Open Thread - Thurs 27 July 2023: Plennie Wingo... Who?

Plennie Wingo - Who's That?

I was reading an article by Matt Taibbi the other day, and he mentioned someone I'd never heard of. The person's name, alone, was intriguing - Plennie Wingo. Who the heck was Plennie Wingo? Maybe you know if you are from Texas, or like 'modern' history, or the Guinness Book of World Records, or listen to Dave Anthony podcasts ( Plennie Wingo | The Dollop Episode #493!)... but, I don't fit super well in any of those categories but the history one, so I didn't know who Plennie Wingo was.

Plennie Wingo Walking Backwards. Check out those backwards mirrored glasses! (from Texas Monthly, Sept 2018)

So I looked him up. WOW. WOW! He walked from Texas to Turkey, backwards. And then did the same from California to Texas after coming back to the USA on a boat from Turkey and hitchhiking to CA. He did all this in 1931-32. A book was written about him by Ben Montgomery in 2018, called The Man Who Walked Backward (Excerpt from the book in Texas Monthly). I'm getting this from ILL and gonna read it, as well as Plennie's own book about his walking (Around the World Backwards). What a weird, strange, and potentially satisfying accomplishment. His story is one of doing well before the Great Depression, then basically having nothing and just deciding to do something after his daughter and her friends were chatting and said that all the strange things have been done already, like sitting on flag poles, and so on. And he basically said all the strange things hadn't been done yet, and resolved to walk backwards around the world.

So, in 1976, when Wingo was 81, he walked across the width of California, selling postcards for a dollar. My father was/is not as 'strange' as this, but it does remind me of my Dad, riding his bike from Lake Tahoe to Utah when he was 82. His dementia made bike riding impossible in the years since then (he's 88 now), but Dad's still here and he enjoyed my telling him the story of Plennie Wingo, as much as he possibly could!

Ohh, and for those, and there are many and they do have a right to say this, but for those who think Plennie was stupid and what he did was dumb, here's Matt Taibbi's take on that (from the article linked above):

I mentioned this (Plennie Wingo) once to a friend who asked me, “Why would he do that?” I scrunched up my nose. “What do you mean, why? Because!” That’s what we Americans do. It’s why for every fifty idiots who leaped to their deaths off cliffs flapping homemade wings, we had one Wright Brothers. That’s how this country has always worked. The line between outpatient and inventor here is and always has been thin, as is the line between con artist and marketing genius, as PT Barnum discovered. Outlandishness, difference, boldness. We’ve celebrated that from Patrick Henry to Hunter Thompson to Liberace. The freethinker was always a cherished archetype.

So, thanks for reading a little about Plennie Wingo and here's the open thread - and remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

Hope it is going well for everyone. Today is gutter cleaning and roof anti-moss treatment day. Ohh boy! And the usual garden work, etc.

The YardRock's campaign is going well. Here's a bit Lee Camp did about a poll he posted on the Tweet/Twitter/X/what the heck is it now? The Rock beats Trump and Biden, hands down (but the Rock doesn't have a hand!?)!

Have a great day, and post whatever in the comments. We wanna read it!

Today is gutter cleaning and roof anti-moss treatment day.

If you atill can do such work by yourself, you must be young(er).
Bless you.

@mimi
I have to admit, we hired a young team to do the cleaning. My husband helps and I hide inside and deal with the dog (who loves the team, but can be annoying). Neither my husband or I can deal with the height of the roof! We do all the moss removal on the sides of the house and the paths around it, by ourselves though.

Bless you too, Mimi. I hope you are having a good day!

It would be almost silly to walk around the world forward

thanks for the OT and good luck with the mold/mildew
operation!

The book sez that his parents (or his mom, his father died when Plennie was 5 and 1/2 months old) would never say why they gave such a unique name. HIs middle name is Lawrence. I think it's cool that he didn't switch to his middle name when he got old enough!

Mold and Mildew ops went fine. We hired some young men to go on the roof and do the gutter cleaning and roof moss work there, we did the stuff down below (paths and such). It was quick, but now the roof looks like it was hit with baking soda!

Hope you are having a good day, and thanks for stopping by!

They say if you walk backwards, you actually lose more weight. Don't know if that's true, I can't try it. I live in the woods. I would probably fall every 20 feet or run into a tree.

Another day at almost 100 degrees. I thought I did the right thing by moving to Florida. I have arthritis everywhere. The cold up north would have really killed me. Now I'm wondering if I should move somewhere I could breath better. The heat down here is unreal and I'm so north in Florida that I'm almost in Alabama. I pity those south of me.

@Enchantress
And, he used those glasses, which were sold at the time for extra safety for people driving cars to wear, and those really helped him. I could not walk backwards like that either, I'd weave like a drunk person! Smile

Florida, I understand why you moved there, but it's too hot for me. And humid. I lived in PA for a long time, and learned the east coast humidity would do me in. I was born and raised on the west coast, in California heat, but no humidity. Would dry heat make it easier to breath, but allow you to avoid the cold? A lot of people move down to Arizona from Washington to avoid the cold, but keep the dryness. Arizona is sucky right now, too, though Sad

Bleh, keep well, and keep cool and I'm glad you enjoyed this little bit about Plennie. It was cool to learn about the guy to write this!

Lived in Prescott, a mile high city surrounded by a huge national forest.
The high desert has the advantage of dry air and cooler nights. Could
have spent my remaining days there, but called back east for higher
purposes. May just go back now that obligations are satisfied.

We have the heat with no humidity. It’s much cooler than Arizona, but I guess you wouldn’t do well in the winter here…maybe you can split your time between the two? After my 3rd year in California my body craved the change of seasons and I long for the cold of winter.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

Not my forte but a fun story.

GA governor Lester Maddox used to ride a bicycle backwards as his trick.

@Lookout
Trying to imagine riding a bike backwards for a long time, a real huge bike too, not a kid's. I can't imagine. I have enough balance problems walking backwards, nevermind riding a bike!

Hope you are having a good day, and not too many chores there either! Thanks for stopping by!
