International Women's Day

Cheshire_Fire_and_Rescue

-

International Women's Day, while not recognized in the US, has its origins in a 1908 march of 15,000 women in New York City demanding better pay, shorter hours and voting rights.  For a while after that there was a National Women's Day organized by the evil Socialist Party of the US. It eventually went international and even recognized by the UN (but not the US).

Per the wiki,

International Women's Day is celebrated on 8 March every year around the world. It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights.

After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day in New York City on February 28, 1909, German delegates Clara Zetkin, Käte Duncker, Paula Thiede and others proposed at the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference that "a special Women's Day" be organized annually.[4] After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there.[5] The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted by the feminist movement in about 1967. The United Nations began celebrating the day in 1977.

It has its own web page:https://www.internationalwomensday.com/ , which I guess the US can't block, as well as a United Nations sub-page: https://www.un.org/en/observances/womens-day , ditto.

WAR!

  There is one day each year, December 25th, on which many purport to celebrate "Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men".  Well, this ain't it McGee, this is one of the other 364 (or 5) during which we celebrate, perpetuate, commit and commit ourselves to WAR!, endless and exalted.  The foundation of our economy, the employer of ever so many and the source of our eternal pride, WAR!  So remember, though it may not be good for living things, it is what keeps this country running and keeps its ruling elites happy, so hooray for war!

Have a happy day women (and men, boys, and girls)!

Sunny and cool here this AM, but headed toward 70 this pm. Time to start summer seedlings. Got all the spring crops out and now have shelf space in the grow room (which is actually the mechanical room with the water heater and so on). Always something growing on.

Been a week since the last rain. I've got to water the new trees today. I keep buckets under the well house eave and have enough stored in those for the job. Rain due next Monday...unusual here in March to be so dry.

Dr. John is finally on the ivermectin train...

He recognized off the bat that there's no profit in it and therefore no push to use it to save lives and stop the spread. Whatta world.

Well thanks for the OT and music!

Been trying to think of a place for a permanent,seed starting and microgreens growing area for w while now and I think that you just gave me an idea. We have no mechanical room and the water heater is in cold uninsulated garage with cement floor, but shelving above said water heater with grow lamps could be answer. Thanks.

seeing your avatar reminded me of the image of Kilroy, is all.

Per the wiki --

According to one story, German intelligence found the phrase on captured American equipment. This led Adolf Hitler to believe that Kilroy could be the name or codename of a high-level Allied spy. At the time of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, it was rumored that Stalin found "Kilroy was here" written in the VIP bathroom, prompting him to ask his aides who Kilroy was.[2][11] War photographer Robert Capa noted a use of the phrase at Bastogne in December 1944: "On the black, charred walls of an abandoned barn, scrawled in white chalk, was the legend of McAuliffe's GIs: KILROY WAS STUCK HERE."[12]

Dunno how to bring about a hedgehog day, it would have to be an UN thing, the US would never implement such a thing. If one had fought on the US side in one of our innumerable wars, per haps, or it it could be mass marketed like peanuts or salt water taffy, then we could get at least an unofficial one here, but just because they can be cute won't do it. For starts, they ain't even 'Merkin, but are furrin.

Oil prices dip below zero as producers forced to pay to dispose of excess

Today: Oil rises to $67 per barrel, highest in one year

"Russia aside, the biggest winner of an OPEC+ rollover is the U.S.. With such price levels, which are now boosted even more after the news of a possible rollover consensus, the U.S. can comfortably increase production, even from costly break-even projects," Tonhaugen added.

Supporting this sentiment, Yemen's Houthi forces said they had fired a missile this week at a Saudi Aramco facility in Jeddah.

Are you glad speculators run the global economy in toto? I hope so, because Grampy Joe has been busy with the EOs while Congress performed its massive act of support for the people, whatever it was called.

Revocation of Certain Presidential Actions
like
Core Principles for Regulating the United States Financial System
which included

(a) empower Americans to make independent financial decisions and informed choices in the marketplace, save for retirement, and build individual wealth;

(b) prevent taxpayer-funded bailouts;

(c) foster economic growth and vibrant financial markets through more rigorous regulatory impact analysis that addresses systemic risk and market failures, such as moral hazard and information asymmetry;

(d) enable American companies to be competitive with foreign firms in domestic and foreign markets;

(e) advance American interests in international financial regulatory negotiations and meetings;

(f) make regulation efficient, effective, and appropriately tailored; and

(g) restore public accountability within Federal financial regulatory agencies and rationalize the Federal financial regulatory framework.

