Happy Friday everyone. As always, post any photos you like.
Didn't get out with the camera this week due to a nasty case of food poison so here's some leftovers from last weeks bug hunt. Hope everyone else is well and healthy.
@QMS
Gotta love those movies from the early days of the atomic age. The idea of radiation making you shrink instead of making you huge was an interesting change of pace.
Cool mantis video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for hosting SP! Great bug shots.

Beautiful photos Janis! Awesome shots! Thanks!! Hope all is well!
When I look at your bugs I think what wonderful characters they'd make in a children's book or how inspiring for designers.
The whole of the week has been blue skies and clear evenings.
Happy mother's day to all you mother's, and children of mothers.

Outstanding fly photos SP! Beautiful work man! There is no end to Diptera diversity. I think about 17,000 species in N. America. Compare that with 1000 species of birds. And a bunch of the weirdest life cycles there are. Most folks only know the bothersome varieties of flies. There are a bunch of beauties. Great song too!
Sorry about the gastro... Be better sooner!

I knew there were a lot of species of flies, but I had no idea there were that many. As for the 1000 bird species, over 400 of them can be found in San Diego county.

@Socialprogressive
Hey S.P. Actually San Diego County and Los Angeles County are the two top counties in the U.S. for bird species diversity. They are the only two counties with 500 species known to have occurred. I think both have only been over the line a decade and barely so at that. For a half century since 60's, S.D. was the top U.S. County. LA got past it a decade ago or so, they are both in the lowest 500's, just a frog hair over the line. The top dog birder in CA for over a half-century is Guy McCaskie, from Imperial Bch. I birded with him a number of times. He is considered the godfather of modern CA birding. A birding guru. I used to love it when I found something he didn't know about at Pt. Loma. LOL
Of the thousand species known from America, probably near a hundred are waif vagrants that occurred once. Another hundred occurred maybe 2-3 times. Accidentals. About 600-650 species breed in America. About 750-800 occur in any given year with 50 or so being accidental vagrants.

I was not familiar with Guy McCaskie so I looked him up. He's still in the area and posted the list of 110 birds species seen or heard while he was at the Salton Sea last Wednesday.

I’m still traumatized by the number of them that I met today that cut my trip off. Sam went outside this morning and was immediately swarmed by billions of tiny gnats and she turned white. Just opening the door and getting them off her and jumping back inside saw millions of the little varmits getting inside the trailer and then they swarmed all over us. I’ve been home for 6 hours and I’m still traumatized by the event. Plus they were able to squeeze through the screens and come in and have a party at our expense.
They do warn you about them at the gate, but say no refunds because of them. I had no idea how bad they got before or I’d never have planned going this late. I saw one maintenance guy wearing a head mask and thought of getting one but that wouldn’t help Sam. If someone told me about this I’d probably say, what’s the big deal they’re just bugs, but trust me they were bad.
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about I went out to antelope island with my trailer to see how all the upgrades worked. I planned on staying till Sunday but yea gawd’s if I’m swarmed inside there was no way I could stay 2 more nights. I’m sure it just gets worse.
@snoopydawg
Sorry your trip was cut short. The Antelope Island website has a note cautioning about the biting gnats and that bug spray won't keep them away. Sounds like some pretty nasty gnats.

that bug spray doesn’t work. I bathed myself in it to no avail. But even the warning doesn’t go far enough to describe how bad they are. It’s like a horror movie where the bugs descend and devour one’s body. And they buzz your ears like mosquitoes just before they do it. I can’t believe how freaked out I still am by this. I paid $20 extra for Sam to be able to be outside without any others around and I don’t get that back. Oh well live and learn. The day before wasn’t too bad so she got to have a good time.

11:46:11 AM on the dirt patch pole clock. It is an hour off since we sprang back, would be perpendicular at noon. Oak tree is getting all up in the wires now. There are new occupants in the squirrel nest way up top. Acorn woodpecker and oak titmouse all around, black white phoebe, schizophrenic homeless guy, the usual.
---
I'm sorry to hear about the poisoned food, Socialprogressive. Thanks a lot for still hosting FNP, and the awesome bug shots. I hope your guts feel better soon. Even better than before why not. Was it an egg salad sandwich? lol don't answer, my TV lint trap. Parasites Lost
---
Cats and dawg ticks. My neighbor's cat has been dropping off ticks, found three crawling around these past couple of weeks. OMG they are creepy. I forgot how to kill a tick they don't drown, not even in soapy water. cringe Cat has a new flea collar now, PU it stinks up the whole room but at least he has no ticks attached. His brother got killed but he still stops by once a week or so. Gecko is the name of the wall climbing kitty, he appears on my deck so I call him Decko.
