Happy Friday everyone. Please feel free to post any photos, memes, or music you like.
It's hard to believe it's been a year since I took over as host of FNP. Time sure does fly. My thanks to everyone for all the wonderful photos, memes, music and conversation you've contributed through the year and I'm looking forward to more in the coming year. I don't know about anybody else, but I'm going to tip back a cold one and celebrate. Cheers everyone.
One of the nice things about photographing at the zoo, when the animals are being camera shy the plants and flowers never are.

Some native wildflowers, which I have probably posted before, but so, with apologies...
Brown-flowered Psoralea - neat as there are very few brown flowers.
Skeletonplant - seemingly has no leaves, just stems, and a flower. Note when photo'ing flowers do not do as I do and cast shadow over part of the flower.
Escarpment Cherry - the Edwards Plateau native wild cherry, no crop for a few years now here though. Cherries have cyanids in them and Red-shouldered Hawks are particularly fond of lining nests with boughs presumed to keep the nest mites and such down.

The Brown-flowered Psoralea looks very much like a pea flower. Are the seeds edible?
The leafless flower reminded me of one of the earliest Spring flowers in Connecticut woodlands - The Skunk Cabbage.

The Psoralea does look like a Pea group flower, but I don't ever see 'peas' on them. I think the pod is too small, but likely good wildlife forage.
I know the Western Skunk Cabbage from the Sierra Nevada where it is a plant of wet meadows in the forest. It looks a little different than the eastern type at the link. See Skunk Cabbage in the CA mountains? Look for nesting Lincoln's Sparrows.

Thank you for the wild flowers. Any wild flowers we get here will be in the spring provided we get enough rain.
When I was growing up we had a couple of Bing Cherry trees in our yard. Very tasty. My mom would make cherry jelly with them. Also very tasty. Are the Escarpment Cherries edible?

Must have been great having trees! I love good cherries, and especially off the tree ripe. Yeah these are edible and delicious. A bit tart, very strongly flavored though. During these droughts though, no cherries. Which means the ladies around town that sell jelly, have no Escarpment Cherry, Agarita, Prickly Pear, or Mesquite Honey/Jelly. We are at about three years now of no wild food crops of any of them at levels the grannies have local wild food crop jellies. In good years, in August Mrs. and I would hike to and sit under a cherry tree at local state park, because the birds come in and out all day. And we had to make sure they were safe for them...

That cherry is so neat!
I hope it gets to producing again. I knew about the cyanide because one isn't supposed to allow goats to eat the older, dried up, leaves of cherries and so on. If the goats aren't eating anything else, they can get poisoned and be very sick or die. Our goats always have a ton of good stuff to eat, so they just mouth the leaves and move on. Hmm, ok back on topic: I didn't know birds used the branches because of that. So cool!

Thanks for the ID on the Kahili Ginger. Other than the Hibiscus I don't know what the other flowers/plants are.

The Kahili ginger
is a flower that I know especially well. It has followed me from Hawaii to NZ, or maybe I followed it ; ).
In Hawaii it was revered Here it is a number one pest.
Interesting how the same plant can be both.
From our camping trip
I can’t wait for fall and the trees turning yellow.
Another look at soreass pass I slithered down on mine. It’s aptly named and much longer than shown. It’s in the middle and looks like a well worn spot for people hiking over the pass to come down.
I need to try to get better pictures of this. It’s more picturesque than how it looks.
From our recent storm. The peaks on the right are where the meteor went over in the tweet I posted Sunday on the other side of the mountain.
I thought it was Thursday…where does the time go? We are getting more rain and it’s in the 60's down from the 80's. Such a nice break.

to the water drop photography, I haven't done any of that in a few years. It got to be to much work setting up, taking down and cleaning all the equipment needed.

The colours in the first photo are beautiful
From purple mountains to blue hills and summer green of aspens, nice.
It was very cool when we were there
and we got from light to heavy rain and we stayed cozy inside the trailer. On one of my trips it snowed and I had a leak in the propane line so it wasn’t pleasant. I need to remember to pack sweats just in case.
Xmas meadows is where I fell in love with photography. My mom’s boss gave me his old Pentax 35mm and one of the first pictures I took is still my favorite. Then I was fortunate enough to work in a fully equipped darkroom and learned the other side of photography. I’m sure we all remember the days of taking multiple pictures at different exposures and getting maybe 3 decent pictures out of 36. When digital cameras came out I thought it was a fad and would never replace film. I waited till a 4mpx came out and went nuts taking hundreds of photos from the north California coast. I have a 10 now and I think that is high enough for my needs.

I think the Polaroid sx70 was the precursor to digital in a way. It definitely was a great photographic teacher for me in its immediacy. But it was the quality of it that I enjoyed the most.
I have it on my old iPad and it needs charged
I’ll post it next week and if I forget please remind me. I also have a picture of the hike we went on that shows the backside of the pass and the route we took. I flew over it once and recognized it was our hike. I did it in my 20's and we spent 4 days up there.
