Friday Night Photos Park Place vol 2

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
I keep waiting for typical San Diego weather to arrive, but so far it's been a no show. All spring temps have been a good 10° below normal with mostly overcast skies, and very little sun. This week we only got a few hours of sun and had two nights with heavy drizzle. The forecast for next week isn't looking any better. Normally it's sunny and 80 by this time of year. On the plus side I'm still upright and breathing which beats the alternative so I'll live with a little crappy weather.
These are some scenes from Balboa Park. Most were shot this month. The ones with blue skies and sunlight are from last August.

Love the B & W shot.
Still lots of snow on the hills and the backside is just loaded with it. Just to the right on the back is where I camp early in the season, but I don’t think it’s open yet. Going to be months till I can go higher up.
This chestnut tree is loaded with blossoms and boy does it smell wonderful.
I should use flicker so I don’t lose clarity on the upload. They’re much more vibrant in person.

I named the squirrel Wally.
I see squirrels in the park all the time, but this was the first time one has come right up to me. It was a fun experience.
Beautiful shots of the mountains and the chestnut blossoms. I hope the snow melts soon. It looks like a great place to camp and photograph.

Amazing how frilly and delicate the flowers of the spikey chestnut are. Chestnuts have long been my favourite nut. I rarely find them here.

It looks like you have much to explore in your wonderful city, from ocean to land.
Your first photo inspired me to look at the architecture of Balboa Park. What a diverse number of styles representing different cultures there are in the park. The buildings also serve as cultural venues for art, theatre, music, etc. The parks history is fascinating and included great foresight in planning.

I really enjoyed seeing the Indian sculpture, it is very evocative. One figure has its hands in a prayerful position, enjoying and beseeching the warmth of the sun in the moment ... the other peaceful yet melancholy. The soft light and subtle colours of the flowers are beautiful.

Love your sand sculpture shots. Nice mix of textures and patterns and colors in the first one. The second one looks like a miniature palm tree between the shoe prints. Glad you were able to capture them before the rain washed them away.
Thanks for the link for Balboa Park. I'm not sure, but I think Balboa is the largest public city park in the US. I do know it is larger than Central Park in NY.

The tide would have beat out the rain since the clouds are still holding the rain in. I think the colder temperatures are delaying the rain. It's hard to know what to expect from the weather anymore, as you too seem to experience.

Poorwill
Orca, male, about 50 miles W. of Pt. Arguello, Sta. Barb. Co., CA, Nov. 1995, in 2 mile deep water. The pod was maybe 10, just this one alpha male.

Yeah Poorwill are awesome. The first white guy to find the sleeping bird was Dr. Edumund Jaeger, it was in a crack in a big giant boulder in the Lucerne Valley (Mojave Desert area). Think one of those Joshua
Tree giant boulders. He thought it was dead, took it back to camp, it warmed up on the way, and after holding it for a while it blinked! He took it back. And wrote it up for publishing. He showed us (my family) the crack where he found it. He was my uncle's prof when Uncle was doing his Desert Pupfish Ph.D. So camped with Dr. J. He wrote a textbook on pronunciation of binomials.
One more Poorwill story. One of my dad's college classes on a field trip in socal mountains somewhere. Half a dozen cars maybe, over a dozen people. Probably cruising a road at night for snakes. We come on a Poorwill in the road. All the cars stop, evreyone gets out and looks, it is light up like daylight with flashlights. Someone walks over and picks it up. We pass the bird around the circle of people, over a dozen, and assumed it was hit dead. Someone took it over to the verge and set it down. We were soooo sad. And then it flew off!

Great shots of the Orcas. They're a very impressive creature. Both beautiful and deadly.
We have Poorwills here but Ive never seen one. Then again, as good as they blend in to their surroundings, it could be I've seen one and didn't know it.

and stories. The squirrel, chestnut blooms, and Poorwill are simply astounding!! The natural camouflage on that bird is incredible. And its hibernation habits.....whew, no wonder it's still with us, and not extinct.
Weather here in DeStupidgovernorville has been interesting. First, plenty of rain which we needed very badly. Now the temps are cool for this time of year, but you bet I'm not complaining. LOL. The air is clean and it's actually very pretty out. Of course, the local news yokels are screeching about the start of hurricane season. Whoopee do. We know about it and are prepared, you overpaid dummies. Anywho, hope everyone has a safe and healthy Holiday Weekend. Stay well. I am staying clear of any beaches, the next few days. Rec'd!