I made bold (b) just for the hell of it, what's not to like? I mean to revoke, not to like. Thus ends my wandering down behind the Executive Order curtain hole.

buy Brent Crude, at 67 or any other price, nor do they pay the $63.83 that US futures rose to, but throwing those numbers out will support the con underlying US gasoline prices, now due for a hike even though they've already crept upward (3.50 to 3.70 for regular in Castro Valley). Covid is easing (or covid restrictions and patience, same thing; ++ vaccines!) and summer is on its way.

Thanks for the link to the eCFR site - cool, though I might lose many hours and days there. I appreciate the dark humor of the revocation of the Core Principles for Regulating the United States Financial System but am certain, even without reading them, that they were not intended to in any way actually achieve or even facilitate their stated purposes except perhaps to enhance the market competitiveness (as opposed to true competitiveness) of some US businesses and industries. That is not to say that their repeal will either. They were intended to establish Trumponomics while Biden, a hard-line neoliberal, wants to return to our Reaganomics roots.

Postman back in the day. His book was a critique of television. His criticism though was not aimed at the "junk" on TV. In fact he was fine with that and said "I raise no objection to television's junk. The best things on television are its junk." Instead, he said the problem with television is that it is most dangerous when..."its aspirations are high, when it presents itself as a carrier of important cultural information."

Postman's book is an argument where he says..."I hope to persuade you that the decline of a print-based epistemology and the accompanying rise of a television-based epistemology has had grave consequences for public life, that we are getting sillier by the minute."

I wonder where twitter falls in in this argument.

His book Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business was published in 1985.

Think I'll pull it off the bookshelf and read it again. Thanks for the reminder el. Have a good one.

Looks like I waited for paperback, mine is the Penguin edition from '86.
I am a "boomer", that is, a member of the first generation to have been raised with TV from childhood. The picture-box, and the aliterate, consumer culture that it promotes, are the ultimate cause of almost all of our problems today. Democracy doesn't work if everybody's stupid.
Is the internet an improvement, or just a further dumbing-down ?
I have a running argument with my son about this.

@Azazello , so yes, a TV influenced brain. How to think outside of the box or the internet. It's a good question.

It seems to me the internet is more pervasive, with tentacles through cell phones etc. At least in my childhood we had large blocks of time where we were nowhere near a television and my parents didn't get one until I was in the 4th grade. Now, I have young relatives who barely go outside and have been online and in front of the tube since before they could talk. It's a weird world.

I have that same Postman copy, there's a little penguin on the front and it looks like I bought it used for $7.50. It has the same headless family watching the tube.

@Azazello I'm an Echo-Boomer (or a Millennial, as many say); I think the Internet peaked in 2005, and has been a cancer ever since. It has gone from augmenting life to replacing it, like plaque replaces dentin. I think the Internet should be rolled back to the early '000s and halted there (in structure, not necessarily content) - but failing that, were I forced to choose between the Internet we have now or no Internet at all, I would choose the latter, no question.

I think I'm better informed now than I was before the internet.
Even though I'm reading fewer books, I get a lot of good links from this site and naked capitalism.
At the societal level it's another story. It seems to me that the internet has made us dumber. See chemtrails, QAnon and etc.
But this could change. Television is the most powerful propaganda device ever invented and it is still immensely influential. However, recent efforts at internet censorship seem to indicate that the oligarchy is afraid of losing control of the narrative
If the internet could break the power of television that would be tremendous.

else. Redwood forests create a substantial portion of their own precipitation via some physics involving their foliage, though they obviously couldn't work said magic in really dry air.

Radiative cooling can drop the temperature of the surfaces involved below the dewpoint and generate precipitation in that manner. That's why sometimes certain surfaces generate dew when nothing else does. There are also old techniques using rock domes.

I have often thought one should be able to make something with a few solar cells to charge a battery which would then, via a timer, fire up a peltier junction attached to a metal mesh (maximize area with minimal wind resistance) at the time in the early morning when the temp and dew point are closest (based on historical average) to harvest some extra water fror free. Have never tried to implement it here, however.

12" - 16" of snow for the neighborhood by the end of the week. Spring snowstorms in Denver! Time to buy more Adult Beverages and some gas for the snowblower: I ain't shoveling that much snow... 60s today and tomorrow, 50s wednesday, and then whammo.

It is therefore also time to do a rare midweek cook so that we have snowy-weather food laid in- two more batches of sourdough, chicken with lemon and kalamata olives, and maybe a monster batch of beef stroganoff for comfort food. And a batch of my wife's latest specialty, potsticker soup, since we have some frozen gyoza to use up...

This will extend the permafrost outside our north-facing front door by a few more weeks- there has been a pile of snow out there from shoveling the front steps since December. We desperately need the moisture. Let it snow. Woohoo!
