendering a fear of crowd activity.
I have not seen the French protests, so will have to go check it out to get a better understanding of your point.

The march started in Philadephia and this video was made when the marchers arrived in Baltimore. Sunday night they were in my neighborhood. The Real News Network had a live coverage to which I linked in today's OT.
