If you're at the zoo this week look for the cutest little toddler around. That will be my granddaughter ; ). My daughter, her husband and their little cutie are visiting their cousins in SD and I'm sure a trip to the zoo will be on the agenda.

Oh my Janis, that looks so COOL and refreshing! I mean in temps. I'd die for that now. Looks like good spots for sandpipers. My saying is when life gives you mudflats, look for sandpipers. Beautiful light, depth of field, framing, and composition on that last pic. Very well done. Most excellent. Great work Janis! Thanks!

Your appreciation is very welcome, and in return I wish I could blow some of that coolness over to you.
It was chilly. I had to wear 4 layers and a wool beanie. Each day though by 1pm the sun shone in clear skies and was unusually warm for August (the equivalent of the northern hemispheres February). July was the rainiest and close to the warmest on record. A few days of morning fog is not unusual for winter here, but three days in a row and taking until 1pm to clear is unusual. Because the nights are clear it is very cold, in the 40s. The warmer sunshine hours must do something different with the climate?
Stay your cool self even in the heat ; ).

The biggest challenge to photographing at the zoo is getting good shots that don't show the zoo. Some exhibits are easy, others, not so much.

Here are some bugs... I may have posted these before...
Cicada are often bright green when they first emerge before the exoskeleton hardens.
We are hearing a few now, a sign of the dog days of summer to me.

female Dobsonfly on gas pump hose
A Halichtid (R), a type of native bee, and a Flower-Scarab (L) on Blue Mistflower Eupatorium.
Placosternus sps. (c.f. erythyopus or somesuch), a type of Cerambycid (Longhorn) beetle.
apologizes if you have seen them before...
These are the only bugs around, in photos from prior years when there were insects here. The exceptional drought has wiped them out.
