Happy Friday every one. As always, post any photos you like.
Usually when I visit the Balboa Park rose garden I'm there looking for bugs and insects, but from time to time I focus on the roses instead. These are just a few of the different types of roses in the garden and two views of the garden.
GREAT photos as always SP! Those gardens look great. Birders can often be found at botanical gardens. L.A. has several actually outstanding County operated gardens. The hundred year old L.A. Arboretum in Arcadia is world class. Right up the street from Santa Anita racetrack. There is one called Rancho something out by Claremont supposed to be very good. The one I used to hang out at was the South Coast Botanical Gardens in Rolling Hills on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, very nice too.
I love that 3rd rose with the yellow with red border, WOW! What a beauty! Too busy to get books out for the red and black fly... but those are a widespread group with lots of similar looking species very like that.
Will try to get by later with a pic...

Some of the "heirloom" roses that have been preserved have scent that you can detect clear across the lawn - Rosa centifolia ("Cabbage Rose") and closely related variants, for instance. They only bloom once per year, but that once is well worth the wait. They are also very hardy and disease resistant, which is why they are still around after some some 500 years.

The good news. It doesn't smell like ketchup or mustard. The bad news. It doesn't have much fragrance at all.

The lyrics are interesting. Together, the music and lyrics create an interesting reflection of something that lives strongly in many Kiwis regardless of culture. The comment under the youtube video gives a bit more understanding.

pics, Sp, and jb. Brings back memories of my long dead grandmother's rose garden in So. FL. She grew all sorts of roses including blue ones which actually were a lavender color. The area was very wet, and didn't drain well; but she figured out how to grow them. And the smell......... coupled with a gardenia bush she had.........Heavenly. Rec'd!!
