Friday Night Photos Rose Garden Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

I stopped by the rose garden when I was at Balboa Park last week. The rose bushes are just starting to blossom again after being pruned back around the beginning of the year.

An amazing flower. Care not too much for the thorns, but that is a consequence of
beauty. You can look, but don't touch. Great tune!

I've been nicked up by rose thorns a number of times while getting in close to photograph blossoms and bugs.
Beautiful painting and song selection.

This is from our trip out to the island to check on the lake level. It’s up 4 feet which is a good sign. I could walk to the rock on the left last year, but now would have to get my feet wet. This is where we camp when we go out and we have the whole area to ourselves. It lost a lot of clarity

And there’s a lot more to come. I live in the middle of the picture and it takes 5 minutes to be hiking up the canyon to the waterfall.

I got a big smile seeing Sam sitting there with her tongue hanging out. Glad to here the water level is coming up. With all the snow I see on the mountains in the background, it looks like the lake level should continue to rise. I really love your third shot.

on my iPad I get a few seconds of video and it’s so funny seeing Sam’s tongue. But you’d have to see it to get the picture…pun intended.

I took this out of the visitor center window and with I had retaken this one that shows how surrounded we are by the mountains.

There was barely any water close to the causeway last year so you can see how much this winter has helped.

that structure pictured looks a bit high and dry.
Guessing maybe 15 feet above MWL
Take a few bucketfuls to get up that far.
Sam seems to enjoy it anyway.

You sure that's not a rose she picked ; ).

I'm glad the parched lake is getting a good drink. It's interesting to see the stark contrast of the dry earth and distant snow covered mountains.

Say hi to Sam from me.

Hi all, Hey SP!

Awesome rose photos, I can almost smell them. What a bunch of fancy beautiful varieties. When the roses have blooms there are bugs, and if not too many people, often birds.

SD, your mountain and lake pics are great too! Beautiful. Looks awesome.

Here are another attempt at photographing slides. So certainly a generation degenerated, as has been said about the photog... not all that happy with them, but a digicopy anyway...

American Kestrel, formerly Sparrow Hawk, America's smallest true falcon (note long thin pointed wings), which eats primarily grasshoppers and mice, but can take birds as well.
kestrel-sm.jpg

Pomarine Jaeger, adult, but which had molted the spoon-shaped tail feathers. Jaeger means hunter in German is my understanding. They make a living in the non-breeding seasons as pirates at sea in the open ocean, forcing other seabirds to disgorge food. There are three species of jaegers, they nest in the tundra, eating mostly baby birds and lemmings.
pomjaeg.jpg

Burrowing Owl, is a terrestrial owl of the west often associated with Prairie Dogs, and in California, with the California Ground Squirrel. This one was in the last colony in L.A. County. The site can be found under the parking lot of the L.A. Galaxy soccer team/field adjacent to CSUDH. There were a dozen there still in the early 1990's. The odd bird still occurs in L.A. Co., but no more colonies. My buddy got his masters on them. One he banded wintering at Seal Beach Nav. Sta. was caught in summer in northern Nevada! Some populations are resident, others highly migratory.

Nice raptor photos. The first time I saw a Kestrel I was surprised how small they were. When I worked at North Island Naval Air Station on Coronado Island there was a colony of Burrowing Owls that lived on the base.

I vote for any of your three bird images to replace the stars and stripes on the american flag. What natural beauty and strength your photos reveal.

You’re right about the meaning of Jaeger, and that photo is stunning.

Will a shot of mezcal do?

@janis b Thank you for the kind words... and jaeger def...

I quite like that jaeger pic myself. They are hard to see that well unless you go to artic tundra breeding grounds.. We mostly see them only at sea, when on a bouncing unstable platform. Seabirds in flight are often a perfect setup for great bokeh too. That wonderfully washed out of focus background.

I wish we would see birds as important here in America. If we would take care of them, we'd be fine.

and sure... pass me that bottle... Wink

'artist of a photog’ sounds like some breed of something or other. You can add me to your checkoff list of sightings ; ). As an image junkie I love looking at photographs of all kinds for their vital nature in presenting the world around us.

I would be happy to share the bottle with you. I only discovered the wonderful taste and experience of mezcal fairly recently in a mezcal margarita my s-i-l made.

1 part tequila
1 part mezcal
1/4 part cointreau
fresh lime juice
drop of agave syrup
ice

Maybe it is as simple as taking care of the birds.

I have witnessed them attacking and harassing peregrine falcons and red-tailed hawks. This is an orphaned baby kestrel warning me to stay back and leave it alone:

@enhydra lutris Hey EL! Great pic! We rehabbed a kestrel once in the house. Named killy. After the incessant calls. It was fine until someone with blonde hair came in the house, whence it immediately launched itself at them and landed in said tussle. Looking for a mouse maybe? Smile
