Sunday Open Thread 02-01-15
Submitted by JtC on Sun, 02/01/2015 - 9:51am
Good morning folks. I got very ill last night right in the middle of hosting the Evening Blues diary that I do on the weekends. I got so sick I had to cut out half way through but I feel a bit better this morning so forgive me for not including any news or youtubes. I'll just leave this thread open to whatever's on your minds. Thanks.

Guten morgen
I'll watch the game but I won't watch when they bring out the communist style military parade and sing the nationalist song we're all
supposed to blindly sing. I heard one commentator once telling Active military and Veterans to salute. I'm going, screw you, I aint' saluting nothing,
I did my time.
Morning Al...
I hear ya' man. The propaganda is thick and constant. Television is the most potent propaganda device ever invented and sometimes i wonder if they aren't using subliminal messaging or something even newer and more nefarious to suck the brains out of unsuspecting sheeples. That may sound kind of woo-woo to some folks but nothing would surprise me nowadays. Heh, i just momentarily flashed back to Docudharma days of discussing shit like this with you and edger and inky, good old days.
Ya, here's to edger.
It just gets worse all the time. People just keep wanting to one up themselves or others so it just keeps going over the top.
Maybe that's good, we'll get burnt out, finally jump that shark and start all over. Like Planet of the Apes.
Have you seen...
the new Planet of the Apes series? They're actually pretty good.
You can't blame 9/11 for all of the jingoism
The pageantry surrounding Super Bowl XXV, which took place shortly before Desert Storm, was straight out of Leni Riefenstahl. And before that, there was the gigantic yellow ribbon around the Superdome to honor the Iranian hostages who had come home.

Ok, technical query -
How often do I have to actually do something in order to remain logged in? Anybody know?
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
What do you mean?
You keep getting bumped out?
The question is pre-emptive.
We go into the offline world often, for overnights to two days to two weeks or so. I noted that the old site seemed to have a short trigger inactivity timeout and was reminded by something yesterday of my old trick using chron to hoax the inactivity timeout at work decades ago. It occurred to me to make a list of key sites to pop into via phone, as needed, to stay alive when offline and this was one.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
The old site...
had a setting in the admin backend for setting the timeout length, I did lengthen it though. This site has no timeout settings and shouldn't boot anyone, if that does happen it's more likely something on the user's end rather than the site, or am I misunderstanding what you're asking?
Sounds good. Problem solved, or, non-existent, actually.

heh
From for what its worth dept. I stay logged on. In other words, when I shut down, I do not log off this site. What that means is when I fire up the computer the next morning, I am automatically logged on here. However, it is my understanding that if I am not active on this site for a certain length of time (5 min?), I will not appear to others as one of the users who is currently online. Maybe Johnny can clarify that assumption.

Yeah...
the 5 minute time frame is about right, it shows back up as soon as you refresh or hit the home button, etc.
Help! Another "technical" query/comment . . .
Yikes!
I just came from checking on diaries written on "No Lables" and the DLC/corporatist Dems over a period of about 26 months.
Almost 50 links, mostly to the DLC and/or No Labels, are now dead.
A lot of this material had not been "Tweeted," only because I was reluctant to bring attention to the material this far ahead of the Presidential race (out of concern that Dem Party apparatchik would kill these links in advance of the 2016 Primary).
Clearly, that was a stupid judgment on my part.
This is in addition to approximately 30 broken links--including WJC calling for a "Mnistry Of Truth" (of all things) on the CNBC Business Channel, from other blogs.
Anyhoo, JTC. I also have checked out posting "Tweets" at Drupal websites.
I think I know the problem (maybe).
I'm thinking that there was a "format module" here, early on. (Filtered HTML, Full HTML, HTML Tags (Old School), Etc.)
If so, this may be the key.
It is at some Drupal blogs, anyway.
Am I correct that I saw one here, JTC (CL)?
Thanks.

Mollie...
I have to get the EB diary for tonight knocked out right now, but I'll get back to you later with your answer. Right now tweets can be embedded, the images and videos wont display though. I can't enable Full HTML or Filtered HTML for everybody or there'll be nothing but confusing pandemonium and I don't wish to unleash that on myself. I've already added all the tags that's needed but the images and videos still wont display. It's a matter of installing a widget and it involves editing text files. There is a module that will do it but it's not an easy matter to install, anyway I'll get back to you later.
Okay, I can appreciate that, JTC.
Hey, I posted the long-winded reply to Tim (on the Drupal HTML Code) BEFORE I read your comment. Sorry!
I did not intend to be overbearing on this point.
I'll have my blog upgrade completed within a couple of weeks--it is a "public/private" blog--which means that I can post both types of material within the same blog.
So if push comes to shove, I will post links to my blog in order to post 'more sensitive' video/audio material.
BTW, many of my Tweets are "Retweets," and do not include video or audio material.
Anyhoo, JTC, thanks for working on this issue.

Browser settings
Are the likely culprit.

Actually, in Drupal
there are various types of HTML code (if that's what it would be called).
I've written it down--the variations.
From my recollection, when this site was launched, it had the module that I'm referring to--IOW, "we commenters" could change this setting within this blog (obviously, for our own diaries and/or comments--not universally).
That's where the problem lies, I'm almost certain.
I'm basing this on the fact that other Drupal Blogs, at first when I couldn't post a "Tweet," Admin had me change the "type" of HTML settings, and "Voila!," the Tweet worked beautifully.
I'm hoping that it will be as simple as that at this Drupal Blog.
And I think that I recall seeing the drop down box here, earlier on.
Mollie
(Which is not to say that those settings can't affect anything. But my settings are the same now, as they've been while I've posted Tweets at the other Drupal blogs. So, I have to figure that this is not my problem, here.)

JTC: Sunday's EB
Is there a place here for a "news bin?" I would like to recommend an article for Sunday's EB about creativity.

Hope you feel better JTC.

Good afternoon Marilyn...
I'm feeling much better, thanks. I can make a diary a "sticky" that keeps it on top of the list all the time but I'm not sure I want to do that, I like the flow of the diaries we have now. I'll look into making a dedicated page for NewsBin entries, if I can do that I'll make an announcement. Thanks for the link, I'll include it tonight.
oh dear
hub just texted Kid that apparently Ted Cruz just arrived at the restaurant where he plays the Jazz Brunch, lol.
Go Hawks. well back to work. hope you feel better soon JtC

Thanks LL...
Ted "Mr. Haney" Cruz listening to jazz, I thought the Taliban hated music.
LL, how did I know it was you without
even checking? I got it after "Kid"
Nice to see you and how are you and what's new?

Shit! Hope you're feeling better.
By the way, anybody who is close to DallasDoc or CroneWit or aliasalias, I'd really like them to join us here. I've attempted to contact them without success so far. Hoping we'll hear from them soon.
