Friday Night Photos Bokeh edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 09/03/2021 - 5:00pm
Welcome one and all to Friday night photos. Post um if you got um.
Last week dystopian was trying to remember a Japanese word that means "pleasingly out of focus background". The word he was thinking of is bokeh. There is ongoing debate in the photo world about what constitutes pleasingly out of focus.
Here are a few examples of bokeh.

Wow SP fabulous. I think we used to call it
depth of field. iirc.
A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit. Allegedly Greek, but more possibly fairly modern quote.

Thank you, DM
Depth of field refers to the area in a photo that is in focus. Bokeh refers to the area in the background of a photo that is out of focus, and to the visual quality it brings to the photo.

Beautiful examples Sp.
And Dawn's is correct on depth of field.
It's also known as foreground or background.
An easy and extremely remarkable way to highlight your subject.
Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.
Thank you, pricknick
You're right, Pricknick, using depth of field is a great way to highlight your subject.

correction
Foreground and background are not synonyms for depth of field.
In order to understand what DEPTH OF FIELD is, replace the word "field" with FOCUS. The depth of field is the depth of focus. It is what is in focus in any given frame/image.
The background is only in the depth of field IF and WHEN it is IN FOCUS. Anything fore or aft of the depth of field is not in the the depth of field. Nothing out of focus is in the depth of field.

Good evening sp. Great photos, as usual.
I wonder if part of the concept of bokeh is that it is intentional? I mean, I have no idea how many photos of mine have out of focus background. My personal specialty, of course, is for everything to be out of focus (brokeh?). That said, I got a couple of decent wildlife pictures on August 28:

Thanks. Definitely far afield for me, I thought
white lined which are in the Bay Area, but you got me to look deeper into the matter. Northern California sphinxes include Erinnyis ello - Ello Sphinx - Hodges#7834, here: https://bugguide.net/node/view/6570 among other places. I got the name from this and some other place that I've lost already https://www.inaturalist.org/check_lists/258971-Sphingidae-of-California. This page has one that really looks a lot like my pic. https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Erinnyis-ello

Thank you, EL
I get a whole lot of photos with brokeh too. Now that dystopian has stopped by , I can say nice looking sphinx moth instead of nice looking moth. I haven't seen sphinx moths around here in a long time.

nice bokeh S.P.!
It bugged me so much I went and looked it back up, couldn't stand not remembering the word. Yes since it is art, it is in the eye of the beholder. I like the plain pastel out of focus generally more than the busy one. I think it puts more focus on the subject that way, whereas the busy one can be distracting. But, eye of beholder and all...
Thanks for bringing bokeh into the open!

Thank you, dystopian.
Definitely agree with you about eye of the beholder and all.

Take that bokeh!
Here is some bokeh. With dragons especially I consciously work on it when possible. Birds too offer good opportunites for great bokeh.
In this case I hung fabric to create my own as needed
To answer EL's question, it can be intentional or not, and sometimes the not turn out great! Seabirds on a pelagic trip are great for bokeh, and shorebirds or ducks but you have to get down low at their level. Often one might move around trying to get the right bokeh behind a bird or dragonfly. We tend to work hard at concentrating on the subject matter in the image, and much can be added by thinking about that background, often out of focus. But which can be used to artistic advantage.

Nice dragons,
hummers, and bokeh, dystopian.
Nothing wrong with adding an artificial background to get the result you want. It's art and there are no rules to art.

I'm usually in documentarian mode
and concerned with getting one or two really good shots of the subject be for it flies, walks or crawls away or else the shadows shift.

Yep, also handy when challenged by e-bird or
iNaturalist or a records committee. I once had iNaturalist challenge me on a band-tailed pigeon, even though they are known to migrate through here and, luckily, I had a picture just because I had none in my collection of "boids i dun seen". Unmistakable yellow feets.

Hi you all
I’m really enjoying being a spectator of friday night photos.
Thank you Social and all for carrying on as usual. It is a pleasure for me to see everyone’s photos and read your comments from a slightly distanced perspective. It starts to feel fresh and innovative again.
See you later
Hi, Janis.
I'll do my best to follow in your footsteps hosting.
