Friday Night Photos Mix & Match Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 07/15/2022 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. As always, post any photos you like.
On Monday the bird watching group I'm in had it's monthly outing at Mission Trails Regional Park. I think somebody forgot to let the birds know we were going to be there because we didn't see that many birds this month and most of what we did see was not in camera range. Oh well. Some days you bite the bear and some days the bear bites you. At least a few other critters were good enough stop by and say hi.

Hi pixelators
Hey SP! Outstanding photos! Love that Lorquin's Admiral. A western species, I don't get to see them any more. Looks fairly like a California Sister. The easy way to remember them is that the Sister looks very different above, versus below. Lorquin's Admiral is the same, above or below.
Those whiptails are beautiful lizards in breeding colors. And faster than you can run. They get up on their hind legs and friggin' fly. I think 25-30 mph range. We have some here with salmon pink throats and metallic blue underparts (Spotted and Six-lined). But the color is only a couple or few months of the year. They used to be Cnemidophorus genus, but I think they were changed a while back to Aspidophilus or somesuch. I can't keep up with taxonomists in every field. They have nothing to do but reclassify things, and I'm getting old.
For those that don't know cormorants don't have oil glands, so their plumage is not waterproof, so they get waterlogged and have to hang out to dry to be able to fly again. Anhingas also have no oil gland.
There is a Gray-tailed (formerly known as Polynesian - for where it winters) Tattler over at San Diego Bay now, second CA record, first one was a one hour bird in 1980 or '81 which I chased and missed (!). Directions are at the San Diego Region Birding list/group at Google or Yahoo groups. It is in an off-limits nesting area for other things, people are kayaking to it (!).
The various birding groups/lists are compiled here: https://www.aba.org/birding-news/
then at the top in window for lists scroll down to CA-San Diego Region for the latest in local bird news, with daily updates for rarities. Lots of great ideas on where the local action is. Most areas have a list there folks no matter where you are...
Thanks for the great pix SP! And hosting! Will see if I can by with something later, gotta work now.

Hi, dystopian
Thanks and much appreciation for all the information you add.
The whiptail was a first for me. It's always fun when you find something new. I can't run 25-30 mph, but I can walk 4 miles in an hour.
Hope you have time to stop by later. Don't work to hard.

Hi dystopian
I just had to look for an image of a lizard with a salmon pink throat and metallic blue underparts. It sounds like this one ...

You sure have interesting wildlife in your parts.
Awesome picture of the reflection one
If you’re aren’t interested in selling them you might enter them in photo contests! I’d vote for you.

Thank you , Snoopy
In my experience entering a photo contest is only good for one thing, finding out judges don't like your photos.

Who likes to be judged?
You're safe here ; ).
Thank you, Janis
I don't mind my photos being judged. I just wish there was more consistency among the judges on what they do and don't like.

I suppose they don't give feedback.
I hope they at least give a clear definition of what they are looking for?
Hi Social
Thank you as always for your expertly captured photos, and for the great music. I loved hearing Ridgetop again. It's a great song, musically and lyrically.
Here are some Nikau Palm fronds and Kawakawa today after all the rain. It seems like a good match to the song.
What's with all the orange spotted targets ; ).
Be well and stay strong everyone.
Hi, Janis
Beautiful shot of the Nikau and Kawakawa. It looks like a great place to sit and be one with nature.

It is when it's not wintery,
and a cool, refreshing spot in summer.
Checking in as usual.
Speaking of great photos, I've been all hyped over the first ones from the James Webb ST.
You all have equally great ones courtesy of our gorgeous blue planet. Rec'd!!

Hi, orlbucfan
I've seen a few of the first batch of photos from the JWST. They look amazing.
