The decline and fall of Juan Guaido
As 2019 became 2020, things were not looking good for Juan Guaido and U.S. coup plans.
And then things got dramatically worse for the corrupt opportunist.
Being so incredibly unpopular with the Venezuelan people, Guaido decided to boycott elections that he was sure to lose.
But that leaves him not holding ANY elected position, and even Washington has begun to sound willing to compromise.
The U.S. called on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido to step aside and allow a transitional government to take power and set up new elections, a shift in strategy aimed at breaking a political stalemate in the country.
...“We want Guaido to be free to run for president,” Abrams told reporters. “Under our plan, he is, and according to the polls I’ve seen, he’s very likely to win.”
Yeh, not any poll that I've seen.
By far the biggest new development is with the Coalition For A Coup.
Washington was very proud of how it managed to strong-arm so many nations into recognizing our puppet for president.
"There are about 60 countries that have recognized Guaido and I do expect that all of them -- and we will be in touch with any we haven't been yet -- will continue to recognize him and will not recognize this fraudulent election," Abrams told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee."That corrupt election is not going to change Guaido's status and I don't think you'll find anybody in the opposition leadership who will claim otherwise," he said.
Neocon, war criminal Elliot Abrams may tell you reassuring thing about the coup coalition, but the reality is that the members of the Coalition For A Coup have been quietly slipping out the backdoor for months.
According to an August 14 press statement issued by the US State Department entitled “Joint Declaration of Support for Democratic Change in Venezuela”:
...
For its part, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) issued an identical statement, calling for a “swift and peaceful transition to democracy” in Venezuela...However, the press statement issued by the US State Department and GAC is notable because of the dwindling number of ally countries that are now “committed to the restoration of democracy in Venezuela.” What used to be a long list of more than 50 nations is now down to just 19: Albania, Australia, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Hungary, Israel, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Republic of Korea, Saint Lucia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
This is a far cry from the formerly extensive coalition of dozens of states that have heretofore unequivocally recognized and supported Guaidó. The State Department could not even get sign-on from all of the members of the Lima Group—the multilateral body consisting of 14 countries, including Canada, that is dedicated to a “peaceful exit to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.”
From 60 to 19!
That's just embarrassing.
Hey Trump, maybe talking tough and threatening more sanctions will turn this around. LOL.

and there was Nancy Pelosi, sleeping until Guaido's name...
was mentioned by Trump in the state of union, at which point she woke up to clap hysterically.
So Nancy Pelosi gave President Trump the clap?

Anyone who thinks they can't doesn't understand genetics to begin with.
The question is, what's it going to take?

Sometimes, my sympathy for Magneto's position IS what gives me hope.

Heckuva "coalition" they got there; is it really time for '000s nostalgia already???
Seriously, thank goodness for something resembling good news! I still have a soft spot for that "Good News Roundup" fellow back on DailyKos; poor bastard worked so hard scraping that heartless barrel. I wouldn't mind something like that around here.

It only seems impossible
I relish this site because of those who challenge what may seem impossible.
Those who speak when others cower.
It only takes one individual to start a movement.

I was trying to do a bit of that
with Something Old, Something New. Trying to celebrate the good things about human civilization and the natural world. The latter has been easier for a while.

That poor bastard has gone mad
S/he has written about the 100 ways that Biden is going to help the country and I wonder what he is smoking because none of what he writes touches reality about Biden’s history. The one that got me was about Biden becoming the next FDR. You can catch each new diary on Biden daily there. It reminds me of this:
As someone wrote on Twitter, "pushing Biden to the left" is trickle down theory for liberals. It doesn’t work, but people still insist it will.
There were problems with running a campaign of Joy while committing a genocide? Who could have guessed?
Harris is unburdened of speaking going forward.
The future awaits...
'Most say Biden is president, many say 'nobody' really is.'

Uh...
How about "Kamala says she is president. Biden says, 'Who are all these people with white coats?' Most say nobody is."
On to Biden since 1973

GWB - "... I fully understand, however, that there will be a Russian-style democracy."
PUTIN: "We certainly would not want to have same kind of democracy as they have in Iraq, quite honestly."
By no stretch of the definition of democracy does Abrams proposal for Venezuela come close.
Even 60 countries is a minority in the world
The United Nations recognizes 251 countries and territories. It includes 195 member states and 2 observer states. The United States recognizes 195.
So the number who never recognized Juan Guaido is a clear majority.
