Ear Worm

Jerry Jeff Walker made an album around 1991. It featured some country, with a couple of songs that were rock, one with a very jazzy sound.
So, while I drove on a country road, Dear One was fiddling with the music, and we listened to the entire album, and this song twice.
Since then, we can't lose it from our heads.
Aye yi yi...
What's your ear worm today?

I like Tom Russell
He's a really good song writer IMO.

It was my favorite of the two, of course!

It was yesterday...
Great song JtC!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
I heard this John Prine & Iris DeMint song the other day
[video:https://youtu.be/1bRt13ygKwE]and no matter how many times I've heard it (I have the Bruised Orange Album, bought it new) it sticks around. "In Spite of Ourselves"
https://youtu.be/1bRt13ygKwE
Here's his last recorded song. "I Remember Everything". This guy was, and still is, a gift to the world.

In spite of Ourselves
I honestly had never heard of Prine. My Dear One is a huge fan.

He was discovered by Steve Goodman & he got Kris Kristofferson
He would put out a lot of albums after this album got such a reception. I had two close Vietnam Vet friends and when they heard the album they had to play it over and over, they learned the words and sang the chorus whenever they heard it.
There's many more great Prine albums, this was just the beginning.
Sam Stone came home to his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas
And the time that he served had shattered all his nerves
And left a little shrapnel in his knee
But the morphine eased the pain
And the grass grew round his brain
And gave him all the confidence he lacked
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back
[Chorus]
There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin', I suppose
Little pictures have big ears
Don't stop to count the years
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios
Mmm...
[Verse 2]
Sam Stone's welcome home didn't last too long
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing when he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose
While the kids ran around wearin' other people's clothes
[Chorus]
There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin', I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears
Don't stop to count the years
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios
Mmm...
[Verse 3]
Sam Stone was alone when he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G.I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill
[Chorus]
There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin', I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears
Don't stop to count the years
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios
Mmm...

I dropped well away from country
Around here, growing up, country was all you heard, sort of forced on you. I was glad to leave it behind. I returned to it with The Outlaws. I managed to miss Prine's entire career.
His writing is genius.

Homeless In America
MARIE
by Townes Van Zandt
I stood in line and left my name
took about six hours or so
Well, the man just grinned like it was all a game
said they'd let me know
I put in my time on the the Pocono line
shut down two years ago
I was staying at the Mission till I met Marie
now I can't stay there no more
Fella 'cross town said he's lookin' for a man
to move some old cars around
maybe me and Marie could find a burned-out
van and do a little settlin' down
Aw, but I'm just dreamin', I ain't got no ride
and the junkyard's a pretty good ways
that job's about a half week old besides
it'd be gone now anyway
Unemployment said I got no more checks
and they showed me to the hall
my brother died in Georgia some time ago
I got no one left to call
Summer wasn't bad below the bridge
a little short on food that's all
Now I gotta get Marie some kind of coat
we're headed down into fall
I used to play the mouth harp pretty good
hustled up a little dough
but I got drunk and I woke up rolled
a couple of months ago
they got my harp and they got my dollar
them low life so and so's
harps cost money and I ain't got it
it's my own fault I suppose
The Pocono's down but the Chesapeake's runnin'
two freights everyday
if it was just me I'd be headed south
but Marie can't catch no train
She's got some pain and she thinks it's a baby,
says we gotta wait and see
in my heart I know it's a little boy
hope he don't end up like me
Well, the man's still grinnin' says he lost my file
I gotta stand in line again
I want to kill him but I just say no
I had enough of that line my friend
I head back to the bridge, its getting kinda cold
I'm feelin' too low down to lie
I guess I'll just tell Marie the truth
hope she don't break down and cry
Marie she didn't wake up this morning
she didn't even try
she just rolled over and went to Heaven
my little boy safe inside
I laid them in the sun where somebody'd find them
caught a Chesapeak on the fly
Marie will know I'm headed south
so's to meet me by and by
Marie will know I'm headed south
so to meet me by and by

It was the 1970s. I remember thinking, “We’re still pretty free in America if they can play that on the radio.”

The late and great Guy Clark's Always trust Your Cape
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6bZ37nexSY&list=RDGMEMYQNnkCeucvXPZmore..."Eight years old with flour sack cape
Tied all around his neck
He climbed up on the garage
Figurin' what the heck
He screwed his courage up so tight
The whole thing comes unwound
He got a runnin' start and bless his heart
He headed for the ground
Chorus
He's one of those who knows that life
Is just a leap of faith
Spread your arms and hold your breath
Always trust your cape
All grown up with a flour sack cape
Tied all around his dream
He's full of piss and vinegar
He's bustin' at the seams
He licked his finger and checked the wind
It's gonna be do or die
He wasn't scared of nothin', Boys
He was pretty sure he could fly
Chorus
Old and grey with a flour sack cape
Tied all around his head
He's still jumpin' off the garage
And will be till he's dead
All these years the people said
He's actin' like a kid
He did not know he could not fly
So he did.."

LYRICS
I'm goin' down to the Greyhound station
Gonna buy a ticket to ride
I'm gonna find that lady with two or three kids
And sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around
About two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Sing my song for the people I meet
And get along with it all
Where the people say "y'all"
Sing a song with a friend
Change the shape that I'm in
And start playin' again
I'd like to stay
But I might have to go to start over again
I might go back down to Texas
Or go to somewhere that I've never been
And get up in the mornin' and go out at night
And I won't have to go home
Get used to bein' alone
Change the words to this song
And start singin' again
I'm tired of runnin' 'round lookin' for answers
To questions that I already know
I could build me a castle with memories
Just to have somewhere to go
Count the days and the nights that it takes
To get back in the saddle again
Feed the pigeons some clay
Turn the night into day
And start talkin' again, when I know what to say
I'm goin' down to the Greyhound station
Gonna buy a ticket to ride
I'm gonna find that lady with two or three kids
And sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around
About two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Play my song for the people I meet
And get along with it all
Where the people say "y'all"
Feed the pigeons some clay
Turn the night into day
And start talkin' again, when I know what to say

Dear One DID IT AGAIN!
He joined me on the front porch, started tapping on the arm rest of his chair...his rhythm put this into my ear via an ear worm:
