OT, as in off-theme

Since I’m not a phone person I could use some help/recommendation.
Before I travel overseas to spend time with my daughter and her family I want to replace my 2012 iPhone. I would like to replace it with a refurbished one that has a better camera. I realise that the best cameras are the newest and 'pro' ones, but I just want one good enough to record special moments with loved ones, and unexpected encounters.
I welcome any ideas and experiences.

The iPhone 8 is one that I began my consideration of. I will consider it further.
This is a good website for gathering information concerning
phones from various manufacturers, it offers reviews which includes camera features. It also has information about older models that might be in your price range.

Thank you for the website humphrey
I will look at it closely tomorrow with a clearer head. My good friend and wonderful photographer has always used a Samsung phone camera for her work when not using her 'official' camera gear, and produces amazing work with it. The problem for me is that since the beginning I have only worked with apple products and wonder whether I could adjust and get comfortable with another format. Maybe it's time to risk a try?
Here is a link to the iPhone 8 review.

Personally I use a Samsung A71 (more so for the larger screen size) that has good camera features. As far as switching phone manufacturers they operate basically the same not really a difficult learning curve.
Thanks for the review
and the casual confidence regarding switching formats. I will definitely consider the advantage of screen size. I never heard of Bezel before, but it must make a difference in viewing.
My Samsung 7 galaxy phone camera sucked bigly
It tinted too yellow but other than that it was decent for sharpness. I have an iPhone 13 Pro and some times I think the pictures look grainy because they are so sharp. I’d rather use my 10 mp camera but the battery won’t stay charged.
Apple offers refurbished iPhones. I’d check them out.
You gonna swing by Utah while you’re here? Sam is dying to meet you.

Tell Sam I feel the same, and give her a big hug from me
Unfortunately, I'm traveling to a different continent in November. I'd like though to visit my sister in Washington state if possible next summer. Maybe we can meet somewhere in-between?
Thank you for your experience regarding the ultra sharpness of some digital cameras. I can understand the issue of it translating as too grainy.
I have been a Mac user my whole life
and only got the galaxy because I couldn’t afford the extra monthly $$$ for the iPhone. I detest android and PC products and I don’t think you would be happy with one. I’d suggest finding an apple phone that fits your needs instead of settling for an android. You can work around the grainy photos and I’m quite happy with my phone.
As for meeting somewhere it depends on gas prices. I have to say that I’m royally pissed that they went up so much just as I got my trailer. I had plans to do a lot of traveling through the states, but it’s just too gd expensive right now.

Thanks for your clear statement and experience
Idaho is not that far, and I've never been there. But if there was one state I'd easily want to revisit, it would be Utah.
Idaho is a pretty state too
I spent a lot of time there until I moved to California and just haven’t been back. The sawtooth mountains are awesome and the lake up near the top. Cour D lane which I’m not spelling right.
Another thing to think about is security and apps. I don’t have to give apps access to my phone like I did with android. They might have done it anyway who knows but I at least didn’t give permission.

Thank you guys for the input
Rather than being confusing by individual and varying experiences, it's been very helpful in my effort to consolidate knowledge with what is potentially a good fit for me.
Hi Janis, a little late but a year of travel has
helped clarify our phone situation. We started out all Mac/Apple phones and computers. Then my iPhone failed just out of warranty (I swear it's a thing). Android maker One Plus here in Europe was offering new phones at under 200 euros. We bought one.
I adjusted in about two weeks. Tried to convince mon mari that it was worth the change, but he was skeptical and replaced his iPhone with an iPhone 8 which failed almost immediately. More phone drama later, he eventually got another.
Here's his write up for you...
Before mon mari, I was married to a pirate who just happened to be a Brooks graduate landscape nature and small product commercial photographer. I learned so much about looking for shots and composition by osmosis rather than book or school learning. Really love analog photography. Digital is so thin.
Anyway, pretty picky about color fidelity, composition, perspective. These Androids are surprisingly good photo takers. They are just slightly wider than 55. But Have enough options for shooting that control is possible. The one thing is the auto focus on front of camera or only on the background. Easily by-passed by pre focusing on something in the background to get all focal lengths. Once that is automatic, most images are sharp.
I hope this helps in your decisions. Jumping away from a known format is so hard to contemplate. I always so enjoy your photos, compositions and narrations. You inspired me to look at beach sand on the Atlantic coast, and saw much more than I would have. Small scale things can be so interesting; patterns in nature can be so, so beautiful.

Hi Dawn
Thank you and your Mari for relating you experience with phone cameras. I am very happy to see you and your comment here. So, you’ve been travelling. I hope it has been rewarding. I've wondered about you both and how you are faring. I hope your house and health problems are resolving themselves, and you are finding more comfort.
I will definitely take your experience with apple products into consideration. So far, it seems like the possibilities here are mostly limited to apple and samsung. There are a few other minor choices, but I'm not confident there is the support or repair possibilities available here.
Please let me know, privately if preferred, how you both are.
All the best, and thank you again.
Hey Janis good to be home.
It's a long story, but upshot is one thing after another with our house and health, we slowly uncovered lots of toxins and almost lost our health trying to stay on. We have learned so much about how we humans build systems that in the end create dangerous environments for ourselves and other species on the planet. We ran from a place we love.
We don't know if we can stay even with a year of absence and leaving everything to mellow out.
More on all that later.
I found a provider named Dick Smith in NZ. Has had PlusOne phones in the past, but not sure about these days. Sounds like island remoteness has some deficits for available products.

Best of luck.
So good to be seen

Hi Dawn
I can imagine how painful it might be to leave a home that you love because of the risks it presents. I hope you and your home find a way to accommodate each other. If not, I hope you find a better way.
Have you considered Motorola
I'm not a fan of either Apple or Samsung products so when it comes to phones I've always used Motorola phones. They do everything the others do at a fraction of the cost. I'm currently using the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G. $299 at Bestbuy.

Hi Social
Thanks for the suggestion. I will check out Motorola phones more closely. From a quick look they seem like a fairly rare product here.
