Friday Night Photos Hot Diggity Dog Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

Well the heat wave the rest of the southwest has been dealing with finally arrived in San Diego earlier this week. Inland from the coast where I live the temps have been in the upper 90s and are expected to remain there until the middle of next week before cooling off. Thankfully it's been cooling off enough at night to keep the house comfortable without having to run the A/C.

They say every dog has its day. These dogs were having their day Tuesday morning at Dog Beach in San Diego. There were breeds of all sizes, shapes, and colors enjoying their time running around on the beach sans leash.

So I looked it up in Google.

https://lajollamom.com/dog-friendly-beaches-san-diego/

Ocean Beach Dog Beach was established in 1972 as one of the first official leash-free beaches in the United States. It’s a great place that welcomes all breeds and sizes, in line with the beach town’s vibe.

The Original Dog Beach is wide and sandy, with a lot of space for pups to play and swim. It’s one of the most popular off-leash dog beaches in San Diego as there are no hourly restrictions.

The off-leash area can be found in the northern part, where the sand meets the mouth of the San Diego River. Keep your dogs north of the Ocean Beach Bike Path and avoid the area between the path and the beach pier.

From the site they do seem to be enjoying themselves.

You're right. A dog beach is not a bad thing. Thanks for the link. I didn't know there were that many beaches in the county that allowed dogs.

My neighbourhood is carved by many bays, one of which has long been designated as the dog beach. One where dogs can romp freely on sand, through the river, or in the harbour waters.

You’ll notice that it’s nowhere near the water. Beagles are notorious for having an aversion to water.

Sam though can’t get enough of it and her favorite thing is to find water bottles in it and bring them to me. Seriously you should see how her eyes light up when she finds one. Then she works on destroying it and leaving it all over. Charlie however used to find litter and then go bury it.

I always see something I haven’t seen before even though I’ve been walking at the cemetery for 15 years.

When I saw the beagle I thought of you and Charlie. I know what you mean about walking the same ground and finding something new. The hole in the tree looks like a great place for birds to build a nest.

Hi all, Hey SP!

Hope it's all good! Great doggie shots SP! One of these days I'll have to dig some pics out of a dust mop of a rescue mutzo my wife and I had for years. It birded all over America.

I am not sure what breed this dog is, but anyway...

opossum050723.jpg

I think it is a Marsupial Retriever.

Actually, the two standout features of the Opossum are that it is America's only marsupial, and, only really prehensile tailed mammal. This individual seems to have lost more than half of one of these key definitive features, its tail. Which would seem to me to be quite a handicap in possum world.

Anyway, I gotta fly...

Be well all!

I remember long ago, reading about how quickly possums extended their territory. It took them only 75 years to travel north from Florida to the NE, suffering only frostbite on their tails along the way. No wonder they developed shorter tails. They are a prime target here for eradication, which in my experience has been largely successful for the bird population.

@janis b Hope all is well! I did not know that about their tails freezing off. Fascinating. And considering two winters ago we had record freeze events, it seems likely that this could be what caused the loss. I have never seen on partly tailed. Nothing tangles with them generally, so was perplexed as to what might have happened. You have the best idea yet! Thanks!

Nice shot of the Opossum. It's been years since I've seen around my way. I did not know they are marsupials so thanks for that bit of information.

@Socialprogressive @Socialprogressive

I remember when I first learned that possums are marsupials. It blew my mind in a way, because in my mind only kangaroos and Koalas were marsupials. It seems that most if not all marsupials are from Australia, including the possums imported to NZ. I've never met a kangaroo, so I still imagine them from childhood images and stories as more motherly than possums ; ). My first direct contact with possums here was on the deck just after dark. I heard this loud hissing, and hissed back into the bush. The louder, more aggressive hissing I got in return scared me back inside!

Thank you for the images of the freedom and playfulness of dogs.

Interesting choice of music, both lyrically and musically, including sounds both natural and produced of dogs barking and howling. It has quite a punch.

Be well and enjoy the weekend, all.

