03/06 - The Periodic Table of the Elements

On March 6, 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev presented the first periodic table of the elements to the Russian Chemical Society. The periodic table is a graphic representation of groupings of chemical elements sharing similar properties. It had a revolutionary impact on both chemistry and physics.

Also on March 6, in 1912 the Italians allegedly became the first to use "airships" (not balloons) in war, dropping bombs on Turkish troops from Dirigibles. Dirigibles differ from mere balloons in that they are self powered and can be steered, while a balloon, unless tethered and hence stationary, simply drifts with the wind, contrary to certain recent allegations. Tethered balloons had been used for observations well before that date, but they aren't considered to be "airships".

Today is the Day of the Righteous in Europe

The European Day of the Righteous was established on 6 March to commemorate all those who stood up against totalitarianisms and crimes against humanity, who fought for life and dignity of other people. The term "righteous" is in this case understood in a broader meaning, not limited only to those who risked their lives helping Jews during the Holocaust. The day was established by the European Parliament in 2012.

tune from the pirates of penzance if I'm not mistaken.
Yes here it is...Major-General's Song from The Pirates of Penzance

Thanks for the OT and all the music. I'm late because we went to a local wildflower garden now covered in bluebells, poppies and much more. Also finished up taxes today, and had to pay...more than I thought, but what you going to do?

HI all, Hey EL!

How much do they teach the Periodic Table was a Russian today? I had a test in high school, 10th grade, in which we received a blank Periodic Table of Elements chart, and had to fill it out. That was the test. I aced it, as I loved the dang thing, was the first to turn it in, yeah I was that guy, all filled out properly. It was so fast the teacher looked up at the clock when I gave it to him. Due to some bad genes no doubt. I could never muster a small part of that now!

Spring is arriving slowly a way down south at 30N. In the last week new arrivals showing up are White-eyed Vireo, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Zone-tailed Hawk, Vermilion Flycatcher, Lark Sparrow and a local saw two male Purple Martin. These are all local breeders returning to nesting grounds, not passers-through like the Cranes or Geese overhead. Friday night in the dark thousands of White-fronted Goose passed over, about 10 minutes worth of V's, bearing due north. They take off right after dark as cooler for flying all night. A small disjunct population winters just south of me. Most of them likely leave on one or two nights when just the right days (southerlies), if you are lucky you can catch some overhead high. Our beloved Golden-cheeked Warblers will return this week.

Have a righteous day all!

@dystopian
laid another egg. My neighbor who is a birder and son of a wicked good birder says that he saw a white throated sparrow in his back yard yesterday. Not impossible, but I've never seen one here. Until I checked a range map I would've said it was a desert birtd, since I always see them in Borrego.

Happy day to all! Just happen to be in Costa Rica and am visiting my dentist here today! Hopefully just a checkup and cleaning!

Up early for some birding. Place I am staying is surrounded by palm trees as well as almond trees. As a result, every morning a cacophony of scarlet macaws and red loved parrots eating almonds.

Went in the mangrove and were rewarded with sighting of boat billed heron and fray necked wood rail. Now to clean up for dentista!

My wife and I stayed at a place where many rooms were small cabins with small low walled patio/veranda things. We went to ours, prepared cocktails and plopped down in the patio only to notice a sloth on a palm a few yards directly in front of us, slowly ascending. We got to watch for quite a while Smile

@enhydra lutris Several wino pals of mine loved the wine in Chile so much that they found special world market stores to buy it here in Texas. They are still drinking Chilean wine as preferred above all others.

the wind drinkers insisted that we be their native informants on wine. I recall one place, one of them came up to us and said get the wine from Sonoma, right? It was a Gallo, Sonoma, so we said no, go with the Chilean, sort of surprised them but they thanked us after some other guests got the Gallo and they compared.b Wink

and especially those lovely actinides.

As Tom Lehrer said,

When the air becomes uraneous
We will all go simultaneous...

My little chunk of trinitite from Alamagordo still had a very strong emission of 59.5KeV gammas from 241Am, even all these years after the Trinity shot- no surprise, since its half-life is 242 years. Lost that in the fire, so it's now in a landfill somewhere. No problem- there'll be a lot more of it around once the boys decide to play with the toys.
