Friday Night Photos Birds: Foreign and Domestic Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 06/03/2022 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday Everyone. As always, post any photos you like.
Last week I went to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. My intention was to photograph the large mammals. As luck would have it most of them either were not out or were to far away for good photos. Thankfully the birds were good enough to cooperate. The foreign birds are year round residents of the park. The domestic birds are non-residents come and go as they please.

Hi Social
When the cats are away the birds will play. Thank you for your wonderful bird images. The superb starling is very superb.
Rainy days ...
Have fun everyone

Thanks el
The forest is totally evergreen, but very few are podocarps.
You be well too.
Hi, Janis
Some rainy days would be welcome here on the west coast.
Maybe the kid in the video could do his rain dance here.

We used to have more than enough rain to share
It's different these days. Cute rain dance, no ; ).
I love your new avatar n ?t
Thanks, Janis.
It was my only tiger shot of the day.

Yes dystopian, it was raining heavily at that moment.
I will try to capture more clearly the rainfall itself next time. I’ll hopefully have lots of opportunity these next few months.
Good evening Social, great photos and great birds.
I've got some furriners here, some with a minimally capable Pentax film unit and some with a Canon A40. A Jacamar from Belize, really got a rise out of our guide who didn't expect to see it, it may have been a first for him, I can't recall -
This is something of a pas de several, from Costa Rica IIRC, but maybe Belize too:
Trogon from Belize
Ocellated Turkey caught wing drumming - Belize
And a bit better Canon, but still a pocket camera, in Ecuador, bird is either a lancebill or a swordbill can't recall for sure, they're both found in the Andes, but the latter has a bill longer than its body (it's the only known bird that does) and I think that's one of them.

Evening, EL.
Nice selection of birds. The second shot looks like a mix of roseate spoonbills and snowy egrets.

You got the IDs right, something startled them just as I
started to shoot.

What a beautiful photo of the Jacamar,
and what a beautiful memory of that experience. Thank you for your photos.
Thank you.

Thanks Dysto. Yeah, I'm with you on the Slaty Tailed
Trogon, thanks for jogging the memory. All my foreign field guides are buried pretty deep since no near term planned usage, sadly enough.
Also think you're right on the Jacamar. I just looked at beaucoups photos on the internet from e-bird and some other sources, and the only near look-alike is white chinned which is only in S. America, mostly Ecuador, and while I've been to Ecuador, with the same guide even, I'm pretty sure that bird was from Chan Chich in Belize, I can almost envision the exact spot, I have a tarantula pic from very nearby.

A pleasant surprise at our motel door
at a recent stay in the Texas Hill Country.
Here are the baby barn swallows on Day 1.
This is Day 3, mama feeding them with us standing a foot away. (yes, that is a thumb in the corner of the picture, not Godzilla.)
This shows how grown up they were by Day 4, while we were loading up to go home.
If it isn't cats to feed, a 3 legged raccoon, a 1-legged pigeon, it is babies we have no way to feed. Travel is always interesting. Please forgive the cell phone quality. There was no plan for beautiful babies when we packed!

Hi, OTC
A pleasant surprise indeed. They grow so fast. Before you know it they will be all grown up and have kids of their own.

Thanks otc, for the wonder-full sequence of swallows
Some of the best things in life are pleasantly unexpected. Enjoy the weekend. I'm off to prepare for company.
Enjoy your company janis b!
We have the rudimentary pictures forever reminding us of that life's event.
A lovely memory of a special trip.

Always a great morale booster!
I look forward to you all every weekend.
Sp: I noticed your Carlin quote. Have you checked out Judd Apatow's terrific documentary on him? I saw it on HBO recently. Carlin was absolutely fearless, one of the greatest political comics who ever lived. I'm including Mark Twain in that hallowed list. Anywho, Rec'd!!

Good morning, orlbucfan
I don't watch tv and have no cable or satellite service so I have not seen the HBO documentary. I have had the good fortune of seen him live twice. The first time in 1975 and the second time in 2001.