@janis b Excellent vid Janis! Thanks! Seabirds are indeed awesome, and albatross are the pinnacle of seabirdiness. The worst thing about being in the middle of Texas is the lack of seabirds. One famous ornithologist said life would never be the same, 'for I have watched the albatross fly'. Between the cats, mice, and rats man introduced to most islands of the world where most seabirds nest, and the fisheries bycatch abuse, it is amazing so many remain.

Look up the Bermuda Petrel story. It was less than a dozen left on the islet where the rats hadn't gotten the last few. Many dozens of islands have been depopulated of their breeding seabirds via cats and rats mostly, but mice too in some places. Then toss in long-line fishery bycatch... it does not look good for the long term.

If the youth of the world, with their desire to Iive and let live are supported, then there’s a chance of survival.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy hearing this young woman’s experience working with Albatross on the Chatham Islands.

The last direct report regarding the original project I found was from March 2019, but from the interview above I assume it's going as well as possible at these times. I think every form of life has been compromised because of covid responses.

Peninsula. Smile You are talking to a Numero Uno Dawg Person, Sp. I grew up with a German Shepherd and a Scottish Terrier. Had Dobermans for 30 years (BTW, they are NOT demon dawgs). My final dawg rodeo stars 2 Beagles, male and female. The female is fixed. That's a great looking Beagle in your pix. Beagles and Dobes have 3 things in common: short-haired, very smart, and STUBBORN. Long live dawgs in my book of life.

and laughed at how much they liked escaping from the yard and taking themselves off for a jaunt. I can leave the gate open and Sam just wanders out in the drive but rarely goes farther than that. Charlie would have been off for hours. Only way I’ve kept mine in is with a solid fence. Do yours wander? Stubborn is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of beagles. But life would have been diminished without them!

@snoopydawg the nail on the proverbial head. Did our Beagle pups wander????? Are you kidding? Our female is named after Houdini cos she was one top notch escape artist as a little puppy. Our male isn't fixed like she is now. Breeder's advice cos of their size, and you have to watch the weight as you know. Smile We've got the holes plugged under the fence now. Eagle (their names are Eagle and Kipp) will slither out the gate if you don't watch him. Kipp really doesn't bother now that both are grown. She's the Alpha dawg, fixed or not. LOL. I gotta repeat, they are smart and stubborn. But, you know that. Smile

in the fence and jump into a tree, jump down and come around to sit on the front porch. And I watched Charlie actually climb a chain link fence to get into the alley. Just up and over licitly split .
One time she did that she ended up with 90 stitches on her tummy.

One night I got home really late and Dusty was gone..heard the phone ringing and it was my grandpa asking if I was missing a dawg. Somehow she found his house 3 blocks away and got into his yard then bayed till he woke up and let her in. I don’t think I ever walked with her to his house so we just couldn’t figure that out.

You got to love their determination to get out of their yard and go wandering. They’ve never dug their way out under the fence though like yours have. One time I went looking for Charlie and there she was just walking up the gutter on her way home and the look on her face when she saw me was priceless! Busted!

Charlie never got put on a diet, but she was only 8 when she left, but yeah the other 2 got porky in later years. I will get another beagle before I shuffle off this mortal coil, but for now just having too much fun with Sam.

You should post pictures of your 2 critters. I’d love to see them.

@snoopydawg but alas, I am. Eagle looks just like a Beagle postcard; Kipp Houdini is gorgeous, mostly black and white with honest-to-god Nefertiti eyes. She has black ringing her eyes very similar to the Egyptian queen's. She can be a sneaky brat, and they are both spoiled rotten. LOL. Pet Sam for me--love your Beagle tales. I hope the Great Salt Lake is getting fully replenished. Smile

I was surprised that beagle puppies are black and white when born. I thought the first one was broken when Dusty had her first batch.

You can see how Dusty had her older coat when she had her puppies. I saw my brother’s beagle when she was 8 weeks old and had already had a lot of brown on her so I didn’t know that they were born black and white. Live and learn.
