Happy Friday everyone. As always, post any photos you like.
On Tuesday the camera club I'm in had it's monthly outing at the San Diego Automotive Museum. I think they should change their name to San Diego Automotive and Motorcycle Museum since they have more motorcycles on display than automobiles.
As automobiles go, I like our past and I like our present. Can't say I like our future.

71' chevy vega hatchback
63' Dodge D-100 named chuck the truck with a cedar shell on the back
70 something VW transporter (mine was modified in Elkhart Indiana with a pop top)
1990 Honda Insight (hap two of them)
2005 astro van (had two of them too)
92' Ford Club Wagon (called it the whale)
Cevy Bel Air 68? called it the mud wagon
And many others, a couple of Pintos, Buicks, International 4 wheel drive, an MGA .. not to mention the bikes.. Triumph, Harley, 3x Hondas, Yamaha and goat carts.

Over the years most of the cars I've owned have been Fords. The two non-fords were a 1972 Fiat 124 and a 1981 Honda Civic wagon. The Fords: 1967, 1998, 2008 Mustang (I still have the 98), 1981 Currier, 1994 Ranger, 1996 F150, 2016 Explorer, and currently a 2022 Escape hybrid.

that I have mundane taste in cars. My two favourite cars were a small Subaru 4wd hatchback which was perfect on the slippery clay roads in the mountains of Hawaii, and later across the country on back roads. The other was my 1996 Toyota Carib 4wd which I had for 14 years until 2 1/2 years ago when I replaced it with a boring Toyota hybrid.
Toyotas are definitely reliable.
My sister has a 97 4runner with over 225k miles and it's still chugging along.

my last car was a 1996 Toyota Carib 4wd with close to the same amount of miles.I had it for 14 years and It was still going well, but I replaced it with a Toyota hybrid 2 1/2 years ago.

great set of yer wheels QMS! I wish I had pics of all mine... A 62 T-bird might be the one I wish I still had most, a friggin' boat, with a sliding steering column that moved a foot to the right and the shotgun person could steer with it... ostensibly for the overweight entry and egress I believe. The 62 Falcon was neat, a 66 Chevelle with a straight 6 was awesome, a 64 VW Microbus as they were called, a Saab I can't remember which, it was neat to drive though, then a set of Detroit tanks when I was a travelling salesman, a 78 Caprice Classic, a 77 Delta Olds, and our fav a 78 Cadillac Seville, which we did a quarter of a mil miles around the country in. Then some small pickups too, a Courier, a Ranger, and now a Mazda small pickup. Another fav was the Toyo Tercel Wagon in 4WD. Birders dream car. Go anywhere, 30 mpg. And then needs work out back a 79 5 ton Ford Truck with an 18' box and liftgate. our moving truck. Moved so much had to buy one.

Not a picture but this is what I've been doing almost every day. I take a drone up around 4pm HST and get video of the development that is blasting away at the caves and caverns that are the only place to find the Koloa blind wolf cave spider. The golf course next to the property has USFWS designated habitat that is only feet from where they are blasting. Check out Save Koloa YouTube page for more videos.

Yes I live in Koloa right next to the Big Save (Spend). I've been on Kauai for over 20 years. The corruption in the government and the local courts is ridiculous. With that said, Friends of Maha`ulepu, FOM, for whom I work, have been able to stop a 3000 cow industrial dairy from setting up shop on the South Shore and bringing flies and the smell, let alone the million of gallons of waste from the cows, to Kauai. FOM also has stopped a 789 unit development from being built in Kapaa. FOM was instrumental in helping the people of O`okala on the Big Island get their streams and gullies cleaned by helping to shut down the dairy that was literally causing waste to run through peoples front yards. We try to keep them honest but it isn't easy at all. Takes using the law and that is expensive. I only help our retired blind lawyer from Kauai give them hell. We do what we can.

Thank you for writing about the effort you and the Friends of Maha`ulepu are undertaking, and about the rewards they are yielding. Contributing to the protection of the natural beauty and life of the islands must be very challenging, and clearly fulfilling at times.
I lived on Kauai for 3 years from 1982-1985. I moved to Kauai for the sole purpose of living in the most beautiful place I knew of.
I wish you and all continued success.
There's a large parcel of land
at the end of my street that is owned by Home Fed bank. They want to build 3000 homes there. Needless to say nobody (other than the bought and paid for city council) wants that.

Just a few miles east of your picture.
My first car was a Honda hatchback and I had 3 Honda, 2 Ford which were slugs, 4 Toyota 1 Saab, 1 Mazda seen here which I loved and drove till the engine died and now the Nissan beast and 1 more Toyota. The Saab was a blast to drive as is the current Yota and the beast is a huge gas guzzler, but I need it to pull the trailer and drive in the winter while I park the convertible. I got so many cars because I was keeping up with the Jones. Wasted tons of money buying new ones and only paid off 3. Now 5.

