Where Have All Our Allies Gone?

long time passing.....

https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/23/politics/saudi-ballistic-missiles-china/i...

That's right Saudi Arabia, ballistic missiles, and China. Not the details that are stunning in this matter. More important is that China and Saudi Arabia are doing business.

Here's another:The United Arab Republic and the US have cancelled/postponed talks regarding a $23 Billion deal for UAE to purchase F-35 fighter jets.

And instead, France signs a $18 Billion dollar deal with the UAE purchasing similar weaponry..

Remember that canceled France/Australia purchase submarine deal? In which Australia signs instead with the US for a deal where the subs will not be avaiable for 2 decades?

Yeah---Karma's a bitch.

And of course, that Chinese port now operating in Haifa, Israel

All happening while we are distracted from encroaching authoritarianism by dopey partisan politics.

Sad and scary is how the US will react to all of this. We don't seem to have much nuance.

@Dawn's Meta Nuance----not so much.

to be the least reliable "ally" in the world today. We abandon foundational policy principles at a whim, and the last few administrations have accelerated our rate of abrogation of treaties and agreements, all while sending overt and covert forces to destabilize even our closest partners.

We are the 900-pound gorilla, to be sure. However, even such a beast can be taken down by a pack of smaller predators- once they piss off said predators enough. "The Mouse That Roared" didn't go far enough.

Twice bitten, permanently shy.

@usefewersyllables up to your optimist note about small predators being victorious.

More likely is that the weight of our overwhelming hubris will sink us into a very deep hole.

I want your take to be correct and I fear that it will not be.

enemies everyone. When will we ever learn?

The good thing about it is it hastens the collapse of our evil empire.

@Lookout Long before we ever learn.

The collapse will be horrific and I cannot call it a good thing. But if you see it that way, it is a bit cheering, I guess.

@NYCVG
a horrific collapse is our only chance of getting our country back, sad to say.
Instead of wringing our hands and just watching shit happen, we should be planning for the post collapse world, where we take back control from the oligarths and uber wealthy families that hold such control over every aspect of our lives.
You and I both know after the collapse they will be the first ones insisting they "know" the way forward.
What we should realize right now is the first ones stepping forward will be the first ones we need to get rid of, post haste.

I would think none of the above. Those sycophants you are mentioning were survivors and it is nothing to be ashamed of to try to survive.

I wonder if I would be a happier camper on this site, if I would understand any of you.

@humphrey America is like a washed-up celebrity, a trashy kulak who lacked the inner power to avoid letting the sudden rush of wealth and fame go to its head and ruin it all on drugs, greed, and wanton dickholery - now it's wandering around in a stupor of Korsakoff syndrome, bitching at people for not loving it anymore, no longer being what it used to be nor giving what it used to give yet expecting others to still treat it like they used to...and somehow having no clue why.

Pathetic. Even Elvis went out with more dignity.

Cruel and despicable, too; we know what happened...it did NOT need to be this way. This is NOT who we really are.

But China and Saudi Arabia have been doing friendly business for some time.

And it is all about business, the business of infrastructure and trade that connects all nations so that they can engage economically. The US was invited and is the one nation that refused to join the AIIB (Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank), which is the global entity that is making these investments in the future possible.

Let's not mistake business for politics. Any US ally can choose to engage with China in business development, just as Israel and much of Europe is doing. China does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. In fact, China wrote that into the UN Charter when the UN was forming. Non interference is an ancient core principle in China's political philosophy. When China does business with a country, it does not arrive riding on the back of its military. China businessmen are currently helping both Afghanistan and Pakistan with their infrastructure development, working directly with the Taliban to connect Afghanistan to the rest of the world to establish sustainable economic growth through trade. China's military is not there shooting people for sport or digging burn pits to foul the air.

The US doesn't know how to 'be' in the world anymore.

The US still thinks Africa, South America, and the rest of the Global South is a sure thing that they can control and exploit. But is the US going to show up and build high speed rail for them along with modern ports to facilitate trade and lift them out of poverty? Countries in the Global South have already done deals with the World Bank and the IMF. They already know what that looks like.

The US doesn't know how to 'think' about the world anymore.

China knows that if these undeveloped countries succeed economically, then the Chinese people can live in peace and happiness, and they can enjoy many friendships around the world. That is the goal of the Chinese people.

@Pluto's Republic
who share that vision of helping our neighbors.
It is not unheard of. Let us develop together sounds saner.
Unfortunately the present rulers do not want to hear of
cooperation, compromise or contemplating a world with
others sharing the joys of living without US rules.
We are not only fucking up the balance of the world
we are aggressively fucking up our own future by allowing
this regime to control options. Sorry for the French. I get
angry sometimes.
