I wish they'd make up their mind on Ukraine

For almost a year now, I've been hearing from the news and certain internet voices about how Ukraine has been kicking Russia's ass. But the Washington Post recently published this account of the state of the war:
.

Russia is destroying Ukraine’s economy, raising costs for U.S. and allies
Story by Jeff Stein, David Stern • Wednesday

KYIV, Ukraine — Two months of relentless missile and drone attacks by Russia have decimated Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and blown a hole in projections for the country’s war-ravaged economy.

Before those strikes, Kyiv expected to need at least $55 billion in foreign assistance next year to meet basic expenses — more than the country’s entire annual prewar spending.

Now, with its energy systems severely battered, and more Russian attacks likely, some officials believe Ukraine could end up needing another $2 billion a month, and political leaders have begun trying to brace Western supporters for such worst-case scenarios.

“What do you do when you can’t heat your house, you can’t run your shops, factories or plants, and your economy is not working?” said Oleg Ustenko, an economic adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky. “We are going to be requiring more financial assistance, and Putin is doing this to destroy unity among allies.”

I guess we need to send more money.

the corrupt's laundromat.

I guess we need to send more money.

And patriot missiles, that should hasten the demise and bring about the need for more laundered money aid.

Taiwan is on deck.

@JtC
to the Ukraine. Why? It was their responsibility to get along with Russia and they failed to do so.

Now they end up where they are.

Stupid is what stupid does.

Russia had committed war crimes over and over. And to send weapons and money will just prolong the mess.

I would help the Ukrainians who manage to escape their country without hesitation.

FTW. Fuck The War. Pardon my french.

Dear mimi, please understand that I'm not trying to start an argument, yet I do wish to understand your comment.
Thanks in advance.

All over the West, government officials, pundits, media have pushed that the Ukrainian war is the most important conflict on earth as it will decide the very fate of democracy and freedom. Putin is the new Hitler who wants to conquer the entire world. Hero Zelensky is invited to give a speech at every event about the plight of Ukraine. I think he missed the local boy scout meetings. The hysterics are so bad EU nations voluntarily improvising poverty in their countries to show Putin a thing or two. (Oh, Zelensky wanted to give a speech before the French vs. Argentina final of the World Cup. FIFA said no and Ukraine was not happy about the "negative response".)

Will the direct cash payments and loans help ordinary Ukrainians? Nope. That money will be stolen big time by oligarchs, mafia types, corrupt officials...you name it.

But the anti-Russian hysterics are so embedded in the combined West, I doubt if it could put on the proverbial brakes.

In that regard, Russia appears to be making the additional plunder of Ukraine more difficult. Plundering a bombed-out country means additional investment in that country, which may not be worth it on balance. You'd think that such a situation would lead to a negotiated settlement to the war, or something like that.

The ruling classes need an extra party to make the rest of us feel as if we participate in democracy. That's what the Democrats are for. They make the US more durable than the Soviet Union was.

on the percentage of Americans that support sending aid to Ukraine at the expense to our economy?
I am curious if a majority of us think it is worth it.

@on the cusp From what I gather most Americans still support sending aid to Ukraine.

Poll: Majority of Americans Support Continued Aid for Ukraine

Have not seen any poll question which asked people the trade off. But certainly the combined West is pushing the theme of suffering for the sake of the Ukrainians, or suffering to counter the evil Putin.

But in some ways does not matter what Americans think. Both parties are in favor of escalating aid until the point of direct conflict/war with Russia, at least in America.

It seems to me that the real purpose of what we call polls is to assess the effectiveness of our current narrative's lies effectiveness. Benevolent charities are not the ones paying for these ‘polls’, propaganda mavens are.

@otc

That's the potted meat variety, btw.
If you answered no, then 97% agree with you (+/- 3%).
If you answered yes, then 97% agree with you (+/- 3%).
Most republicans and democrats agree and
disagree in equal numbers. Therefore, it is a non-issue.
Independents don't count.
There.

question everything

@ovals49 Polls are carefully posed questions to elicit the desired answer. I did my best to qualify as "legitimate" poll, but I doubt there is any such thing.

Cuz they are attacking the Ukraine power grid, but the media refuses to report on how Ukraine has been shelling the Donbas not only for 8 years, but during this current war. And while Russia is not attacking civilian infrastructure outside the power grid Ukraine has been and they have killed far more Ukrainians than Russia has.

The comments on this story show that people have no idea what is actually happening in Ukraine or what led up to Russia’s unprovoked aggression.

A few people there understand the big story, but most do not.