I no longer have the Mazda that I bought 1 month after my back surgery. I drove my last Honda back from the Bay Area and turned into the first used car place I saw. Bought the Mazda even though I couldn’t afford it because it was easier on my back. I’m driving a Nissan Armada now so I can pull my trailer. But the Mazda pulled my old trailer better than the 4 runners did.
Here’s what I mean about Biden’s cruelty since the other thread is dead. "It’s dead Jim!"

As you know, it's easier to survive the craziness if one has an outlet that includes an escape into nature.
Here’s the beast at our favorite camp spot in the Unitas
Across the street is a ton of aspens and it’s the only spot up there where I can get internet. It’s also the place that Sam chases squirrels and butterflies.
Here it is at the spot just over the mountain and our trailer. The back is where Sam’s bedroom is.

to tow and manoeuvre the trailer. Do you get help from Sam ; ).
I am an expert going forward
I’m still a novice at backing up but getting better. I have a camera on the back of the trailer so I can see if I’m going to back it into a tree or off a cliff.
But it let’s me see if it’s safe to change lanes or if I’m holding up traffic. It’s extra extra wide angle so it looks like cars behind me are actually past the back of the trailer.
And the camp spot is much prettier than shown here.
Yes Sam is a backseat driver and I’m thankful she can’t talk when I’m backing up. I can only imagine what she’d say… "let me do it."

He's a record setter for speed on his modified 1920 Indian motorcycle. He was 68 and riding a 47-year-old machine when he set his last record at Bonneville.

Hi J, sorry to be slow getting back to you...
I think it took a special sort that were riding Indians. The similarity I see is the drive to discover and push into the unknown. To try the untried, to do the undone. My Grandpa did not go to college, but he was a supervisor at Rocketdyne working on solid rocket boosters for the Gemini and Apollo programs. Signed a line saying they would work every launch. Which BTW he could not watch, because it was bubble gum, paper clips and band-aids in his words.
They repaid him by laying him off at 19 years and 6 months, so as to not have to pay retirement. Which was one of my first early experiences with corporate. So his story of being a hero did not end as pretty.

The first set of wheels I had
was a '71 Ford Pinto with a stick shift, no A/C, but I had a great sound system.
The body was an eggshell, colored forest green, black interior. The engine and drive train were built like tanks--no lie. It was used so I had to have repairs done on the transmission. Once I did, that baby ran forever. All it needed was regular oil changes and yearly radiator flushes. I had 2 Pintos. They got great gas mileage, too. Ford builds a good product. Great pics and fascinating comments. Rec'd!!

Have had a lot of cars but little luck with them
First car I owned was a red VW Beetle I begged off my parents for a graduation present (it was the family bug first). Had it for maybe two years, then it got crunched at a stoplight on a rainy road (car in front of me stopped, I stopped, car behind, a Yank Tank, didn't).
Replaced it with a white VW Beetle, which lasted a few more years until I moved up to Boston and some local jerks made off with it to go joyriding (and cracked it up).
Did without for a year or two, bar an old beater Dodge Dart driven for six months while visiting Florida, sold off on return.
Next there was a red Datsun 510 sedan with amazing powers of survival (rear-ended twice and kept running), but I let myself be talked into giving it to my little brother and he wrecked it (he had a record of wrecking cars and it got worse until he got clean and sober).
Replaced it with a green Datsun 510 station wagon that lasted until it was replaced in a trade-in with a yellow Honda Civic hatchback, which was good for a few more years until oil somehow got into the transmission fluid and ruined the engine.
Next there was a Dodge Colt hatchback, and I forget what the story was with that - something dismal I am sure.
Had to make do for a while with a cheap old beater Oldsmobile sedan which was really too big for me, and it was a relief when I was able to sell/give it to a friend who needed a big car for a big man (like, 6'4" and almost as broad).
For a while after that I drove a Plymouth Voyager hatchback which was a near-twin to the old Dodge Colt, except black, until the front axle shattered and I couldn't afford to fix it.
Once I was able to scrape together a bit of cash, I got the only car I ever had any real luck with, a red 1993 Suzuki Swift, which I bought nearly-new with a loan and drove for 22 years even though it had no AC and I was now in Virginia (not a good place to be without AC in the summer). But each year it was harder to get it past inspection, and finally they said I had to replace it.
So I'm currently driving a blue 2016 Honda Fit, which is more than enough for my limited needs (everything including work is within a few miles). But if gas prices keep going up....

You weren't kidding when you said you haven't had much luck with cars. The rising cost of gas was why I got rid of the Explorer and got a hybrid.

great pics GLS! Our family car 60-64 was a booger green Rambler Station Wagon. Had tall pointed shaped tail lights but they had enlarged the red lens to about 3" wide and 6" tall. Parents and 4 kids, week or two camping trips, all over CA and AZ in particular. Birders beat the shat out of cars. Four years was it.

Thanks for letting us join you at the car show. That Rambler wagon brings back memories. When I was a kid, one of the families in the neighborhood only owned Rambler/AMC cars. They had a wagon similar to the one you posted.

This reminds me of the old family wagon
It was a green Studebaker Wagoneer. The cool thing was how the rear roof slid forward,
effectively giving you a pick-up truck. Rear seats folded down for more storage.
Also had a Studebaker Lark about the same time (early 60's).
