Open Thread WE 13 SEP 23 ~ beauty outside of politics
“If you want to see a better world, change the lens through which you see it and do the work to make it better.”
― Jeffrey G. Duartend
In spite of the propaganda machine's attempt to portray "the enemy" as evil in a slanted
perspective, there is beauty, culture and custom which exist in these countries.
A few examples ..
Russia - Ruskeala National Park, Karelia. It is an amazing combination of marble mountains, turquoise lakes, and lush greenery.
~
Syria- Lattakia is a city extending back to Ancient Greek times, and continues to be an important commercial port for Syria today.
~
China - In the 13th century, Marco Polo described Hangzhou as "the city of heaven" and "the finest and most splendid city in the world".
~
North Korea - Changbai Mountains is a chain of beautiful mountains located between North Korea and China border.
A musical interlude ...
and a mellower version ..
With this being an open thread, pull any strings you find of interest to share

Good morning
Oh my. The calendar reads National Defy Superstition Day and
Supernatural Day. Better cross your fingers and toes!
On this day in history ..

the fury of nature
Good morning...
Got the muscadines in a must. Next week I'll filter and set up for fermentation.
Got another 0.1" last night. This time of year I'm grateful for any rain. Looks like our TX friends should get some decent rain this week. I still need to mow the trails this week. Always something, but it keeps things interesting.
I appreciate today's OT and it's positive look at our so called enemies. TPTB sure have been working hard to gin up more China hate. They were very successful using Russiagate to do so with Russia in prep for the Ukraine proxy war. It is what it is. As you suggest it is important to see the natural beauty around us and the world.
Take care!

Muscadine grapes, native to the southeastern United States, aren't much like the green and red grapes you typically see in the produce aisle, sometimes called "scuppernongs".
The "mighty muscadine," as it is sometimes called, offers some impressive health benefits.
Sounds good!

Good morning QMS. I hope you realize that those
are all propaganda pictures. We have our own special, exceptional beauty, like the White Sands National Monument.
be well and have a good one

Beautiful sandscape
Is that near the exceptional nuclear testing grounds?
I think it is the exceptional nuclear testing grounds, n/t

It might rain today
and it will rain tomorrow for sure.
Looks like Dear One will get to mow a few acres at least once more for the year.
Muscadines grow around here like weeds. I have them all over my yard and office fences. The birds see to it that I never get an actual grape. They beat me to it.

Great photo of Baektusan/ Changbai Mountain
I have another-
President Moon Jae-in of South Korea and Kim Jong-un at Baektusan in September 2018 during their summit. South Koreans in recent history must visit from the Chinese side.
(Source-AP youtube)
Probably considered anti-state propaganda now. Why can't we live together?
Wikipedia has a good write up on Baektusan/Changbai Mountain. The crater lake is known as Heaven Lake 天池 in both Chinese and Korean. The mountain is part of the founding myth of ancient Korea, and incorporated into North Korean political mythology as well. The Kim Il-sung blood line is known as the Baektusan bloodline. Oops sorry politics.

Sade is great! For some reason without thinking about it, her music reminded me of my limited experiences in the Caribbean region. I didn't know Sade was English/Nigerian.
One of my favorite past times is to watch Kdrama historical (fiction) dramas when they become available in the US. There is a new one labeled "My Dearist" in English ( 연인 ). Yesterday we watched Episode 2. It had this song in it that I really like, Just in My Heart. It's contemporary, the original singer is Kai. I found trying to interpret it was quite difficult. I spent hours on it, I guess because it is like poetry, and some translation into English tends to sound quite awkward. The drama portrays life in 17th Century Chosun during the reign of King Injo. Love this excerpt from episode two, where the yangban class young lady from the country dresses as a male to accompany her worldly male companion, an itinerant trader to a giseng house for entertainment in Hwangseong (now Seoul).
“내 태어나서 이런 귀 호강은 처음입니다!” Since I was born the most pleasant sound I have ever heard! 김윤우의 노래에 감동받은 안은진, Ahn Eun-jin moved by Kim Yoon-woo's song MBC 230805 방송
My interpretation- fwiw

QMS,
That is one of the cleverest pieces of art you have posted! Fascinating what artists "see".
Hoppy update: Dear One caught sight of her yesterday. After she ate, drank, hopped around, she flew off, very low, then she flew upwards and landed on a tree limb. We think her life was officially saved by his efforts.
Hope you are doing well, coping with whatever twists and turns life has put upon you.
Thanks for the OT, my friend.

Thanks otc
glad hoppy survived the ordeal. Doing the boat scramble in prep for hurricane Lee.
Batten down the hatches and hoist up the landlubbers, there is a storm a-brewin'.
When is that hurricane gonna make landfall?
Make sure the boat insurance premiums are current!

The latest projection has it slightly missing us
and has calmed down somewhat to 105 knot winds
taking like a freight train, due to arrive around Saturday
imagine we will get some of its fury, tho not the full monty?
Local forecasts are 40-50 mph winds, west - northwest
so the surf should get knocked down, but the swells ..
Well, the bullet dodged...
A couple of years ago, we were headed to Colorado, stopped at a convenience store to get a snack and some gas. A few hours drive from Amarillo. I opened the store's front door, and a 50 mph wind gust slammed it open and shut, and it almost knocked me down, and the door cut my arm. I went inside, bleeding profusely, asked the cashier if she had a first aid kit. She ran to the shelves, got some alcohol and band aids off the shelf, opened them up and helped me. Crazy!
So, those winds can be dangerous, depending on where you are and what you are doing.
I always suggest stocking up on your preferred booze, sitting inside, thinking deep thoughts, washing them down.
